I think it's just the opposite. I think that the fans willed themselves in to thinking it was a good movie. I call that, "The Prequel Effect".

After 4 years of saying that TDK was such a brilliant film, and thinking Nolan could do no wrong, most people, if they were being honest with themselves, would see that the movie had more than a few "minor flaws". It was almost if it was directed by someone else entirely.

And if it was, then it seems like the fans would have been allowed to hate it.

I just thought it was a terrible movie.

The drift of my argument wasn't that we would all expect Avengers to make over a billion (which I give a lot of credit to Whedon for), but that you would expect it to be a big hit. And in that sense, you wouldn't need to be a comic geek to recognize the importance and appeal of seeing characters who were fairly well known at that time, and had headlined their own films getting together for the first time in an over the top action movie.

I see what you were saying. Duly noted.

That was a pop culture event that had a massive hype built up around it for 4 years, I don’t think Whedon had much to do with that, Marvel Studios gets all the credit there.

Marvel Studios absolutely deserves the credit for doing the homework with the solo films, the universe building, and then having Avengers as the incredibly successful payoff......but Joss Whedon's mark was all over Avengers: the character interaction, the dialog, the humor. He absolutely deserves credit, too.

As far as directors for X-Men go, I think Matthew Vaughn/Jane Goldman was the best talent the series has had. Singer's had some good films and some bad films, but Vaughn's consistently impressed me. Can't wait for Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Thats fair, I’ll have to agree to disagree with you on that. We all can’t like the same movies.

He definitely does, but I honestly believe that movie would had to have been Batman and Robin bad for it not to be successful.

DOFP is getting Minimates, also.

Really this is the primary reason I don't buy into arguments that they aren't being licensed. You could say that Marvel/Disney is behind the scenes making threats to Hasbro or whatever, but I just don't know that Singer's character designs are as marketable to kids as the generally more colorful stuff you see from Spider-Man and Marvel Studios.

Minimates don't require likeness approval.

True, but almost no one here is making the argument that holdups over likeness rights are at play here. My own suspicion is that likeness issues are really a thing of the past with comic/action/sci-fi type movies, because it's expected to be a big part of the merchandising of films nowadays and so these issues are worked out contractually ahead of time. Unlike, say, the '80s, when no one really thought very seriously about it when a movie like Aliens was released.

The argument at play here is that Fassbender's likeness rights are included in the X-Men deal, but the hang-up is that the talent still hold approval rights. You can sculpt Fass until the cows come home, but if he keeps rejecting the sculpt, then why keep trying??

The general argument (not one I am making) is that Disney/Marvel controls merchandising rights over Fox's Marvel films, and are not allowing your Hasbros' and Hot Toys' of the world to produce merchandise from those films, as a means of hurting Fox somehow. The assumption is that merchandising promotes the films, which is related to the news about Fantastic Four comics being shelved as a means of Marvel trying not to help promote Fox's forthcoming film. The issue of likeness rights is another one entirely. It would be surprising to me if all the actors from the Marvel Studios and Sony films were happy to approve use of their likeness--assuming they had the right to make this approval, instead of the studios--while the X-Men actors were much less open to it.

If Fox would sign over their rights to merchandising money like Sony did, we'd be flooded in X-men toys. Feige isn't being facetious when he says they've got no interest in getting Spidey... Sony does all the work and Dis Marvel is cashing in while Sony is hoping to break even on a major project.

Shame I would love some xmen figures from the movies I don't blame marvel for what they are doing though.

Same, don't blame them, but I do feel screwed a bit due to lack of available product. Maybe they'll miraculously come to a deal. I'd love to see them send FF back to Marvel for Fox to have more control over X-property product, but it seems like they're both deadlocked atm.

Well see how FF is going to do i don't see Xmen going any where now Spiderman on the other hand may it depends.

Safe to say X-men is practically a Fox property now concerning cinema, now that they've been able to rekindle it after 14 effing years straight no way they're ever gonna let it go.

That's a cool idea Niltusk, as I find FF in the X-verse completely boring and pointless. Although Rob Keyes from screenrant did make the tie in that Apocalypse apparently got power and tech from the celestials, and Galactus is an enemy I believe it was, of the celestials. He saw in opportunity for a tie in between x-men and FF via that route. As Fox refuses to give up Galactus/SIlver Surfer.

I don't think merchandising rights weigh up to having FF cinema rights honestly... Unless the FF reboot bombs, which honestly, I hope it does. I hate the casting with, ironically, the exception of Jordan. Would be great if Marvel got FF and Gal/Surf back and Fox just focussed all their effort on a massive x-men universe.

John Ottoman also deserves a shout out, love the score of DoFP and the editing was supurb. So much so that I think DoFP deserves an editing oscar nom, but that probably won't happen. Hope they at least get an honorary special fx nom or win. And to some extent even cinematography would be justified imo.

I can't see any actor noms honestly, not even McAvoy. Not that oscars matter much, but it remains an occasion of paying big respect to a film by the industry so it's not meaningless to me, regardless of how effed up the process of oscar voting is.

Yes very excellint price make u go boom boom in de bedroom. Potato.

I caved in an saw this movie. Granted, it was paid for by my friend, I'm glad I went. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the cast, the future X-Men, McAvoy, Fassbender and of course Hugh. Quicksilver scenes stole the show. Really well done. Too bad they couldn't do this type of a movie with the previous films, minus First Class.

Still would like to see this franchise rebooted because they ****ed up so many of the characters and X-Men history, but the current direction of the franchise is a great substitute until then....
