Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

well, i'm sure if sideshow had never shown that suped up prototype at the comic con, then none of us would have fully reallized the absolute great likeness and potential the sculpt itself has.

i'm pretty sure they put that prototype or pics of it as a reference to all those painters, and those painters just figured that they're try to get as close as possible.
like MOST toy companies though,
they do, in fact, say "prototype" shown, etc, and Enterbay actually made sure that the prototype they had shown ad the SDCC was of an inferior paint job, so that the actual production piece could only be better.

and I don';t think this production piece picture is much of a problem. you can always cancel the order after you've seen the descrepancy with the pic online and the prototype pics.
but of course none of us really want to ,
since this figure alone is awesome for the price
but compared to the prototype, i guess its a downfall/..

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

OK, so from now on we are just going to guess what these figures are going to look like when they ship out simply because the picture happens to say "prototype" on it...

In that case, why bother showing us pictures at all if the finished product can look so different!?!

I'm sorry but the whole "prototype" argument just doesn't fly with me. I can understand if the final product varies from the prototype but the difference here is like night and day!!!

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

We need a moratorium on all Obi threads.:lol

All in favor say I.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

You guys act like it's only Sideshow who's done this. Every damn figure company (high end AND low end) have done this. Really, it's not just figure companies. As a stretch, fast food anyone?

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

the best way to get this kinda stuff heard to sideshow is actually contacting them thorugh the suggestions service they provide via customer service ;D
so...I'm betting if all 50 of us who voted and posted told them this...no doubt would it be brought to their attention :D

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

I remember when I first saw pics of the Obi 12", and thinking that everything looked great, bar the eyes - now the eye's look great, but everything else seems to have slipped a tad. (Am waiting to see mine for real though).

That doesn't make it any better nor is it an excuse...

I know, I know. I did this quick, varied lighting. OK, here:

The 2 close-ups are with moderate sunlight. Now, if you'll let me focus on some better shots...

:D

Unbelieveable detailing pictures!

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Seeing all these pictures raises my disappointment a little. At first I was afraid his hair was going to be as godawful dark as Anakin's, but it looks like it isn't. I'd be really happy if the hair were the same shade as the beard. As it is I'm still slightly disappointed, but not as let down as I felt when I saw the production pictures on the site.

And as a side note, remember folks disappointment is a relative term referring to something not being as good as you expected it. If someone expected the Obi-Wan to be of the same quality as the Luke then naturally they are going to be disappointed. Sideshow set the bar high with Luke and alot of people will be disappointed when sub-Luke figures come out. But its not their fault they have the expectation that all figures look as good as Luke, unrealistic expectation or not. Nor is it sideshows. As my professer puts it, "Everyone does the best job they can all the time with the tools they have available to them...and the results aren't always pretty."

Eric,

In the whirlwind of the quick bashing your OB1 head got, nobody said how welcome it is to have another sculptor join in. I know you've been posting for a long while, but I didn't realize that in addition to the web store and making customs, you're sculpting and casting as well.

For what it's worth, I don't see Ewan in this one because the face is more square than his. It misses a very slight taper from cheekbone to the corner of the jaw. It's looks as though it's probably more successful when viewed from a 3/4 angle. But the detail in the sculpt is impressive, and the casting looks good -- we don't talk about casting much here but it's critical.

If it's any consolation, I don't see Russell Crowe either, though I see why people say that. Furroughed brow, colorless mole on the forehead between the eyes. Probably fraternal twins separated at birth.

I hope to see more of your sculpts, and would like to know more about your experience with casting.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

While this seems to be slightly off-topic, there is a point I'm getting to...

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to see a Bespin Han Solo in person. I have never been so shocked in my life. Seeing the figure in person versus the various professional and amateur pictures...none of those pics (even the good ones) came close to revealing just how good the sculpt and paint application looked in person. Yeah, the jacket is too small/tight, but that's another debate altogether.

The point I'm getting at here is that I, for one, will need to wait until Obi-Wan is in my hands before I can make an informed decision about the quality of the work. It's already happened in this thread...some pics look very good and other pics make the paint application look atrocious.

I think I will now have to agree with all those members who profess patience and waiting until the product is in hand.

Anyways, just my humble opinion... :)

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Someone really should write to sideshow and tell them that their photographer is not doing their job in making sure the figure looks the best it can be in the pics. Looks like they need a lighting lesson.

A Professional Photographer should need no lessons.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

SSC could stand to invest in both painting and photography training for some of their employees.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

i think they manipulate the photographs with photoshop afterwards
they probably raise the lighting and contrast so it brings out the colors more, and that probably screws up the color of the hair and details.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Wait, I know, I know, sideshow makes a mediocre prototype to sell figures, then they make an even better one that you see just shortly before it is released to whip everyone up into a feeding frenzy, and then they put bad production pictures on their site so everyone thinks the figure is going to suck, then they send out a decent mass produced figure that looks leaps and bounds better than the faux bad production pictured on the site so everyone loves their production figure because it looks so much better than the bad production figure on the site.
