Josh, I though you were retired?

I myself won't cancel. But if I had to cancel something, the helmet would be the reason.

Okay, here's my breakdown...

First off, upon close study of the hi-res I noticed even a couple more thing, but those would really be ticky-tack... especially at this scale... so I left well enough alone. :lol

I think it's important to note (and this is key)... that none of these issues were present in the Kotobukiya, Gentle Giant, or Medicom Clone helmets in this scale. Indeed, even the Hasbro 3.75" helmet were sculpted more accurately. So Sideshow definitely can and should do better here.

With that, here you go....

First, a pic of the Master Replicas helmet (produced directly from the original ILM elements):

Now, the Sideshow prototype with the incorrect areas noted:
ssc_clone_wrong_numbered.jpg

1. The bottom portion of the visor is far too thin. The black is not painted all the way down to the top of the frown, and it should be (they should be connected, actually). Even if it were painted in, however, it's too thin throwing off the look and shape of the visor itself.

2. The frown is too rigid (it should be more curved... see pic at top) and also too small. The gray/black paint scheme of the vents are also incorrect. Again, this is something all the other licensees got right.

3. The aerators are just wrong, wrong, wrong. Not only the wrong color, but the wrong shape and size. Also (and even more notable) the entire shape of the underside of the helmet is off. The aerators should sit against a flat backing within their "loops" (shaped almost like a sideways "p" or "q"). Here, they're just stuck inside portions of the helmet that jut out. This will especially affect the look of the helmet in profile, as well. Again, the aerators are off... but so is that whole underneath area (also something all the other licensees got right).

4. Mic area is the wrong size/shape. And the mic itself is inaccurate.

5. Chin area is "pinched" to a near beak-like look. It should be smooth and gradually fade toward each side (again, compare the reference pic and pretty much another other EP3 clone helmet out there).

6. Not a deal-breaker, but the top fin sits a bit too low and doesn't have the gradient flow into the top of the helmet like it should. It almost appears as if it were sculpted separately and then stuck on.

And here they are to compare, side-by-side (with Sideshow's without my color boxes and numbers):

Again, one of the biggest qualms is not that Sideshow's is incorrect... it's that they didn't even nail it as much as Hasbro did on their little crappy 3.75 figures! And certainly not anywhere near as accurately as Master Replicas, Kotobukiya, Gentle Giant, Medicom, you name it.

Cool? :duff

For someone who seems to take pride in being on top of the criticisms...you missed what, to me, is the most obvious one.:D

It would be awesome if someone from Sideshow could tell us more about the situation and what is going to come of it. Sideshow might not face so much criticism if they were a little more communicative with its customer base.

We still do not know the whole story. I simply have a hard time believing that any artist would make so many mistakes and not notice them right off the bat. This isn't like a facial sculpt where defining features are difficult to nail down and can be ambiguous depending on reference material and their interpretation.

Helmets have basic, yet specific, geometries in their proportions. I have very little experience with clone helmets. I saw them in the prequels at the movie theaters and that was about it. But I noticed that something was amiss with the sculpt when it was first presented on these forums.
When I first saw the preview pic of the figure, the beak and the round respirators were very apparent to me. It's not that I memorized the clone helmet in one viewing at the theater, but the geometric shapes are significant enough that when there were major changes to them, I noticed that something is wrong.

It's just like when you meet someone for the first time. Your brain unconsciously stores their unique face features to memory and helps you recognize the individual the next time you meet that person. No two humans are alike. Even genetic twins have some visual dissimilarities due to environmental influences. Your memories of facial features are quite strong. How many times have you forgotten someone's name and yet no matter how long it has been, you know you have seen them before?

That is why I still wonder if this was production issue and somehow the molds or casts became severely distorted.

Whichever the case, I think it is important to point these problems out. The outcome of this figure could set a precedent for the acceptable level of accuracy for all figures released in the future. Considering this is our only chance to see 1/6 SW memorabilia, I would assume you guys want to see it done right.

A little more communicative? Really? Name me a company that talks to its fans more than Sideshow. If you're expecting them to tell you every detail thats going on that will never happen. It doesn't with any company period.

I agree. They have been pointed out though. At this point though its the same people posting the same issues every day. I highly doubt this sets any kind of a precedent though. Nobody is saying anything about not wanting it done right. Thats a lack of understanding the point being made Justin.

For a company as small as Bowen Designs, i think they are a fair contender.

I think there is always a chance for precedent to be set when an item goes sold or unsold.
LOTR items went unsold and what happened? The whole line was cancelled.

Obviously, I don't think SSC would cancel all SW if the Utapau Clone didn't sell but they'd certainly try to interpret the reason and see if they'd A) fix it for the next one or B) never release another clone.

On the other hand, if all the ^^^^^ing and complaining happens but the Utapau STILL sells, what incentive do they have to resculpt the next ROTS clone?

I personally think that aside from ROTS clone commanders which probably must have resculpts anyway that there is a 90% chance that SSC will reuse the same sculpt no matter what.

They went with the same horrendous open left hand for so long and that thing would have been so easy and cheap to resculpt and it would have impacted 100,000s of figures. If they never had the interest in redoing that, why in the world would they pay so much more on sculpting and molds to redo a big helmet that will only be used for a few figures?

:love :grouphug :family :mexwave :woo

This thread makes me feel all warm and gooey inside.

Should I see a doctor?

Re: Utapau 12" The nicey nice thread

This whole thing reminds me of the talk I had with a few people in the SSC art dept. They were asking me about the original Stormtrooper and if people would find any fault with what they did.

I told them that anal collectors will find fault with anything. If Angelina Jolie was topless in front of them, they would probably say that her nipples were too dark or that the tits weren't level. :banghead

This whole debacle proves me right. :lol

I am 44 years old and I just learned how to spell "*********" on Sideshowcollectos.com.

There has to be some irony in that, somewhere.
