I would not buy one myself, because I'm more than happy with my Sideshow one, but I have to say the presentation of this figure is wonderful. When you watch this review you can see the care and attention Toys Mcoy put in to the figure.

The only downsides that I see, is he's a bit spark plugish and his hair looks a bit like a cow's licked it.
He still looks great though

I think Toys McCoy is still the best Indy out there. For some reason, I don't like the SSC Indy. He just seems... sloppy. Medicom's looks okay, but it desperately needs a new paint job and body to make it better. I'll stick with my Toys McCoy!

I have both figures, so it's not an issue of having to chose which one to get. As for preference, I still like my Toys McCoy Indy better. I do think that there are some improvements in the SS Indy, such as a jacket thickness that's in scale, along with its other accessories. however, the sum is lesser than its parts. Unlike TM, the SS version lacks soul, IMO, as if this is not supposed to be a figure of Indy, but of a robot double of Indy. Though I prefer molded accessories when textiles fail to approximate 1:1 items in 1:6, I think SS could improve on the finishing, which make the satchel, whip, etc. look fake. Then there's the body comparison; though TM uses the CC Joe body, for some reason the way the clothing is filled out by the Joe body looks more realistic than the SS Indy, albeit the scale thickness of the fabrics is an improvement as mentioned. Lastly, there's just something about the floppiness of the articulation that ruins the play and pose factor.

Don't get me wrong, I intend to do the works on my SS Indy to bring it to life, so in the final equation, for me, the primary purpose of SS Indy is to be a stock basis for customs, kind of like a deluxe Indy version of Art S. Buck.

To be fair on the issue of era-specific production quality, Toys McCoy in its heyday would be comparible to Enterbay or the higher end HT figures that touch on the $200 plus price tag, so if done today a TM Indy could possible have moving eyes, opening jaws and seamless articulation that would leave no question which is the superior version.

Taking his original price and inflation into account, would you be willing to pay near $600 for him today?

What is the basis of your $600 estimate? That amount today would be around $450 in 1999, which is far from the amount that I paid for.

Brand new, I paid around $230, which would approximate around $300 today (the horse that was limited at 1,000 units was going for $100 from the same seller, "New York Toys, Toys, Toys," which went on to set up its own line, "In The Past Toys").

Then there are other factors to consider. If you were to interpolate the level of quality available currently, a Toys McCoy Indy would be comparable to a DX Hot Toys or Enterbay figure. In addition, were there alternative production figures of Indy from other companies? At that time, there were no alternative Indy figures, unless you count the Kenner one, which I also had, or customs, but even if there were any comparable alternatives, I would still need to get the superior figure.

Lastly, the TM Indy was limited to 3,000 pieces world wide, with most of that being distributed in Japan; the effect on price is simple supply and demand...so the answer to your question is yes, in a heartbeat I'd shell out the 2009 equivalent of what I paid for my Toys McCoy Indy, even up to your incorrect estimate of $600.

From what I can tell the TM Indy doesn't lend itself to much improvements which the SS Indy does. That in itself is an advantage for the SS Indy and it really doesn't take much to make the SS Indy amazing, as we've all see on these boards.

Hmmm, the Toys McCoy does look pretty cool even after all this time, and it looks really nice in that video review that Dinolast just posted.

SS will eventually release another Indy, right? The next outing would beat the TM version completely, then.

That would be the KOTCS Indy that they've already announced...:(
