I'm in full agreement with this statement:

"I'm not a Winona hater...but Spock's mom isn't Vulcan, isn't brunette, and isn't the type that Winona is good at," a user going by the name Toroth's 1st Officer posted in response to the announcement on a thread entitled "What the F---!" on TrekWeb.com.

Very appropriate thread title as well. :lol

I don't really care about the casting per se, but changing the species of such an important character is stupid. There's no way they're doing that. It's gotta be just a misquote or some sort of misunderstanding.

If they are changing Amanda that means either A. they are changing Saviks species or B losing a vital aspect of what makes Spock, Spock.

Yea, but like I said.. I really hope this is a misquote but even still.. Don't like her as Amanda. This is the first piece of casting that is truly WTF. But if this does crash and burn I still have TOS on DVD and the films, we would just have to accept that Star Trek is dead for the time being and also that it really is successful only when looking forward.

Sounds like maybe Variety got it wrong and then E Online grabbed at that and took it to the audience they knew would give the most outraged soundbites - online Trek fans.

Here's the entire quote from Variety about her race:

"Paramount Pictures and director JJ Abrams have set Ryder to play the Vulcan mother of a young Spock (Zachary Quinto)."

The pic they have of her is scary. I used to have a crush on Winona, but that's just...

Dark Horizons is reporting Amanda still being human.. but I still don't know about Winona for the part.

The more I hear about this project...sheesh.
I'm sticking by my original thought on this.....

gobble, gobble.

Winona Ryder will be fine if she is playing a human and not a vulcan. She has the same build and bone structure as Jane Wyatt.

The same frail look.

She just better not be a Vulcan!!!!!!!!

Indeed it is. In the opening as Spock is doing his training the computer asks "How do you feel?" tp which he has some issues understanding and thats when Amanda comes in and they talk about being half human. If you miss the first 10 minutes or so then you may have missed this part.

Hmmm, maybe I just wasn't paying attention. Gotta watch that one again.

She's an excellent actress - Heathers, Beetlejuice and the ever classic and not to be forgotten...

Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael.
