Action heroes these days aren't huge, save for the Evans and Hemsworths of the world, but there is an expectation that most will need to go through a rigorous training routine in the months prior to shooting so Men's Health can push articles about their process to mainstream consumers. Look at the noise surrounding Chris Pratt's and Paul Rudd's transformations. I don't know if such things accompanied movies like Commando or Cobra. That's probably because Arnie and Sly were always seen as monsters, whereas today's guys are seen as schlubs who turned it around ("if they can do it, so can you"). Their stories feel more accessible, more marketable to a general audience.
