Seriously?
Its been 14 years since Lucas changed that Greedo shot first.
There's a hell of a lot more whining about that.

Both are wonderful examples of why people look at the majority of sci-fi geeks/nerds/what have you as obsessive, maladjusted shut-ins. Because they are. Something happens that they don't like, and they obsess over it for years, if not decades after.

You don't like Greedo shooting first? Look away or fast-forward. Or stop watching Star Wars every day, that would probably help more. Mad about Firefly being canceled? Watch the DVDs and be glad you even got one season to enjoy.

I don't understand why it's so hard to move on when it comes to fiction. It literally does not affect your daily life in any way, but you still let it bother you and whinge about it any chance you get. There are so, so many other things in the real world you could do something about if you only channeled that passion into something that actually matters.

I don't think there is anyone here not living a life because of Firefly.
The show was canceled, and some of the reason for that was the way Fox handled the show.
People just tend to put an emotional investment into things they enjoy, sports stats, soap operas, stamp collecting, even something as geeky as collecting expensive toys.
I would guess that there are more people that debate more harshly over whether or not a particular quarterback, pitcher, etc would have made a difference in a sports season. What I don't understand is the condescending attitude of other members toward the entertainment of their choice.

After all, we are ALL here spending time on a toy site. Pretty nerdy.

I'm so misunderstood. :(

No, I think you have good taste. Anyone who opposes your judgment should move out to the desert and seriously re-examine their life. Until then, they will wander in a haze of soulless oblivion.

Better?

Much, much better. :D :lol

I should save that quote and use it if anyone disagrees wih me. :lol

I'm right there with you. I'm a big Buffy/Angel fan. The shows have been off the air for years and I still watch episodes on a weekly basis, go to conventions, etc. If anything, I love the show more now than ever before.

Fox handled Firefly REALLY poorly. In fact, Fox handles A LOT of things poorly. Just ask all of the Marvel fans (including myself.) Was that the only reason? No, but it definitely played the biggest role IMO.

Firefly may not have had the biggest following, but it's holding the test of time IMO. It was a GREAT show to say the least. It got better and better for me, and "Serenity" was the icing on the cake.

I'm going to need some popcorn for this one. :lol

Pass me some. I like extra butter. Mmm, actually, I like Smartfood's white cheddar popcorn, mixed with Lay's Salt and Vinegar. Which Texas doesn't have anymore. EVIL! AND...here here! To Anzik and Chap.

I was waiting for the inevitable "you just don't get it" posts. And the giant josh whedon excuse machine rolls on.. rooooom, roooooom..

:lol

While some people are douches about it, I mean it in a purely matter of fact statement. You get the concept, like it, or you dont. It's not a tell on who's stupid, and who's smart.

It's just a strange concept for a show, which has been done (Adventures of Brisco County Jr., another show you get, or you dont) before.

That's one reason why it failed.

But at the same time, Serenity did a better job of merging the Western and Space stuff, then the entire series. Atleast I felt.

I saw Serenity first, and it blew my mind. :thud:

Serious Issues and Very Amused

Really? Granted this is just my opinion, but if anything I thought that Serenity ruined the whole concept.

The whole idea about Firefly seemed to be that it took place in the early days of space colonization, where the planets we moved to were still crude and uncontrolled fringe settlements, and the lack of infastructure pushed us back to a more agrarian and simple society (and also somewhat lawless); returning us to a time quite like the wild west.

Except for a brief scene in the beginning, Serentiy seemed to ditch this idea entirely in favor of the more cliche sci-fi environment of endless metal corridors, docking bays, and random crates lying around everywhere.

Even Serentiy, which used to be decorated in earth tones and lit using warm lighting to convey a sense of home in the ship (essentially the entire point of the show) was changed to be cold, dark, and blue.

Plus the asian crap, which was best handled with subtlety in the tv show was cranked up to 11 in the movie, to the point where it seemed to dominate everything about the movie's design elements. It got to the point where at some parts I got the impression that they intended for the movie to be a live action anime.

The mannerisms was still the same as any western. They just had more money so they didnt have film in backwoods Cali for the battle scenes.

I always thought the backwater planets should've been a bit more tech filled, dispite their location, and all that. I dont want space ships and flying cars and such, but maybe some cool light fixtures. Atleast on the planets as shown in Serenity (pilot) and the episode where River and Simon get captured.

Thats one thing I actually liked. Sure they could have brought some fancy technology with them, but electronic things wear out and break down very easily. And since computer chips are so sophisticated that very few people would be able to repair them, let alone make new ones without any infastructure. Sophisticated technology would become a very rare commodity and most likely held aside from everyday wear and tear. It made sense that as time went on and it became rarer and rarer that they would have to abandon it in favor of simpler and more accessable tools.

I also liked how there wasn't a lot of the floaty technology, like in Star Wars or Star Trek where all sorts of things have anti-gravity where they can just float around without having some type of engine keeping them up. It looks like in the Firefly/Serenity universe that technology is very expensive and rarely used.

As for the western thing--there's really not that much of it in the movie, I had to tell my friends before watching the TV show that it's much more western on the show.

I love both aspects. But I wont lie, the sci fi is more appealing to me. I would've enjoyed a "tad" more sci fi scenery on the backwater planets.

The backwater planets were exactly that. Backwater. That's where they spent the majority of their time because they were outlaws. There were times during the series that they needed to visit core planets, and those places were much more sci-fi.

I don't think the war between the Independents and the Alliance was in the earliest history of the post-Earth settlements. It was probably quite some time after. The core planets would have been mostly developed by the time of the Browncoats. Even in the first episode, the Alliance fighter jets are pretty advanced, and the Alliance cruiser that interupts their salvage job is gigantic.

I'm sure there's probably a date somewhere that says when the war started--it probably ended only a few years before Firefly. And from the Shephard Book comic it was going on when he was a young man. They've probably been in that solar system for 200 years or so

That right there folks is irony. :clap

Yeah, I know all that....but I just would've liked to see more tech stuff. I never stopped watching it because of it....it was just a simple, non issue....issue. :D

I was mostly addressing Shadow. Serenity did show off its bigger budget, but it didn't disrupt anything the series established. High-tech on Alliance planets, low-tech in the outer planets.

And those outer planets would play out like a western. It's the frontier, and the people out there don't have much more than people did in the American west.
