Tricky question ...
I think it will pretty handily top TDKR domestically and overseas. (Especially with the 3D ticket price bump.)
Can it top Avengers domestically? I think it's gonna be tough. Even with the ticket premiums. (Though I doubt the HFR ticket price bump will be a huge factor since there are only going to be about 100 screens in the world showing it at 48fps. 3D will help, HFR probably won't. At least not so much.) I think beating Avengers domestically will be a long shot.
But internationally? They've got a shot there. That's where these movies will really make their bank. Remember, Middle-Earth is a HUGE draw internationally. The box office breakdown on the LOTR trilogy was approximately $1.9B coming from international territories with "only" $1B coming from the US. That's almost double. (Give or take a few hundred mill!)
I would think that trend would only grow. Especially given that it's got an international cast, crew and source material. In fact, in the last ten years the international markets have only grown.
Superhero movies are hugely popular, of course, but traditionally until recently they haven't done quite as well outside the U.S.
So while I don't think Hobbit 1 will beat Avengers in the states, I think it has a chance to beat it's worldwide totals because it will do better internationally. Either way, I think it's gonna be close.
Just my two cents.
