Re: Wonder Woman for late 2013

Please stop calling her your favorite character when you clearly know nothing about her or her history. It blows my mind. What about her makes her your favorite character then?

She's my favorite after I loved the justice league cartoon, and that animated movie with Kerri russel as her voice. She is just so cool how they made her so tough to take on supes and fly too. She is also one of the strongest female characters. I was never the fan of her comics but now I don't care I like this character! :clap way back in the days I like supergirl way more but now she's only a tiny teenager. Batgirl and huntress was kind of cool too. But not like WW. She is the full package for a great superheroe!

Ok I get that you like her. It's just if I were to call a character "my favorite", or a book, or play, or author, I would be educated on said character, book, play, author, artist etc. I would be able to truly back up "why?".

he did back up why. Just because you or someone else is more familiar with the comic book version in no way takes away from the person who only knows the character through the cartoon. I am sure there is a whole generation of super hero lovers out there now who only know the characters based on their movies and never picked up a comic book. I love how comic book elitists can infer that others are not "educated" because they don't know the character through the same source material :slap

Technically they aren't if they only know a character through a certain media type. You're talking about characters with 50+ years of history. It's be like saying someone knows about Hercules because they watched the Disney animation vs. actually having read the myths and legends.

Can you say you like a character, sure. Can you say you're educated about that character, no.

CBG doesn't even know she is an Amazon, and he watched the movie where they went on and on about it. Even quoted the actress who stared as the voice talent for the film. CBG kind of brings it on himself.

Yeah, education takes time and will. I hope to see CBG earn the some day.

you lost me, technically they aren't what? He said Wonder Woman was his favorite character. How does not reading 50+ years of comic books about her change that? He didn't claim to be an expert on the character, just that she was his favorite. :dunno

again, how does any of that preclude Wonder Woman from being his favorite character? My 3 year old loves Batman, should I tell her he can no longer be her favorite superhero because she doesn't know enough about the character :monkey2

lol, we can't all be as educated as you. Weren't you the one who was getting all bent out of shape because I was mocking your critique of the Life Size Batman bust? Its nice to see you have no qualms dishing it out on others.

LOL! This is all true. However, none of those peeps go by the moniker of....wait for it.....COMIC BOOK GUY! :lol

I'm sorry but with a name like that, he leaves himself wide open to the teasing he receives. I will say though, he is a great sport about it and takes all of it in stride. CBG is good peeps.

he should have called himself Comic Book Character guy.

And he is right, she was awesome in the Justice League cartoon. Not Batman awesome, but awesome non the less. That was one of the best cartoon series ever made, and it was more adult themed then kids themed. So I really have no problem with a guy who loves a character because he saw her/him on the cartoon and doesn't read comics.

Sorry next time I'll bold your own statement so you know what I'm talking about, see above. And if you Reread my statement I said "You can like the character".

gotcha :slap

I disagree with your premise though. I don't think you need to have read a Wonder Woman comic to be "educated" on the character. The cartoons did a wonderful job of incorporating her background. And just how much of the comics do you have had to read to be considered educated? All of them? Golden age? Modern Age? New 52? Do you have to have watched all the tv shows, cartoons, and any other incarnation of the character? I saw the unreleased TV pilot a few years back, am I more educated then the guy who didn't?

Don't you think there's different levels of educated? Just as the guy who takes High School anatomy is less educated than the guy who has a PHD in Human physiology.

But I wouldn't call the person who read the cliff notes "educated". Generally speaking, Watching a single cartoon movie an hour in length with a summarized history of a character wouldn't make me say someone is educated in the character.

EDIT: And I'm not holding it against anyone either, to be clear, I'm just saying I'm not giving you a geek card just yet. ;)

Re: Wonder Woman for late 2013

I simply meant by "educated" that for someone called "Comicbookguy", and who refers to a character as his favorite, he doesn't even know what her costume looks like, or the simplest things abou said character. My 3 year old's favorite is Dora. No she doesn't have to know everything about her to make her the favorite. And I never said he needed to read 50 years of comics to get that either. I don't read WW, and I know more about her. By educated, I didn't mean reading the whole back catalogue. But he should at least figure out who she is. Unless he's into just her looks. Then I kinda get it.

I absolutely agree with your statement. However, the people throwing that word around here are using it to try to denigrate a person's opinion, and at the same time trying to make themselves look in some way superior. His depth of education on Wonder Woman in no way precludes him from saying she is his favorite character. There are nerds on here who's favorite characters are anything with boobs. Knowing or not knowing the entire history of that character's back ground won't change that.

Its kind of like those guys who toss out they studied anatomy and/or art as they put down your opinion of a particular piece of art, as if that made their opinion more educated. :dunno

CBG isn't a child though man... And he did bring up the movie, and the Justice League cartoon BOTH of which went over her Greek Amazon origin story EXTENSIVELY!!!!

lol, we can't all be as educated as you. Weren't you the one who was getting all bent out of shape because I was mocking your critique of the Life Size Batman bust? Its nice to see you have no qualms dishing it out on others.

You know what... I AM EDUCATED... I can LEGALLY put a WHOLE BUNCH of letters after my name. Now I NEVER have, NOT ONCE, but it doesn't mean I am ashamed of the fact that I got a pretty good brain sitting on my shoulders. What I am not is better then ANY one else, but it does mean that I remember the BASIC details about the characters that I call my favs, and I remember stuff fairly well. If CBG hadn't picked the monicker he did, and had been StatueLover no one would hassle him. It was an unfortunate name choice to be sure

I also LEARN... And love watching others learn. I can't wait to see CBG learn because his PASSION for the hobby is incredible, and when he gets up to speed he will be a huge asset to the community.

As for you csi you seem to be having a bad day. You okay Dude?

CBG is definetly good peeps ... He has one of the BEST attitudes on the board. Like I said when he gets up to speed he will be an amazing resource of knowledge to the entire community.... He is a good egg.

Oh I agree with you. I'm not putting him down about liking Wonder Woman either. She is, after all, my favorite female character as well.

However I do reserve the right to berate any post dealing with Rob Liefeld. :wink1:

wait, so its ok to pick on a guy because of the name he chose and mock any of his statements about comic book characters? Dude, all I am saying is you threw a fit when I made fun of you over your constant negative critiquing of the Batman bust. You even threatened to call a mod if I didn't stop disagreeing with you every time you posted those opinions. If that is how you react to it, shouldn't you offer the same level of courtesy to others that you demand for yourself?

I'll be honest csi, I don't believe CBG is totally in the dark. I think he likes the attention. The VERY awesome movie and cartoon series, that I myself own, that he quoted cover WW origin very well, and if he is a fan of those then he should have a better knowledge of her appearance and back story then he apparently does. It is starting to feel like a bit of a show, but he'll I could be wrong.

I will give you this ... You are right I will back of his apparent lack of knowledge when it comes to his fav character, and stop with the fun making..... However, like Josh said Liefeld is a whole other kettle of fish.

Re: Wonder Woman for late 2013

Considering the medium, no, I do not think there are real levels of education for understanding comic book characters. The problem is the nature of how they work. Because of changes in writing and art styles, and I will be blunt here, there is little consistency among characters over the years. Truth be told you can hate Wonder Woman in one comic run, love her the next. Really enjoy her portrayal in a cartoon and then hate how she was handled in a movie. Unlike with a normal string of novels or even just anime and manga, just about anyone can have a "canon" incarnation of a comic book character regardless of how radically different, such as Frank Miller's version of pretty much any character.

As far as I am concerned you need only be exposed to that character to decide if you enjoy him/her. Bale's Batman is very different from New 52 Batman, but I think someone need only watch Batman Begins to be able to say something like "I love Batman." If this was a consistent tale like Lord of the Rings, obviously one should have more information on the characters before declaring such.

For example, I grew to love Shazam based solely on seeing him in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. I had never been exposed to him prior, but when I saw him shout Shazam and strike the opponent with lightning, I thought it was awesome. Since then I've seen a few appearances of him in comics and clips from cartoons on youtube, but I will still firmly tell you he's my favorite male DC character based on that little information I have on him. I really enjoy his design and think his base concept is so true to the spirit of classic comic books and I really enjoy that aspect of the character. I don't need seventy years of comic book experience to tell you I like Captain Marvel a bunch.

So yeah Comic Book Guy is going to miss out on some details here and there, but who cares? Nick Fury is black in the live actions and Ultimate universe so why would it be a shock to see him believe Wonder Woman is Asian? Hell next month they could kill her off and replace her with a Mexican version, or just retcon her identity AGAIN so that she was actually Stalin's daughter.

Comic books are fickle, inconsistent, and lack real continuity so people cannot relate it to something like human anatomy LOL that's an awful comparison.
