Both good points. My feeling is that since this is a giant looking robot, that is a plus. Howard loves him some robots, and so does the East. As for what's profitable, I don't think Howard cares at all. I can't imagine Hot Toys raked it in on figures like Sweeney Todd, Tonto, etc. I think it all rides on what Howard likes and wants as a doll on his shelf.
Your partly right. The tonto figure bombed. Worst seller ever. But it is about profit. Not total dollars but margins. Iron man is the exception to nearly ever rule.
With Sweeney Todd they have a next to nothing licenses fee becuase of the relationship with Depp and and Burton. They both often waive likeness and lic fees to promote the film or DVd or some charity. Then figures like Crane where subsidized so that hot toys had no outlay (in the form of prepaid orders for figures) for the Burton show.
With other licenses they will and should opt for an unknown product (lone ranger, tron, ect) to test the market and see if they can have a hit instead of going to the third or fourth character in a film, when the largest most popular character didn't sell super well but ok(MOS superman sold ok, but was not a "hit" so they make a couple figures they already started on and move on)
It is about profit. But it's not just about largest seller or most popular. It's margins.
