I find it sympathetic of him that he can laugh with his own reputation of making brainless movies :)

Bay Pushing the Limits of VFX for Transformers 2
Source:Variety April 1, 2009

Variety has published a new article talking about how director Michael Bay is demanding things to be "awesome" for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Here's a clip:

"Michael took the production value up many, many notches," he says. "Just the backgrounds alone are huge. It's a combination of 'Apocalypse Now' and 'Ben-Hur,' in regards to fantastic backgrounds and the unbelievable sets we worked at around the world."

Everyone involved in "Revenge of the Fallen" is keeping the details under wraps, but Farrar says there are some 60 robot characters, and they play in settings around the world. Some, like refineries at night, were chosen to boost the visual drama and show off the scale of the giant 'bots.

What's more, this time the Transformers will interact much more with the world around them. Farrar highlights "the splashes and the hits and the fighting on dirt or moving, banging into trees," explaining, "Things splinter and break, they spit, they outgas, they sweat, they snort."

60 robots??? That just seems crazy. Less is better, actually develop some of them as characters instead of just flash.

In a Michael Bay movie?? :lol

I know it's not Oscar material, but hell, with what a dozen, all you got was too much Bumblebee really in the first one, if they really have 60 in the new one you'll either hardly see any one of them for too long, or you'll see a few and the others will feel like a waste.

After months of speculation about which giant transforming robots may or may not appear in Michael Bay’s upcoming mega-sequel, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, Paramount Pictures has been kind enough to release a full list of the participating Autobots and Decepticons – and there’s a couple of surprises on there…

The Autobots are: gravelly leader Optimus Prime (like, duh!), weapons specialist Ironhide, medic Ratchet and Sam Witwicky’s bestest friend, Bumblebee, now a 2010 Chevy Camaro.

That quartet, of course, return from the first movie, but now they’re joined by reinforcements including turncoat Decepticon, and doddery old duffer, Jetfire; female Autobot Arcee (briefly glimpsed in the teaser trailer that launched a couple of months ago); Jolt, and Skids & Mudflap, two Autobots known as The Twins.

So, nine Autobots in total. Not bad, but they’ll need all the strength they can muster in the face of the overwhelming Decepticon onslaught. They are:

Returning characters Starscream (formerly second-in-command, now head honcho) and Scorponok; and new characters, Sideways, Ravage (the panther-like beastie glimpsed in the teaser trailer), Soundwave (now a satellite orbiting Earth), The Doctor, a tiny bastard that will torment Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky, Wheelie, Demolishor (the giant wheeled villain that we saw fighting Optimus in the teaser), and the seven Constructicons that will form the massive Devastator. They are: Scavenger, Scrapper, Hightower (wasn’t he in the Police Academy movies?), Longhaul, Rampage, Overload and, erm, Mixmaster. Jazzy Jeff wasn’t available, apparently.

Then, last but not least, there’s The Fallen – the catalyst for the movie’s plot, the Lucifer of the Transformersverse. But we knew he’d be in it – he’s the title character, for God’s sake.

But the plot thickens: Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons, is not on the list. Given that he was last seen getting killed and dumped into the ocean, that shouldn’t be a surprise. But all along, the suspicion has been that Megatron will appear in the movie, and that his exclusion from the list is misdirection on Bay’s part. After all, Hugo Weaving has confirmed that he has recorded dialogue as the voice of Megatron, so… watch this space.

Also, ILM effects guru, Scott Farrar, hinted recently that there may be as many as 60 robots in the finished movie, which is way more than Paramount have revealed thus far..

Come back soon for our Transformers character breakdown, with exclusive quotes from Bay himself.

DVD will be out probably late October, they'll push it to be out in time to get kids yacking their parents' ears off about toys for Christmas.

I certainly hope that this means that Starscream will then have more screen time...
