Broke and happy
In a somewhat surprising turn, Disney’s Thor: The Dark World earned $86.11 million over its first weekend. I say surprising because of how comparatively not front loaded it turned out to be. Thor: The Dark World earned 8% of its weekend figure from Thursday grosses, which is far less than Iron Man 3 ($15.6m/$174m) and identical to The Avengers, which scored both of which scored 9% of its weekend figure via Thursday midnight grosses ($18.75m/$207m). It also set an opening weekend record of sorts for Marvel, pulling in the least front-loaded Friday-Sunday debut weekend of any of their films, for a franchise-high 2.7x weekend multiplier.
Every single Marvel Studios movie has pulled just over/under 2.5x for the weekend, with the vast majority hitting right around 2.5x. So the fact that Thor: The Dark World pulled off a 2.73x weekend multiplier is noteworthy as its the largest weekend multiplier out of eight Marvel films, besting Iron Man‘s 2.6x multiplier ($38m/$102m). Despite being easily the most fantastical and sci-fi of the Marvel films thus far, it played like a mainstream action picture. Now one can chalk this stronger-than-expected performance due to the to the non-summer release date, Monday being Veteran’s Day (IE – Sunday now acts like a second Saturday for much of the country), as well as the fact that Thor is arguably the most kid-friendly of the ongoing franchises.
