Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Tough room.....

Decadentdave, the hair is a mix of taupe, burnt sienna, pastels and lots of trial and error. I'm not sure how I did it to be honest. I'm just glad it came out alright. Well, alright for me anyway!

Is it really that I didn't come through on Obi and Mace, or is it that there wasn't really much to fix as the figures looked damned good out of the box?

Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do better besides your "not feeling" it? Anything helpful is always...well......helpful.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

I actually like how you did the drybrushing.

yet the most "suffering" part would probably be how you took the picturs LOL.
it seemed to wash out all the details, and that's primarily what everyone was disspaoitned about when the production pics were like the SDCC one.
I bet a nice fine quality picture with flash might do this one justice?

And I added a comment on the other thread about improving the Anakin.
The eyes should look a little more lazy, or half shown.

FOr obi-wan
Try to add some color and tone to the cheeks, so they "sink" in a bit more, as seen in this pic:

https://simonz.web.elte.hu/poster/ep3-poster-obi.jpg

and the hair color might've been a little off
because the brown in your headsculpt is redish, burnt sienna.

the actual hair color is closer to burnt sienna (orangish)

hope that helps bro!

I hate to say it, mikey, but this one doesn't seem quite up to your past work in my opinion. The skin tone appears a bit ashen, and the grey in the mustache and beard are overdone. I thought your Mace and Han repaints were amazing and really brought out the likenesses, but this one just doesn't wow me like those did. Perhaps pics without flash would do it justice.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Mikey, I don't care what anybody else says because I'm definitely feeling it! Maybe because I'm new here and just seeing your work blows my socks off but I have to say that the out-of-the-box factory paint just sucks hardcore until you worked your magic and painted in the hues these sculpts were screaming for. Your Obi is by FAR the best one I've seen EVER and Mace too!

I like the paint job, but I think more of a natural light minus the flash would help a lot. I can see it in there. Good job Mikey. I especially like the hair.

Alright so I'm a lazy photographer....

Are these better? Or is it really just the paint?

HOLY CRAP, it's like night and day! That paintjob is gorgeous! I once again bow to the master. :bow

A word of advice, no more pics with flash... EVER. ;)

Booyah! There you go dude. Now all you need is at least a 3 megapixel camera. :lol

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

I like it better than Sideshows, but you need some natural lighting. that lighting is throwing off all the colors, its hard to tell how it really came out.

Get some pure white bulbs or something. they only cost a couple of bucks.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Looks much better w/o the flash... That is an excellent repaint. I'm still happy w/my factory job, but its nice to see what a lot of talent can really do to the sculpt!

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Very nice Mikey!!! I love the hair color you went with! Fantastic work! I'm doing an Obi for someone as we speak, and while it's not really going for an entire paintjob, it's more like trying to match the SDCC Obi. Very hard to do, but I'm working on it.

Awesome Mikey.

Based on the pics you provided, I have to say that I'm not "feeling" this repaint either for several reasons (which may or may not have to do with the photography, so keep that in mind).

The paint gives the figure a chalky appearance, which never looks good in my opinion. Also, the hair and beard, while now a more accurate color, lacks any darker shading that is evident in Ewan McGregor.

However, the eyes...those I think turned out extremely good. They give a sense of life to the figure. So kudos to you on that part, Mikey!!

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Yeah, I really wish I was a better photog. The hair has all kinds of mad shading in it, but you can't really see, I'm afraid. Sigh.

Deke, I love what you did to the background! Looks a lot better!

One last pic before I move on to group shots.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Customikey, great job as usual!

Your repaint looks more like the SDCC prototype than the actual production figure itself!

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Looks much better than the first pics you showed for sure. However, I still think the factory paint job is better. Especially the skin as SL said the skin tone still has a chalky appearance unlike the factory one. The hair appears to be too light as well with no dark highlights. The factory paintjob could possibly be too dark but has light highlights. Mace was much the same as far as the skin tone. He looked really chalky. You do a nice job mikey please don't take this as a slam.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

custommikey:
haha, i guess it was the photographing!
because that definately fixed the problm with the hair leaning more towrads burnt sienna, rather than raw sienna!
good job!
