Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

So when does The Doctor ship?

Waiting to see one in hand before ordering. Wasn't impresses with their other 'doctors'.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Supposed to start shipping after 12/6 I believe.

Some pics from another thread:

Here are Cyber's pics of the 4th Doctor, in case people aren't members of the GB forum. They are screencaps from a video review. I would say I do think the final scarf coloring is disappointing, but other than that I'm pleased by what I see so far. Looking forward to some pics going up! I'm excited the scarf has a wire in it for posing!

Words cannont convey how excited I am about this... makes me want to put all that energy into making a Newberry Police Box. :panic:

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

As much as I appreciate all and any pictures of this, I hope that no one is basing their decisions, such as to buy or not buy, on them.

The lighting and focus are sadly really messed on this. With that light background, the white balance is way off, and in turn this will crush any hope of proper contrasts.

It's a good point. I mean, hopefully we'll see some really nice pictures soon. I just mentally compensate for bad lighting, etc, which is why if a pic isn't perfect it doesn't worry me. I focus on the things we CAN tell pretty well from this, like the nice tailoring on the costume and how cool he looks in action. :)

Very true but didn't someone who saw it in the flesh say they were disappointed in how he turned out? There's no denying that he lost a lot of detail during production.

Well, I think the point is that it's actually hard to see the detail, here. So there's no way to really say, yet. :)

BUT, I will say having two different people who saw it in person comment on how it didn't look as good is what is actually somewhat more worrying to me than any pictures.

That being said, I learned long ago to judge these things on my own, because I've found it can be VERY subjective.

Can you quantify for us exactly what "a lot" of detail that was lost entails? Because to my eyes looks exactly as I expected it to turn out - and no doubt it turned out better since I am basing that off pictures that aren't exactly HiDef.

Maybe it's just a matter of taste? But why start the "This is Terrible Dance" before the music has properly started?

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

It looked weird to me. It looked thinner in the face and the paint job wasn't helping.

No facial detail, he looks like a young man. His face isn't weathered like the production sample was.

All this based on some pics that were screen grabs from a video someone took in circumstances where the lighting was terrible and the video was grainy? Well forgive me if I don't demand a refund quite yet. :lol

Seriously though, I was excited before I saw those pics and I am actually MORE excited to get this piece after having seen those pics. Different strokes for different folks I 'spose. :)

Are you saying that you cannot see his 'crow's feet' around his eyes even in this hideously blown out photo...?

...Because I certainly can. Like I said, it's a terrible picture, and it make the figure look like 12 inches of garbage...but let's not dismiss what is patently obvious!

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Yeah it's pretty clear that the details have all been washed out because of the camera. But still, some detail loss can almost always be expected to some degree. There is no casting technique that will preserve 100% of all of a sculpts details.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I know someone who was at the show and they raved so clearly it's going to be an 'eye of the beholder' thing. Personally I find most 1/6 sculpts capture the essence of the subject well whilst rarely being a spot on likeness. Personally I'm losing sleep cause I keep thinking of photo ideas for his arrival. PLUS, having paid in full already, I want his mug on this year's Xmas card so he better arrive in time to do the shoot and get my cards done at Moonpig! It'll be like the old Dennis Allen Print days all over again!

The production sample seemed to accomplish it quite well.

Indeed. The purpose of the production sample is to show exactly what will be mass produced. I have no reason to believe that it won't look like that and you are basing your fears off of a dodgy quality screen capture.. sooooo? :dunno

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

No need to panic. These are not great photos. The lighting is not great, and they still look pretty good!

Let's assume Pond was an aberration and hope for the best! :)

Thought I made myself clear earlier, someone in the flesh saw it and was disappointed in how he looked. It's a good looking figure but it could be a lot better.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

That would be me. :)

Well no it wasn't actually terribly clear since I was responding to a comment you made based on the photograph posted up thread.

Note: you didn't say "Sue said he looks like a young man and she/he says his face isn't weathered like the production sample was".

In any case, I sure wouldn't sell the farm based on some iffy pics and a first hand account from sue (who has impossible high standards when it comes to this kind of thing, IMO :lol)
