Why would I sell it? I didn't it buy to sell it.
I think if there is any groups in here it's these two:
1. Those that buy because they really wanted the sculpt/are fans of the character
2. Those that buy to flip.

And flippers suck because they make it harder for true fans to get the pieces they really waited for years to be made. And I'm not talking about people who sell high on Ebay, good for them, i'm talking about people who will butt in and grab an exclusive at retail just because they know it will be in demand. Just think about it for a second. The only one in this equation that is happy with the hype and high prices are flippers in possession of the piece. The true fans of the piece that also have it are really not bothered about higher values. They are happy with the piece whatever the market value. The other true fans that dont have the piece also dont want the hype because it means they wont be able to afford it. Again, the only one benefiting from hype and high prices are flippers. And they usually masquerade as "proud owners of a grail". Whereas the true fans are simply proud owners of something they love. I hate the snobbish attitude in these forums.

*yawn*

We never know what pieces are going to take off in value. I'll use the SIM for an example. I bought it because I thought it would make a cool compliment to my regular IM. With an ES of 1250 and another (better) IM already out there, I never thought it'd double in value right off the bat. It was worth $300 to me, but not $600. I got an offer and I accepted it. When I ordered it I certainly didn't have any plans on selling it but it was worth more to someone else than it was to me. I don't see anything wrong with that. Of course I also buy to flip so I don't know if I'm the best judge of character :D

I would agree with Spartan for the most part (except about the this being a snobby forum, I don't think I've posted at more common and degrading forum in my life).

However after a piece has been out for awhile there's a lot of the free market economy coming into play. A flipper only benefits from the initial heat on a collectible, they've usually sold it by the time it's released.

After a few months or years the collectible will find it's true value. And that "true value" isn't what you or I think it's worth, but is the price that it can achieve because multiple people still want to obtain it.

lol
just because I wouldn't pay $1300 for it doesn't mean I dont love the piece.
and as for flippers, again, I am not talking about Ebay auctions. If a fan for some reason has to sell a piece and there are 100 others who want it, of course the price will go high, there is nothing wrong with that. The ones that suck, are those that buy the exclusives in full knowledge that they will sell it in the future for a lot more. I understand we live in capitalism and making money is everyone's right...but that still doesn't stop them from being suckers.

You forget the fact that many of these flippers are themselves collectors and one of the way they can buy some great collectibles of their own, is to flip some others. We've all done it at some point. You also talk about the ''real fans'' missing the item they want..Well as a collector, I seldom miss the rare item I really want when they are sold at retail..I keep myself inform on forum like these to know exactly when the item I want will be put up for sale. You snooze, you loose.

i guess i suck because i made a quick 300 on my bronze dotf dio :monkey2

it's just like the gas prices... if you drive less and don't buy nearly as much, the prices would drop. supply and demand my friend, supply and demand.

BINGO.

if i can flip a piece that i have absolutely no desire for and make $250-300 just a few times during the year, that almost completely pays for the marvel PFs i'll end up buying.

should we have a socialist system for collecting where everyone gets the same thing no matter what? seriously, that would be like me ^^^^^ing about the price of an original, low milage hemi cuda... i might be one of the biggest mopar freaks in the world, but since i wasn't around to buy one when they first came out, i have absolutely no room to complain about the price or lack of availability now.

basically, it's a dog eat dog world...every man for themselves...^^^^^ or get ^^^^^ed.

I don't fully agree with some of these practices to buy your collectibles, but I do see the benefits of "flipping" a hot item.

Hmmm... good post. However... The 1st piece is art. The 1st sculpt, the 1st paint, the 1st photo. That's the art. The rest are merchandise. If all copies were art then the original painting of the mona lisa would not be worth a penny more than the countless pictures and copies of it. But that is not the case is it? Just because technology allows you to copy your work over and over again, so you can sell it over and over again, does not mean that you are selling pieces of art. The 1st sculpt of Doom or Hulk etc is what I call the original art piece. The hundreds of others are mere copies. And as for your toy argument. I'm sorry but it is a toy. Just because you wouldn't give it to your child to play doesn't mean it's not a toy, it means it's an adult toy, an expensive toy. And the reason people are not playing with them is because they've cost so much and there aren't many to go around if it breaks. It's sideshowtoy.com not sideshowart.com for a reason.

Again, respectfully disagree, because it's telling everyone who buys an art print that all they bought is an expensive toy... which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Concurrently, a great number of statues are mass-produced, not limited to hundreds necessarily, but still sculpted in stone or marble... that may make it a product more than a toy. I would simply be more careful in the appellation that you designate. Toys, again, have playability. Simply because these sculpts for the statues created depict peoples' favorite characters from movie or comic series in no way makes them less valid as art.

I fall into the camp that, respectfully, adores the Doom statue but am content to do with the LSB for the time-being. The PF a magnificent piece, and I must say that it seems the definitive Doom collectible created thus far. Have to agree with Dave, though. Some pieces that one person might never part with for any amount, and which another person views as inutile, may actually have a market value of around $250. It's all a matter of personal taste when one gets down to the crux of the matter.

And with that I will end with a quote from Elijah Price in "Unbreakable" while speaking to a customer at his comic art store, Limited Edition. "Do you see any Teletubbies in here? Do you see a slender plastic tag clipped to my shirt with my name printed on it? Do you see a little Asian child with a blank expression on his face sitting outside on a mechanical helicopter that shakes when you put quarters in it? No? Well, that's what you see at a toy store. And you must think you're in a toy store, because you're here shopping for an infant named Jeb. Now one of us has made a gross error and wasted the other person's valuable time. This is an art gallery, my friend, and this is a piece of art."

What a great quote, forgot all about that scene.

I'd say Doom is worth about $1425

personally, i would pay that much for a doom if i had the money. why? its one of the best piece of art i've seen.

its not a toy. according to websters, a toy is something for a child to play with.

I love flipping. why would you not. because i was able to sell my stealth iron man (damaged no less) for 650.00 ,when it was barely worth 300 for my collection, i was able to buy a ton of other stuff. and do not even say im not a real collector. i am just a collector who will go to a different extent to make more money to spend on this hobby. if it means offering items up to the public at their determined pricing (which ends up being much above retail) then that is not my fault. its the same thing i tell my fiance, if you want it, you can get it.
