That being said, my money will not be going toward the purchase of un-needed items, thus will not be falsely 'inflating' the economy - I'm donating to a bunch of friends who are participating in an upcoming Susan G. Komen race for breast cancer research :duff

That's very awesome of you, Dusty! :rock

Is this one of those 3-Day events, or an actual 5K race? My ex does the 3-Day thing every year here in Atlanta. It's a very powerful event.

Anyone else that was supposed to get the Rebate Check last week still waiting?

:monkey4

The one this past weekend was actually a Revlon 5K: https://www.revlonrunwalk.com/

Then there are a few other Koman 5K's coming up. I have always wanted to do one of those 3-Day events. I'll need to find out when the next one is!

My mother has gone through 2 rounds with breast cancer over the course of 12 years, and has come out on top both times, just barely. We desperately need alternatives to chemo and radiation.

I really hope that your mom can live a long life. I couldn't imagine my life without my mom. I love my mommy.

Anyway, I lost my aunt to cancer. The radiation treatments are bad sometimes. They can either improve or worsen a situation. In her case the radiation did nothing but give a much worse outcome. She went from looking like a beautiful woman to nothing that resembled that woman in 2005. We lost her during the 2006 holidays. I miss her, and I really do hope that my cousin thrives from her passing. He works in television and seems to be doing well in Toronto. He even has his name in the credits of some cartoons. He even worked for New Line Cinema 5 years ago in Los Angeles.

I wish to follow my dreams like he has done. He works in the distribution end. I want to do the animation end or film editing which is what I am doing in school. Anyway, he's amazing so I am sure he'll do very well.

*hugs Dusty* I know it's lame, but if it was my mom I would be happy to know there were others out there that cared.

P.S. My mother and my step father constantly run half marathons, which are 13.5 miles. I don't know how the old farts do it. Maybe I'll do one more body building show, and train for long distance running to run a marathon. That is another dream of mine. To do one, and dare I say, a full one. Although, is 27 miles realistic? :google

I agree. We lost my then Mother-In-Law (who I was very close to) in 2001 to Breast Cancer. She was only 46 and fought it valiantly for 16 years before losing the fight. :( My ex is only 34 and has to get checked every 6 months (she also lost both of her grandmothers to it). I'm worried for her as well as our two daughters. What an insidious disease.

Best wishes to your Mother.

Yeah, the government needs to spend more time trying to find a cure to cancer. Will they? Only if its in THEIR best interest. Which sucks because many a good person is affected or lost to it.

They've already found the cure. But they aren't going be passing any cure out without you coughing up some serious cash, and they aint going to be doing it any time soon.

FYI,Cancer is what keeps the population growth in check.

Well, it's certainly a pretty insensitive thing to say with people in this thread talking about having lost their loved ones to cancer.

Ok, so we can accomplish and conquer all these amazing feats but we can't conquer cancer??

And I wasn't talking trash to the victims of cancer. That's just another attempt to put words in my mouth.

But living way above our means is the American way!! ;) Plus it makes SOMEBODY wealthy (mortgage, credit card, and insurance companies to name a few)... so isn't that supposed to HELP our economy, if the idea behind tax breaks for the wealthy is correct? All I see is the wealthier become even more wealthy (or losing their wealth altogether since they've been encouraged to live beyond their means and were stupid with their money) and the poor becoming poorer.

Our government could DEFINITELY have more input into the ability to create alternate forms of energy. If you don't think that being in the pocket of oil companies keeps them - at least partly - from doing that to the extent that they could, well, I don't know what to say. Instead of giving millions in tax breaks to incredibly wealthy people, they could be putting that money to good use by funding MORE AND BETTER experimentation and state incentives to switch to alternative forms of energy. (oh, and they could have stayed out of the war too - that probably would have helped on the money end)

I think of this as the next 'space race'. The government put incredible amounts of resources into the space race, and landed on the moon first and all that, as a matter of national pride. Could they not put as much national pride into the 'energy race'? I have complete confidence that our scientists and government agencies could come up with a stable and abundant form of alternative energy within, say, 5-10 years, IF they had the proper resources at their disposal and it was truly made a priority. My sister's a research scientist with a Masters and PhD, and the sad fact of the matter is that, over the past 8-10 years, government funding has almost completely gone out the window for the sciences. It's all almost entirely private, and sorry, but that's just not gonna cut it. In fact, she's going to Switzerland to do research for a year for THEIR government because of it. We are losing our best and brightest minds because of our Dark Age ideas of ruling by fear and 'whoever has the biggest guns wins'. Terrorists don't care if you have big guns and come in fighting... they are weasly b@$t@rds who will find a way to terrorize no matter how big your military may be. The only way to come out ahead in the 21st century and beyond is through education and intelligence - not brute force... much in the way we won our independence originally. Oh, and stop getting sidetracked by gay marriage and whether or not to legalize marijuana! Just let them be married and smoke pot, already, and you've saved yourself a bunch of cash and time right there!

All in my humble opinion of course :) Don't want to start some sort of flame war here!

Can you tell I'm a bit disillusioned with our government the way it stands right now? :lol

And, to tie it all back on topic, this 'rebate' is nothing but a political stunt to try to pull the wool over our eyes and make it seem like something awesome... just like the proposed - and preposterous - 'gas tax holiday'. If that actually happens, I really am gonna make good on my word to move to Canada :lol <----not really kidding

I would gladly forego my tax rebate if they promised to put it into government funded scientific research... I wish they would give us the option. I budgeted correctly throughout the year and do not NEED this money. I hesitate to give to privately funded companies because of all the horror stories of what's REALLY going on with your money. Obviously the government isn't much better, but at least I feel like I at least have *some* say in it, since this country is supposedly a democracy.

That being said, my money will not be going toward the purchase of un-needed items, thus will not be falsely 'inflating' the economy - I'm donating to a bunch of friends who are participating in an upcoming Susan G. Komen race for breast cancer research :duff

Well Dusty, there is nothing I can say because I think there is a fundamental difference in our opinions on what the government should or shouldn't do. I believe in capitalism, and not government funded projects. The government should be a lot smaller than what it is but what we get is so much pork-bellying that spending just gets out of control, and this is all controlled by special interests groups. So yes, the government could do more but shouldn't in my opinion. My girlfriend was a lobbyist for 8 years in Washington, and the stories she tells me is just mind blowing. This goes for both sides of political spectrum. Regardless of how you feel, this will not change even if Obama is elected into office. The billions that are spent on energy research and benefits are more than enough in my opinion. There is a lot of research in that department around the entire world. If money can be made, progress will come about.

Back to the more important topic, yes cancer research is very important to me as well. While in school, I was involved in a research grant studying the effects of green tea polyphenols on cancer cells (namely ECGC.) I spent a lot of time and energy on that and even presented my research. I found it very rewarding and I hope that a cure is found in the future. Personally, I think our best bet is in stem cell research. No matter, which candidate we get, the stem cell band will go away. So if anything positive can be said about any of this is that we may be looking towards a brighter future in that regard. I salute you in your support of cancer research. It's a cause that I support as well every year.
