Best Classic suit - Mark 6 die cast. It's got an x-factor to it, and the toy itself may well be the best looking sixth scale out there. The Mark III and IV just don't do it as much for me.
Best Modern suit - Haven't seen it first hand, but for me the 46. Funnily enough I'm not that big a fan of it on screen, but the toy is a nice looking toy.

He must have wanted one right away, but I personally would have waited on the highly anticipated Mark VII. That's going to be the one to get for sure and I'm sure it's going to come with a fully sculpted RD head and great accessories. Total package.

Just PP'd the Mark VI Diecast at SS. Not going to get my hands on him until August but I'm sure he'll be worth the wait. Looks incredible.
It's an awesome piece. I have every armor and every version of every armor and it is definitely one of the top 3 overall.

Hey guys, here’s the deal. After years of noble resistance, I’m finally caving to the power of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and find myself in need of a HT Iron Man.

Trouble is, having resisted this long, I’m not as up on the details of all the Mark I to Mark-Infinity versions out there, so turning to my learned colleagues.

So here’s the criteria (which will no doubt be a challenge). Since this may well be my first and only IM, I’d like a version that is reasonably representative of the character across the franchise (so no Silver Centurion, etc). I’d like this to be a full featured figure with a few accessories, but not necessarily a ton of them, but DEFINITELY with an full unmasked Tony sculpt (so no Power Pose editions).

And finally (and most difficulty, I’m sure), one that won’t necessarily require me to take out a new mortgage.

So does anyone have a recommendation, or am I chasing Unicorns..?

Thanks in advance, guys!!

I am exactly in the same situation. Currently deciding between Mark XLVI from Civil War and the Infinity War Mark 50. The Mark 50 loses the mechanical edge unfortunately but might be the last suit that Iron Man is in. The Civil War suit feels like a nice blend between streamlined and mechanical, although I wasn't a big fan of the film.

I'm not a fan of the triangle chest plate of the Mark VI, not particularly iconic for me as Iron Man.

Having seen every other iron man film, I'm betting he will yet have another new suit in avengers 4.

I can't thank you guys enough for all the thoughtful and detailed responses! I had no doubt that the community would come through on this, but I was surprised that so many of you took the time to chime in. Thanks again!

So I think I'm down to three based on all of your input (in no particular order):

1. Mark IV which hits all my criteria (and I can Flex PO right now - Great idea, Motuxmen)
2. Mark VI which seems to be a consensus favorite
3. Mark VII Diecast - some day (letting me store up some cash)

I guess if pressed, I'm leaning on Mark IV because I can pull the trigger now and it comes with a terrific Tony sculpt.

Question: Some of you have suggested a knock-off RDJ sculpt to supplement the versions that don't come with one. How readily would the armor accept a third party head? I have a few custom sculpts I've used on HT figures, and some of them require a whole adapter assembly where possible, or else the head is just balanced on the shoulders ready to fall off if moved or posed any way except standing straight up. I've seen several great looking Tony sculpts out there from OSK and eBay in general. If those integrate well, then VI edges even closer.

Thanks again guys. Your support means a lot. Look for some Reps coming your way...

Almost all the stark heads on eBay will fit almost all the iron man armors with no modifications. Shouldn’t be an issue. If you find one and have a question of it will fit just ask around here. Someone will have both the same head and armor I’m sure.

Like what Motu said. Most of the newer heads fit the newer armours. If you have the cash, the mark 6 or 46 is something different in design to get right now while waiting for the diecast mark 7 over the mark 4 which will fit your criteria. Whichever you choose though, all the nwer armours are awesome!

I myself have the 6 and 46. Waiting for the dc 7 too! I also have one of the ko heads of the 46 sculpt without bruising if you plan on getting that one.

I was very much in this mood late last year or early this year. I too was looking at the IV, VI and VII. Alas I've had a need to not spend money during all this time so waiting on the Diecast Mark VII is what I'm doing. Hopefully by then I'll be able to buy it.

I think another way of making your decision again, go watch The films that have Iron Man in them. So Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Avengers, Spider-man Homecoming, Civil War, Infinity War. Choose 3 suits that you really like out of those films. Then out of those 3 choose the one that has the most screen time and affordable pricing. Then you should be able to come to conclusion of which one You can stare at everyday and just love.

You stated in your original post that "I’d like a version that is reasonably representative of the character across the franchise."

For me, the Mk 4 does not fit that bill as its appearance was strictly limited to Iron Man 2. It had some good moments in the movie, but it did not really do much of significance outside of that. It also comes with a repainted version of an older portrait which, while still not bad, is still from several years ago.

Also, check out the accessories with Diecast Mk 6 comes with versus what the Mk 4 comes with. The base alone for the Mk 6 should make it worthwhile.

It may not come with an unhelmeted portrait but as others have mentioned, you can always pick up a Hot Toys or unlicensed portrait of your liking to put on the figure should the one you decide upon not have a full unhelmeted sculpt. So I think the narrative significance of the suit and which looks best to you is most important, as well as how well received the figure is and the accessories it comes with.

The Mk 6 at least fought Whiplash with War Machine, took down Loki, had an iconic first meeting with Cap, fought Thor, fixed a Helicarrier, and then flew to confront Loki in New York. The Mk 7 fought in the Battle of New York and for me is the ultimate icon of The Avengers and Phase 1. So I would definitely choose one of those over the Mk 4 myself.

And if FlexPay is enough of a factor to be taken into consideration, then the Mk 6 Diecast Exclusive from Sideshow is up for pre-order again as they seem to have gotten additional units, which means you can Flex that right now. And you can Flex the inevitable Mk 7 Diecast when it comes out, and save up for it as well from now till then.

Funny, the 4 used to be THE iconic armor around here... people had a problem with the triangle reactor. Now they love it. :dunno

I've always liked the VI -- both for the unique triangle AND for its representation across two films and bridging IRON MAN (movie) to THE AVENGERS. It will always be iconic for just that alone.

Thanks for making this thread QuiGonFishing (and to all the folks who have chimed in) :clap I've had this same question for awhile and I think I'll be waiting on the mkVII to rep my collection. Was going to go with the 46 but my very novice mind about IM figures was not ready for the eBay prices :lol
