Nice post IMO
I'm not getting why folks (including not-this-board) don't like the DS sequence. Loved it - I view these films as interconnected parts of a whole, so enjoyed seeing DS now firmly in place - don't wanna say too much re spoilers + IMO it was d@mn funny:lol. Tho folks are def. entitled to own opinion!

Plus IMO some really well done "serious moments"

Odin's death - and it's clear he still cares for Loki
Valkyries - gorgeous shots too.
Banner coming back - doesn't last long, but awesome Mark Ruffalo. I know the "sun's going down" segues into a funny bit but I thought underneath all that it was kind of mournful, too, at first.
The scene w. Loki talking to Thor

I'm still thinking about the film, so guess I'll be seeing it a third time.:monkey3 Don't mind seein' the SW and BP trailers in 3D either.

I loved it too, it was one of my favorite scenes in the movie. Just because I love DS. It really shows on what level he is, being capable of...

putting Loki in an endless loop, the first Avengers would have been over in minutes with his help

Yes I don't think it will bother me as much on a second viewing now that I know that it's brief and that they don't lean on that type of humor throughout the whole film.

And I definitely understand why comic fans wouldn't like how these characters are portrayed in the movies. God knows I have my hangups about the "correct" way that Star Wars films should be done. However I agree that in Ragnarok Thor finally broke into Russo Bros/BvS Warehouse territory with how badass his fight scenes were, particularly with his hammer at the beginning of the film. Hulk isn't my favorite character but I still like him and thought that his smaller and depowered role was just fine.

Assuming that the humor holds up I'm thinking that the biggest strikes against Ragnarok in the long term will be those piss poor green screen shots (Heimdall and the peasants in front of the fake countryside and palace, ugh) and overall lackluster cinematography throughout (which has been an ongoing issue for pretty much the entire MCU.) The panoramic visual effects shots of the CG cities and group battles were just gorgeous though. *Those* visuals were among the very best of all cbm's IMO.

Yeah some of those green screen earth and asgard countryside vistas were ouch.

I loved the falling junk on Sakaar though pretty kewl.

Yeah the humor that initially worked still held up for me.

Oh and:

"Mjolnir was never the source of your power, you aren't the God of Hammers" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "**** everyone, eat your hero cake, and help me stack these rocks."

lol

Yeah I didn't realize that the flame made him so much stronger at the end.

Oh man thank god Odin’s heavenly advise wasn’t for Thor to create a Thornado to take out Hela.

This is where I don’t agree.

Just because TDK, Logan or TWS don’t exactly match the comics we should just ignore what those movies have to offer?

Throw away all 17 MCU movies because muh comics were violated!

Sorry Thor and Cap I know that your cinematic visual representations of flight, combat, hammer and shield usage and character growth were thrilling but **** OFF because your story arcs from the comics that span decades were not precisely portrayed in a 2 hour movie therefore your movies are garbage.

Ummm sure ok lol

I lost it at "muh comics were violated "[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

It's pretty funny that in one fell swoop Marvel decided to show DC how to have a super alien from another world (that gets destroyed) receive advice from his dead dad who's wandering the countryside in the afterlife and NOT have it suck, lol.

Please stop my sides hurt lol

Odin to Thor: Find your inner strength son do what’s right against impossible odds.

Pa Kent to Superman: Yeah umm you should’ve let all those kids drown on the bus just worry about you and suicide is a perfectly ok option if you ever so choose to just run away from your problems and responsibilities....cough cough I feel a storm coming son.

lololol

And then there's this beauty from Ma Kent:

"You don't have to help anyone, they're all ****. You're ****. This world is ****. Don't do what heroes do, just be a piece of ****."

Sad!

One small scene that I liked that really hasn't been mentioned much here was when Hulk started to turn back to Bruce. Yeah, it was kind of funny when he was punching himself to stay "angry", but there was actual terror in Hulk's voice (and on his face) when he realized that he couldn't stop the transformation. Seeing that we're used to seeing that the other way around (when Banner changes into the Hulk against his will), I thought it was a nice change up.

Leaping and falling a great distance made him turn into the Hulk in Thor 3...but in Avengers 1 that big fall made him turn back into Banner....

I believe they went back to TIH canon of transformations. Like when Ed Norton fell out of the helicopter. His eyes turned green midair which apparently made him indestructible even in human form when he hit the ground. Then after a few moments he became the full Hulk and punched out of the ground. Ragnarok just showed us what that scene from TIH would have looked like if the street didn't budge when he hit it, lol.

Also in The Avengers he told that story about changing when shooting a bullet into his mouth so apparently his invulnerability kicks in pretty much instantly.

the building fell on top of him and then ironman knocked him out while he was still groggy from the fall.. The fall itself didnt make him change back to BB but being knocked out did since he couldnt maintain his rage levels.. The fall in incredible hulk made bruce change much like it did in Ragnorak.. he didnt change until after he hit the ground and was seriously messed up by the fall. It was funny though when bruce got all heroic and said you wanted to know who i am watch this thinking he would change on the way down but instead smashed into the ground and mangled himself. I guess he didn't remember what happened when he did it years earlier in incredible hulk which is still part of MCU continuity.. maybe the director didnt get the memo but bruce should have remembered that.. slight continuity error i guess.

I just realized that was in Age of Ultron not in the first avengers movie.. i guess your referring to when he was knocked off the fighter plane after hulking out on the quinjet and quickly changed to bruce banner when he hit the ground. It has to be like kev said, something that kicks in when his life is threatened or BB is in mortal danger.. when he is simply knocked unconscious, he just transforms back into BB

In TIH his eyes don’t change, he closes them expecting the rush will elevate his heart enough to set in the transformation, and when it doesn’t, he goes “Oh sh...” and gets cut off.

His invulnerability is driven by the same things that make Cap pretty durable, it’s his emotions and heart rate that trigger transformation. Even as Banner he heals or is invulnerable, but if some circumstance that could hurt him triggers a rise within, then he’ll also transform, like the suicide, all the emotion driving him to it and the build up to trying would be enough to cause a Hulk out. I’m pretty sure in MCU, if Bruce were snuck up on and shot in the head he’d just get knocked out for a bit and wake up healed like Wolverines.

Even though I totally saw it coming I loved watching Bruce splat onto the rainbow bridge, lol. It would have been nice if Valkyrie got a reaction shot though when he grabbed the wolf since they had been building up to her being surprised at who he really was for quite a few scenes beforehand.

I also laughed out loud at Thor happily watching Surtur destroy Asgard until Hulk's stupid little body flew through the air at Surtur's face, lol.

Yeah that was funny.

I loved Surtur sitting all bored and depressed at the start of the movie with his hand on his chin lol

They did cut to a reaction shot of her right after Hulk roared at the wolf.

Glad you mentioned the hammer use - one of my favorite things was the spinning/light. So far I didn't have a problem w. the Asgard sanctuary gates or the visuals - not until the end credits anyway. (I also love the Russo's grittiness and DS has just plain trippy sequences re watching it again the other night).

And I think Thor's lightning was really well done; and I really liked Heimdall. Well, *shrug* for me I've got more things I am happy about than unhappy - way more - but I can also understand why Thor and comic fans would be unhappy. I am glad I cheated and read spoilers tho; w. the expectations I had had in my head re some sort of real IW build-up and some sort of "grim cataclysm" happening - well, guess there's some of that, but nobody seems particularly upset.:monkey3
