I forgot about the constant worry whether the room they are in is too hot or too cold or there is too much dust and also the extra expense of keeping the boxes in storage. :panic: Wow I love this hobby

I was just talking to my GF last night about this very subject. I have lost that buzz that comes with collecting when you get a new piece in and open it up. I have re-arranged my room about 3 times to see if displaying it differently helps but it doesn't.

The fact that nothing really good has been released for a while and also the prices have gone up so much and the quality has gone down. Maybe its time to find a new hobby, when I think of the things I could have bought with the amount of money I have spent on this hobby.

I feel exactly like you, but I have a very small collection compared to yours, I only collect Rocky, Rambo and a few Batman pieces. The problem is one day you look at the stuff and it's just stuff sitting on a shelf. Kind of gets boring after a while. Then like you said the prices are crazy now. The other problem is when opening up new stuff, the wow factor isn't what it use to be, and if you get the collectors high when opening up a new piece the wow factor is reduced to maybe a a few minutes to a day or two. I guess the longer you're in the hobby the harder it is to get a collector high off a new piece. If you lose the passion it's probably time to down size and start selling off things that don't interest you anymore. Your girlfriend well be very happy with all the extra money coming in for sure lol.

I have already started downsizing as I sold a lot of stuff at my first convention last month. There is another one coming up where I will be selling some more of the stuff I can live without. I have been a lot more focused when it comes to buying and I only buy if it fits in my collection and is a must have but recently there hasn't been much of anything worth worrying about.

Exactly what I was thinking about too. I move a few things around and for now it seems ok. I will keep mines for now. Might sell off a few soon.

No offense but, didn't you just start collecting about 2 months ago and now you're already thinking about selling? :dunno

Maybe another is hobby is in store for you in the near future. :wink1:

Yes that's true. I still like them just might have to sell off some that I'm already losing Intetest in. But as for the new ones like my vampi PF came in today just made me not want to get rid of things just yet. She is i think ss best statue to date. This makes me happy again after seeing all the ok but not great things from ss lately. I will hang in there for now. One thing about this hobby is I like how I can collect a bit of super heroes, movie characters, sic fi, gi joes, Disney, and horror instead of just transforners, he man etc. So

Word of advice. You might wanna slow down with the impulse buying there friend. Lost interest within only 2 months (or less) of owning the piece(s)? That's pretty crazy if you think about it.

Very true. I'm really thinking hard about this. 2 days ago I wanted to sell everything but today I decided to keep going. :gah: I just preorder capt Rex today too. I also order capt hook ex which now I really don't want. But too late to cancel this without the fine from SS. I got the alien ex resurrection too small, catwoman dc museum statue, dooku ventress statue that I think is too small so I don't want those anymore. I'm going to try to control myself more. :slap but thanks for the reality check. :wink1: that's what I like about this forum. It knocks some sense into me when I really need it.

You all want to know the single best thing I've ever heard anyone say regarding this subject? It's a phrase that hit me close to home and one that I've remembered practically every day since...

"I don't need to own it in order to appreciate it."

Think about that for a minute. Just because you like something, just because you admire it's craftsmanship and/or appreciate the artistry of the sculpt, tailoring, whatever...that doesn't mean you have to own it. You can still enjoy it without investing your time, money and space in the physical object.

Let's face it, we're all nerds here. I know, I know, some of you are badass and athletic and wealthy and spend your nights banging super hot girls, we get it...but if you're doing all of that and still hanging around here? You're a huge dork. Deal with it. Frustratingly, there's an odd sentiment in the nerd community that says you have to own something related a certain property in order to be considered a true fan of it. As if the nerd who foolishly stockpiles tons of Hasbro Star Wars crap somehow has more credibility than the one who buys only what he or she truly enjoys and sees real (relative) value in. It's madness. Personally, I don't care if a person owns 1 figure or 1000. They still have eyes, they've seen the same high-resolution photos and ridiculous video reviews we all have; Their opinion is still valid and their fandom is still strong, why do we pretend otherwise?

I'll tell you why, it's to justify our own unnecessary spending. "I know I've spent a lot of money this year, but I'm a REAL collector." Please. It's nonsense. No one cares, no one is going to give you a medal and no matter what you may have read, "he who dies with the most toys" doesn't win a damn thing...he mainly just leaves behind a giant pile of plastic $#!t for his loved ones to deal with.

Nope. I most certainly don't need to own something in order to appreciate it and that little mantra has saved me literally thousands of dollars throughout the years. I can only imagine how much more it will save me as I continue collecting - and make no mistake, I will continue to collect - only what's really "important" to me.

Best post in this thread. Thanks Boot.

I feel my collection needs more focus, 90% of it is Marvel...then I have 4 LOTR pieces, Indians Jones PF bc I loved the movies as a kid. I sold my only 2 star wars PFs as I was never going to be able to backtrack to all of the grails(VADER etc).

Im not too sure about my LOTR pieces...I like em, so I guess I will keep them and possibly grow the collection slowly and get what I like.

The problem with collectors me included is the fact that we are completists...It annoys me that I only have 4 LOTR pieces and Im missing alot of key PF's...it almost in my head makes it not worth while. I think we all need to step back and be thankful for what we have, these are all very highend collectibles and we are lucky we can afford any of them.

I need to take my own advise and not stress about missing pieces in my collection...

Very well said. I always get to obsess with trying to get missing pieces. I must slow down. It's costing me a fortune. :slap

Just make sure you've got all of life's necessities taken care of first and then you can truly enjoy your collection. Educate yourself. Pay your bills. Live and enjoy life. Fall in love. Buy a house. Start a family. Take care of all those things and whatever you have left you can devote to your hobby.

The catch is that you will have much less $$$ left to spend on your hobby. But you will find that you actually enjoy the smaller collection much more with the peace-of-mind that you didn't neglect some other aspect of your life to do it.

Agree with Boot completely, and the only reason I've ever wanted to quit this hobby is seeing the complete stupidity of the others around me.

Like the current "Bat" thread in DC. "I can't afford it, ____ you Hot Toys!" Get over yourselves your greedy little _____s.

It's about the hobby and art, if they can push themselves here then it opens up a ton of other possibilties. I can't afford the Enterbay MIB but the sculpts on them and suit tailoring is incredible. If you can't appreciate something from the same hobby your in simply because it's out of reach, your in the hobby for the wrong reason and won't last.
