Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

When I can afford it Im buying that GG OB1 recasting it and slappin' that likeness on every prequel Kenobi figure I have with some small modifications.
That GG statue is just uncanny.

Its missing the moles though so it isn't uncanny. Andy's is much better. The factor paint is just hiding its true uncanny nature.

Its in the eye of the beholder, and my eyes say GGs digital scans trump in this bout. Dont want to get flammed, its my opinion.
Ive been dissapointed in every Star Wars actor likeness thus far that SS has done and am going to lenghths to meet my tastes and thus far GG is meeting my tastes.
Adding moles is less taxing then having to repaint an entire sculpt to "bring out its true uncanny nature"

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

if you had the dolllars to recasts, or to buy a GG statue and be-head it..
then hiring boot23 or skrel, les, or customieky to repaint the SS would be far less taxing no?
but you are a great customizor so I do not doubt ur intentions! :lol

those scans by GG are rather an insult to sculptors since it potentially does affect their business and makes others compare their works of art to machines.
its like comparinig a photograph with a painting, but that is personal preference i guess.

the reason sideshow wouldn't offer the heads separately is because ......

$50 for a full figure that includes
clothing
accessories
full body
painted head

and then paying only 1/5 of that for an unpainted head doesnt sound too much of promise to the market...

some would choose that option, but I'm not sure sideshow would buy a couple more metal molds for that option

When your dealing with a figure that is based on a specific actors/actress' portrayal I want that figure to look as closely as possible to said actor/actress.(That goes double for iconic characters) Human sculptors tend to introduce or inject a "style" or perceive attributes of the subject matter being reproduced that another sculptor wouldnt necessarily perceive. The digital scan introduces no bias. It seems for better or worse SS has an ongoing issue with head to body proportionality. Again, not a problem in the digital scan process.
Ive simply come to terms with the fact that SS's StarWars figures are just going to be fairly expensive base figures that I will have to modify to meet my standards.

I also cant imagine any self respecting sculptor being insulted or having an issue with the digital process.
Talents like Trevor Grove will always have job security.

this is off topic, I just wandered in here and saw the latest posts.:)

gentle giant's digital scan work is nice, no doubt about it. the prototypes at comic con were impressive. I actually didn't very much like the star wars likeness pieces though. the harry potter and lord of the rings were breathtaking. the chris lee was great! and the Viggo aragorn

I still much prefer the stuff that Andy's done and other great likeness sculptors. there's a flair to it that's missing in the digi scans. likenesses are a pain sometimes though, so it's only obvious why digital scanning is so popular...this IS just a business I guess...but with a human touch, it sometimes has shinning moments that are nothing short of art! no doubt!

I agree 100%....Sculpting, to me, is much better than digi scans. The human aspect and work that goes into them adds a demension that digis dont offer me.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

would you rather have a nice hand-painted piece of your face or a regular photograph? even if it shows a slight distortion in likeness, most would rather prefer the ART PIECE
and sideshow creates figures of art, and SO should gentle giant....
and they do...but a digital scan is a regular photograph...

but anyway, I do think the GG"s likenss are superb, no doubt
and I wouldn't blame you for wanting their sculpt for the custom figure, but as I said, it would actually be less expensive to just ask a good repainter to supe it up

:lol Appears to be lighter? Dude, everyone who saw him at SDCC was blown away, not just by the flesh tone details of his face but the film-accurate lightened paint apps of his hair, eyebrows and beard texturing. This is why EVERYONE was asking Brant if this was the prod paints apps, because many of us thought they had IMPROVED it...

This is what we got, with blaring light source from overhead and is about as light as it could appear.

pjam, I agree with you 100%, the SDCC proto was beautiful with a capital B. I would be more then delighted to have that as the final production piece. But I can also except that it was lovingly hand painted by a gifted artist, and I realize that though the artists painting these in china are probably talented in their own right, they do not have the time to replicate the SDCC proto a few thousand times. It's been beatin' to death but there is no way an assembly line system can paint nearly a 10000 of these with that kind of detail. It's just not gonna happen. Am I happy with the production piece? Yes. Could it have been better? Yes. But realistically the final pieces will most likely always be a slight downgrade from the prototype. It's not a perfect world, nor should it ever be. Persian artists weave imperfections into their rugs on purpose, they could be perfect but they realize nothing in this world ever will be. ;)
Yes the eyebrows are a bit bushy, yes the grey highlights are a tad overdone, the hair is a tad too dark. Do I wish it was better yes? But I'm satisfied with what I'm going to get. It's only fifty five bucks, I can spend twice that on friday night with my friends and have nothing to show for it on saturday. But I'll have a slightly imperfect albeit quite satisfying representation of Obi-Wan for the rest of my life. I hope that as time passes things will only improve, things usually do. But with great expectations can come great disatisfaction. I understand we all want the best from this line, some of us have waited decades for this. And so far I'm quite pleased with Luke, Han, Mace, Ani, Vader, Kit, and I'm quite sure that Obi will be fine when I've had fun and futz with with him for a few hours.
I'm an artist myself and I'm often the most critical of my own work, I can respect other peoples art as well. :peace

Why dont you apply your analogy to the characters equipment as well?
Because nobody wants an "artistic" version/interpretation of a blaster or a lightsaber hilt thats why.
They want Anakins saber hilt to look like it did in the movie (and rightly so) and Anakins face is no different.

those weapons are usually hand sculpted as well.......
I believe you even commissioned a headsculpt yourself so I don't understand why you would imply the degradation of their skills to a machine...
I don't see my analogy to be fitting in every case but I wanted you to understand the fact that be-heading a GG head and then recasting it onto your custom figures is more expensive than just repainting an already existing sideshow headsculpt with superb likenss that was sculpted by a talented artist
(no offense implied)

and btw, ditto what pjam said! ^^

Aww shucks, thanks.

btw, pjam, which Jim do you want? Young lizard king Jim in leather, or older fat Jim with a beard and sun glasses? ;) Personally I'd like the older crazier fatter one, and a nice fat grey haired Jerry Garcia with missing finger and all would be great as well. :lol

Perfectly stated. Not much else can be said on the subject.

Young Jim, 1968 Hollywood Bowl Jim, or any Jim with leathers and concha belt. As you can see I have proudly displayed his mugshot in my signature! But I don't want some crazy Lizard dance pose...

I would back you PJAM after Cash of course or they could release them at the same time.
