Personally, I think Animatronics are the best types of special effects. JP T-Rex or Bruce in Jaws, etc. But that doesn't really apply here.

I personally am looking forward to this and will be comparing it to the original Phillip K. D story, not the Arnold film. While the Arnold film is great, its very much an 'Arnold film' IMO.

Sure. CGI is technically better then Stop Motion.

But, Stop Motion is pretty insane to do, and on top of that, requires careful planning.

CGIing something is so easy. Stop Motion-ing something is challenging.

Point is, it's different. But sometimes old stop motion looks better then new CGI. Sometimes. CGI is a better tool. But it's over used too much lately

How is doing CGI easy?

A lot of poor directors will just CGI it in because they were too lazy to do anything else.

The actual CGIing, is not easy. But it's a lot easier to do, then stop motion.

In the sense that if I need a big monster, I could say "CGI it" and in a few weeks or months, i'll be done.

Where's stop motion requires more planning.

And so does CGI....____ it.

Point is, in the hands of a great director, any visual effect can work. :lol

That is not how it works at all--no director just says "put in in with the computer"

If they did, they could just as easily say "just use some stop motion"

And there's no hands of a great director that can fix the innate problems with stop motion that CG overcomes.

I am rather enjoying this back and forth.

It's hardly anything, in these days there's no aspect of stop motion that is better than CG. Now miniatures in general still have certain advantages, which is why for instance just one of the Star Wars prequels had more miniature work than the entire OT. It's just that stop motion is completely outdated.

Stop motion still has it's place, but in select genres. I think Corpse Bride looked fantastic with stop motion. As did Fantastic Mr. Fox.

I still think the best use of these technologies is to use them where it makes sense, and to use a combination of them.

Well, as for full animation's that's a stylistic approach. These days it's more expensive to do the stop-motion animations than CG, which is a reason why they've avoided it (and the issues Aardman was having).

But they won't ever use stop motion like they did in Star Wars or the old sci-fi movies.

I agree about the animatronics. I wish more hollywood movies would actually use production skills and do some high end animatronics like we used to see and not the cheapo CGI than rarely looks bettter IMO.

Blade Runner cop car taking off, Jurassic Park, are good examples of how good animatronics can be when done correctly. They just look awesome.

I think another thing is that while CGI is amazing because you can do anything with it now, I feel like the "magic" of movies is disappearing. I mean, we wouldn't have Transformers without CGI (although I only liked the 1st one), but for everything now, I find myself saying "it's just CGI" Back before CGI I was always wondering how in the heck did they do that!

I don't think vehicles count as animatronics.

I do appreciate the fully built stuff like the cars though. I'm actually surprised they built 3 of the cars for this movie.

Hellboy 2 and Pans labyrinth had amazing practical effects. it was a beautiful mix between practical suits and CGI,
I think a mx of both is really ideal,
Independence Day was another movie that looked really nice before, I know CGI is the future but some things look godawful in CGI. like, really really bad,

on the other hand, the CGI on the new Thing movie and the wolfman remake was awful,
