StrikeForce had a higher rating then the UFC, it did really good.
Yeah. There's some confusion about this so let me explain it a little so everyone understands. Long read..
The Strikeforce card did get a higher rating: 2.19/2.91 (Main Event Peak) vs. 1.5 (UFC 100 Replay).
But the UFC 100 Replay had more viewers overall: 2 Million vs. 576,000/856,000 (Strikeforce Main Event Peak). The UFC 100 Replay was also the highest rated program in the male 18-34 demographic in it's timeslot with a 1.8 rating. And within that demographic the UFC 100 Replay got more viewers (513,000) than Strikeforce (181,000).
SpikeTV has a bigger viewing audience: 98 Million to Showtime's 15 Million. But what people don't get is, having that smaller viewing audience is the reason WHY Strikeforce got a higher rating.
The UFC 100 Replay snatched 2 million viewers out of a possible 98 Million. Strikeforce got 576,000/856,000 (Main Event Peak) out of a possible 15 Million.
But that's not accurate because it's not like ALL 98 Million SpikeTV viewers are into MMA and 96 Million just decided not to watch the UFC 100 Replay. And it's not like ALL 15 Million Showtime viewers are into MMA and 14 Million+ just decided not to watch Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg. But that's the assumption made with the ratings. It takes into account the overall amount of available viewers and how many viewers a program actually gets and there goes your rating. But it doesn't factor in how many of the total amount of available viewers are actually fans. The UFC 91 Replay got the highest rating to date for a UFC event on SpikeTV: 2.3 Million/3.3 Million (Main Event Peak). So if if you use that number, the UFC 100 Replay got 2 Million viewers out of 3.3 Million. And since the Strikeforce card was the highest rated MMA event ever on Showtime, that means Strikeforce got the most possible viewers it could with 576,000/856,000 (Main Event Peak).
I think both shows did great but especially the UFC because again, it was a
replay. Not a live event like Strikeforce. Showtime/Strikeforce and SpikeTV/UFC should all be happy with the results. They all can claim victory in certain areas: Higher rating vs. More overall viewers/more male 18-34 viewers.
I watched both and enjoyed both, personally. I'm on the Westcoast but my cable package includes eastcoast channels (HBO-E, Showtime-E, etc.) So I was able to watch the Strikeforce show live at 7:00pm EST instead of having to wait until 10:00pm PST. The SpikeTV/UFC 100 Replay came on at 10:00pm PST. So I avoided the counter-programming and got to see both.
