Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

This is going to sound like a big contradiction, I love the Graphic novel, in fact I'm re-reading it right now, but (and here's the contradiction) I still feel its overrated. My favourite Moore work is still V for Vendetta, but having lived through the hell that was Thatcher in the UK of the 80's, his vision of the future she was creating just gets more relevant with each passing year. I'm sure it must have played a big influence on PD James, Children of Men (made into another fantastic film).

Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

I havent read V, but I think I might try it out too.

Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't think it's as focused as Watchmen.

I would completely agree with you, Watchmen is a far more cohesive piece of work, very polished and full of interesting ideas, the sort of ideas that had played on the minds of comic book fans for years (what kind of person would YOU turn into given superhuman powers, could you resist the lure of personal gain or gratification), you also found your personal politics making you judge everbody from the offset.
V was a not only artistically disjointed, but due to it's 'historical' background it was physically disjointed as well. But what Moore was saying hit home with me more, perhaps it was the fact there were no 'super heroes' in it, but it's resonance was deeper for me. It's purely personal, I have friends who tell me I'm wrong all the time, and as I say, don't get me wrong I still feel Watchmen is a very important step in the evolution of comic books, I love it. But I still feel it's become a victim of its own success.

Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

I definitely can't say you're wrong! Art hits everybody differently and the last thing I would ever want to do is tell you you're wrong for having a personal reaction to a literary work, lol.

It's interesting to see how Alan Moore's work retains its relevancy over time.

Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

Comedian looks great, but Ozy and NiteOwl look way, way, way too young. I really wished they'd have cast older for this, they're supposed to be in their 40s for crissakes.

That's what I was thinking Dave. While I was reading the book the trailer kept running through my mind and I was like, "Who are the two young guys supposed to play?" After finishing the book, it occurred to me that THEY were Ozymandias and new Niteowl!:horror

Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

The biggest stretch is Matthew Goode, a 30 year old playing a 46 year old.

But Dan Dreiberg should be older and chubbier.

Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

He What!?!?!?! SPOILERS!!! COME ON!!!!

(just wanted to beat someone to the punch. :D)

Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

Well they can either read the book, or GTFO. People should read it first before seeing. Everyone should. :whip

Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

Just re-read the graphic novel for the first time in almost 20 years--- still holds up and seems even more powerful today after 9/11, the current oil situation, war on terror...etc... This could be THE breakout movie of 2009 if it's pulled off correctly. I've really enjoyed the trailer (before the Dark Knight it really was fantastic--although the majority of the theatre had no idea what the source material was) my concern--- and I'll have to reread THIS entire thread to see if it's been discussed already but the source material is so dense I'm worried about the parts that they had to leave off-- Oh well, we'll know soon enough...

Re: WATCHMEN Movie Discussion (SPOILERS)

I just read the novel for the first time. It was great. Still a bit too hyped up, but still great nonetheless.

Put me the the group disapointed that Rorschach died. I think letting him live wouldn't have mattered. Who would have believed him anyway? Everyone felt he was crazy to begin with.

What I liked is that the heroes didn't come through in the end like they usually do. They failed. But ironically, their failure ended up being a good thing in the long run. Very interesting concept.

Oh, I also felt bad when the mutant Lynx died :lol I've got a soft spot for animals.
