Both good points. My feeling is that since this is a giant looking robot, that is a plus. Howard loves him some robots, and so does the East. As for what's profitable, I don't think Howard cares at all. I can't imagine Hot Toys raked it in on figures like Sweeney Todd, Tonto, etc. I think it all rides on what Howard likes and wants as a doll on his shelf. :lol

Your partly right. The tonto figure bombed. Worst seller ever. But it is about profit. Not total dollars but margins. Iron man is the exception to nearly ever rule.

With Sweeney Todd they have a next to nothing licenses fee becuase of the relationship with Depp and and Burton. They both often waive likeness and lic fees to promote the film or DVd or some charity. Then figures like Crane where subsidized so that hot toys had no outlay (in the form of prepaid orders for figures) for the Burton show.

With other licenses they will and should opt for an unknown product (lone ranger, tron, ect) to test the market and see if they can have a hit instead of going to the third or fourth character in a film, when the largest most popular character didn't sell super well but ok(MOS superman sold ok, but was not a "hit" so they make a couple figures they already started on and move on)

It is about profit. But it's not just about largest seller or most popular. It's margins.

I'm sure sales were poor on this figure, but man....if you'd seen it in person at SDCC or somewhere else....it was truly a work of art.

Maybe. There's a laundry list of figures that as soon as HT previews them collectors who've been in the game awhile will all agree that the figure is destined for clearance with triple rewards and free shipping from the day it goes live, and it isn't limited to Johnny Depp.

POTC Angelica sold so poorly it was used as Sideshow's packing material for awhile on top of giving them away on every week. Tron Legacy Kevin Flynn; Sucker Punch Amber; etc.

There are also a list of figures that we would not have seen get discounted like crazy as well; Silver Centurion, TDW Loki, and others.

So has there been an official announcement of cancellation? Writings on the wall, but still.

I doubt they'll even bother to officially cancel. It never went up for PO, the franchise is dead and they didn't sell out on Spidey or Electro.

Captain Harlock was a huge bomb! As a result, HT canned his hot blonde female sidekick, Kei...

God damn it! They were gonna make Kei??? I would have loved that. I love my Captain Harlock, but he's a bit lonely. It seems like I collect all the figures nobody likes - Tonto, Maleficent, Captain Harlock, War Machine die cast. Poor investments :lecture - But man, do I love them.

The Harlock movie was very cool with a lot of great character designs.

The design was awesome. The story sucked big time. But I still love it, the designs are so great. Would have loved more characters. But the movie flopped and died, and with it, all the potential.

Spidey sold really well. Electro... I'll probably end up buying it - just cause I have all the other characters that people hate.

Why do you think spidey sold well? Once a figure releases is not how you judge sales. The first 3 to 6 months after a figure goes up for preorder (length of time depends on the lead time between PO and release) is what decides if a figure sells well. And the first few months of spiderman where not a hit. So as far as hot toys is concerned it was a mid level seller. Not a hit, not a bomb. But not worth further investment.

How do you know?

How do you know?

I've explained how I know, or where/how I get my info many times. I don't feel like going through that again.

Spiderman is a top seller in units sold overall. When you factor in every release. But he is also the second highest licensing fee. And his approval process is longer and more complicated then and marvel studio figure. Again, total sold is not how you judge the figure. It's margins. As it is (or should be anyway) with amy business. The margins on spiderman are lower then iron man. Lower then most alien and terminator and POTC and many others. If the sales where great they would have pumped out all kinds of stuff. And different variations of the character (battle damage, a Parker figure, ect). Wouldn't matter if there was a reboot coming or not. Gonna be 2-5 years before those figures arrive.

I have a Spidey, and I love it. Looks great and is extremely poseable. Though I have zero interest in the Rhino.

Cause, as someone else wrote, it was the third best selling figure. I didn't say they made tons of money on him. Just that he sold well.

HT has the technology to make her awesome. If you look at A1 Widow and TDKR Selina Kyle. Imagine a rooted hair blonde figure in a red vinyl catsuit (ala A1 Widow) with faux leather boots and gloves (ala Selina Kyle)? Oh and big guns, too? It would have been a real alternative to all the Widows HT has ever made...Oh man...

My plan was to get Harlock with his throne and have Kei sitting on the armrest...with no Kei, my Harlock money got eaten up by a closet set for a certain winged vigilante...

That is a shame. Harlock is cool. But he is a bit lonely. I'm building a new office (very small) but I'm looking forward to pitting Harlock against someone... Maybe Spider-Man?

Kei would have been sooo awesome. Such a shame that the movie bombed.

Also, we need more female figures. I have a daughter who is 11, and I think more powerful women would be great. + I think Kei is smoking hot :panic:

Which Widow is the best?
