As for Odin vs Hela, maybe there is a omnipotence paradox in play. "Could God create a stone so heavy that even He could not lift it?" If he could, then he is not all powerful because he could not lift it. And would not be all powerful if he couldn't create it.

Yup underneath the silly humor there are some paradigms to contemplate over with that being a plausible core one central to the narrative.

I can’t wait to meet my cosmic opposite force lol

Thanks, Riddick. I've never sunk into his comics might have to change that.
I know he's currently unworthy or something right and jane foster is Thor now?
Thor comics are really fun. So many characters, plots and crazy visuals!
BTW, Gaea - the goddes of life on Earth - is Thor's biological mother. :D
Balder Odinson is the actual son of ******. Cool character too (and one of the triggers for Ragnarok).

Hela I knew about. I always loved her in the comics or cartoons.
She was particularly cool in that hulk vs thor cartoon movie.
Yep, she's really cool. Totall dominatrix but in a subtle way.

But in the movie she was pretty much an all powerful version of Amora.
The fact that she had Skurge followin' her didn't help at all. :(

Meh, none of this was implied in any way.
At least in the comics Odin was cursed by his father and his death had huge meaning.
Heck, even tho he tried to break the curse he knew that Ragnarok was unavoidable and planned events accordingly.

In the movie, Ragnarok is just the destruction of Asgard by some fire giant and nothing more.
Everything is random and makes no sense:
1) Odin dies only because Loki banished him (how? wtf?)
2) Why would Hela's return be tied to Odin's life? It's not like he didn't need to Odinsleep every year to restore his power...
3) Where the **** is Odin Force? I refuse to believe that Thor gettin' randon visions of Odin and startin' to throw lightnings is the only explanation of him gettin' one of the most powerful forces in the known realms
4) Why Surtur wanted to destroy Asgard? What he gained from it? Who the **** is he? At least in the comics he wanted to destroy ALL REALMS and ALL GODS
5) etc

Khev I see that you liked it better than GOTG2, nice.

Oh hell yes. Parts of Ragnarok I found to be quite poor like the entire Doctor Strange sequence and some really bad green screen locations but in so many ways it destroyed both GotG and Deadpool at their own games.

I was constantly rolling my eyes whenever GotG 2 would start to do something dramatic and the music started swelling because I just knew it'd be undercut by some stupid joke as if I didn't see it coming a mile away. However in Ragnarok I was laughing out loud at Thor doing such a prolonged "Hey big guy, the sun's getting real low" to the Hulk (complete with touching music) before getting his ass handed to him. The genius in that moment was how it poked fun at AoU while still making sense in the context of Ragnarok itself. And in the process of being contextually appropriate it offered yet another layer of comedy because then we also got to laugh at everyone else in the colliseum who didn't know that Banner could transform and had absolutely no ****ing idea what Thor and Hulk were doing. Lol!

Deadpool would have just stopped mid-battle to face the camera and say "AoU is lame, aren't I funny?"

Ragnarok even stole some of the Snyderverse's thunder (no pun intended) with those gorgeous slow-motion shots (Thor flying away from the dragon, Hela taking down the Valkyries, Thor unleashing lighting on the rainbow bridge.)

So what it did right it *really* did right. It's still a mixed bag for me and I have no idea how it will hold up with another viewing or two but right now I'm glad that Thor (and Thor fans) finally have a movie that is striking a chord with so many people.

Great post.

Oh man the entire stadium was watching on a jumbotron Thor playing finger tickling with Hulk lololol holy crap that’s hilarious all on its own. Grandmaster closeup reaction was funny.

For me it’s rather simple....

A muscular cosmic superhero with a bad ass weapon based off Norse mythology is thematically and visually > than any of those GOTG characters.

**** Deadpool.

:lol

Also "Sir the slaves are--"

"Remember what I said about using the S word!"

"Sorry sir I mean the 'prisoners with jobs' are revolting."

A joke about political correctness and the oh so hilarious topic of slavery all in one. Lol!

I was very happy that his three lame warrior buddies from the other movies were killed so unceremoniously.

I didn't think I'd like the Valkyre chick but the first time she sat in her pilot's chair legs all spread eagle I couldn't help but think "hmm maybe I'll give her a chance," lol.

And after 16 movies with mostly so so villains I was actually pretty impressed that I liked all *three* of Ragnarok's baddies (Hela, Grandmaster, and Surtur.)

And going back to the arena fight that "Hey big guy" moment I think really encapsulates why the film worked so well. As the 17th entry in the MCU there is now a *lot* of backstory that many people have either missed (due to skipping movies here and there) or can no longer remember while on the flipside there's also 16 movies worth of references and inside jokes for the people who do remember them. So when you watch it you're either the real audience (who's seen the MCU) or you're the arena audience (who has no clue why Thor is fingering Hulk) and it's pretty amazing how well they simultaneously catered to both groups by presenting (mostly) everything in funny and entertaining ways even if you don't get or remember all the references.

It's good that my problems with the film are all scattered throughout the middle because I think the fact that it has a great opening and very good/great finale will really help it in the long run.

I gave up on the MCU Odin years ago. He's a weakass old man with no powers, no skills, and no wisdom. He's just some old fart than needs to sleep.

When you see the things he can do in the comics

https://www.reddit.com/r/respectthreads/comments/45qvio/respect_odin_borson_earth616/

the movie version is literally just a guy, not a god. He couldn't even beat some Elves and his wife died in the second film.

I’ve seen it 3 x already :lol

GOTG 2 once.

Yeah it’s not perfect by any sense of the imagination but it was certainly entertaining.

I also wasn’t expecting experiencing any sexual feelings towards Valkyrie because I didn’t find her attractive whatsoever in Creed but then they go and make her a sexy loose slutty drunk warrior who pilots spread eagle in tight lycra leather I was like boing!

You just know she was banging all of those aliens on Sakaar lol.

Then when she put on her shiny tight Valkyrie lycra armor I was done lol

My poor wife her husband wanted to porg both Hela and Valkyrie.

Don’t feel bad for her she wants to porg both Hemsworth AND Valkyrie!

As long she doesn’t want the Grandmaster i’m good lol

This is why they should go against what everyone is expecting which is for the time stone reversal to fix all the problems and instead have Odin be a part in the cosmic battle against Thanos.

Doubt it though lol

Nice post IMO
I'm not getting why folks (including not-this-board) don't like the DS sequence. Loved it - I view these films as interconnected parts of a whole, so enjoyed seeing DS now firmly in place - don't wanna say too much re spoilers + IMO it was d@mn funny:lol. Tho folks are def. entitled to own opinion!

Plus IMO some really well done "serious moments"

Odin's death - and it's clear he still cares for Loki
Valkyries - gorgeous shots too.
Banner coming back - doesn't last long, but awesome Mark Ruffalo. I know the "sun's going down" segues into a funny bit but I thought underneath all that it was kind of mournful, too, at first.
The scene w. Loki talking to Thor

I'm still thinking about the film, so guess I'll be seeing it a third time.:monkey3 Don't mind seein' the SW and BP trailers in 3D either.

This is where I don’t agree.

Just because TDK, Logan or TWS don’t exactly match the comics we should just ignore what those movies have to offer?

Throw away all 17 MCU movies because muh comics were violated!

Sorry Thor and Cap I know that your cinematic visual representations of flight, combat, hammer and shield usage and character growth were thrilling but **** OFF because your story arcs from the comics that span decades were not precisely portrayed in a 2 hour movie therefore your movies are garbage.

Ummm sure ok lol

But in the films Odin says that "we are not gods. We're born, we die".

Only place film Odin really annoyed me was TDW mostly because it seemed plain illogical that he'd want to go to battle after telling Thor in the first movie more or less that battle is a last option.

I really liked Odin in this - Anthony Hopkins. Also when he was "Loki" was so d@mn funny - great actor.

GOTG 2 once.

I definitely think that Ragnarok is the best MCU film that Thor has appeared in. Yes not only better than Thor 1 and 2 but both Avengers flicks.

The cream of the MCU crop for me right now is Cap trilogy, IM1, Ragnarok, Homecoming.

I'm over GotG, haven't really cared for Avengers 1 in a while, and AoU I still like but it's one of those "when I'm in the mood" films.

In general I don't prefer the longform "nothing gets resolved for 10 years" approach to filmmaking but I feel that in many ways Ragnarok is a nice standalone pic and I liked the surprises of

Thor losing his hammer, father, eye, and homeland all at once.

Maybe he even lost a little *too* much but it was nice that they weren't afraid to "go there" at least. In most other films he would have

at least had his hammer and eye restored when he was all powered up with lightning at the end and the fact that neither happened gives Hela's onslaught more weight, even if he ends up getting them back in the next movie.

The reason I didn't care for the Doctor Strange sequence was because IMO they just went way too far with the slapstick. Hemsworth does charming fish out of water comedy *very* well but he is *not* Tim Conway (google him kids, lol) and watching him stumble around, roll down the stairs, etc., over and over every time they teleported just wasn't playing to their strengths at all. I had such a problem with that sequence that it put a bit of a cloud over a good portion of the remaining film until I was finally able to get into the groove again.

What saved the Doctor Strange scene for me were 2 things.

Strange’s confidence that he gained at the end of his movie against Dorm.

And just how incredibly bad ass he looked in his costume and with gloves!

Plus it was very short anyways.

Yes I don't think it will bother me as much on a second viewing now that I know that it's brief and that they don't lean on that type of humor throughout the whole film.

And I definitely understand why comic fans wouldn't like how these characters are portrayed in the movies. God knows I have my hangups about the "correct" way that Star Wars films should be done. However I agree that in Ragnarok Thor finally broke into Russo Bros/BvS Warehouse territory with how badass his fight scenes were, particularly with his hammer at the beginning of the film. Hulk isn't my favorite character but I still like him and thought that his smaller and depowered role was just fine.

Assuming that the humor holds up I'm thinking that the biggest strikes against Ragnarok in the long term will be those piss poor green screen shots (Heimdall and the peasants in front of the fake countryside and palace, ugh) and overall lackluster cinematography throughout (which has been an ongoing issue for pretty much the entire MCU.) The panoramic visual effects shots of the CG cities and group battles were just gorgeous though. *Those* visuals were among the very best of all cbm's IMO.

Plus in a sense he is the true main villain of the Thor films.

Okay so the big devil guy's name was "Surtur?" Why was he a better match for Hela than Thor? Thor totally made him his ***** in the opening scene but then at the end was all "Hey Loki do you know the only thing that can defeat Hela? That p***y from the beginning of the movie!" It's good that this was a comedy because that just made no damn sense, lol.

Because Surtur is basically another god
