Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Hehe, yep must have been time consuming; finding the worst possible picture of ANH Chewie and then the best angle on prototype TFA Chewie to prove a point... ;-)

I thought it was one of the better ones that I found. Not trying to prove anything. Here is a stock photo. Doesn't look much different to me.

As for the new figure, I wonder if the arms can be made darker by soaking with tea or coffee? I've seen that used before to darken doll-type hair. It is always easier to darken than to lighten.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Chewie II is so divisive. As much as I'm a fan of the original release, I think this one is better. They're both flawed, but I really think the colour and mouth on the TFA version is better, and with skilled futzing it'll be a better representation.

He looks great, if a little too bright, but now that we know they've made a Chewie with an articulated jaw there's very little reason to buy this if you're an OT fan because eventually we'll see an ESB then ROTJ Chewie with the same head but darker fur. If you're a TFA fan, a completist or you just don't want to wait then this is for you, but I'm more than happy with ANH Chewie until OT Chewie 2.0 comes along.

It just appears to be a pattern Hot Toys follows. Release something close then re-release an improved one later. Why not just do it right the first time?

One thing that is different is the mouth is slightly more closed on the stock head.

Umm, something called money....ha ha.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

I might spend another $350 just because he's got a bandaged arm. I have the ANH version.
Seriously though, he'd look good displayed with Rey.

This is why:

Because we will still buy it. :lol

I like cool looking alien figures. I have the ANH Chewie and will buy the TFA one too. Funnily, it's the only Star Wars figure I have from Hot Toys (Rocket and Groot are my other cool aliens, and a few Predators).

maybe cause HT gets better over time with sculpting, materials used, paints, technique etc and of course making money is a factor but if it wasn't then the consumer wouldn't be getting better or new figures over time.
ANH Chewbacca was first announced with pics fall of 2014 and now june 2016 with TFA Chewbacca. So, in the time period HT got better with the hair and face sculpt.

But with Chewbacca, this is one unique figure cause how hard is to do hair especially for mass production. So, if HT finds better synthetic hair, better hair technique, or use real animal hair, then I expect HT to updated ANH or TFA Chewbacca

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Sorry, but this just impresses on me how irreparably terrible the figure's face looks. :lol

You wouldn't have to so much futz it as completely modify it out of almost all recognition.

But remember, we ALL thought the snout on ANH Chewie was irreparable too, and while no amount of futzing will resculpt the "bones" of a figure, we got some pretty amazing results out of that irreparable ANH Chewie. Maybe not perfect, but FAR better than anyone was predicting when those first Comicon shots emerged. All I'm saying is that reception of this Chewie is at least a measure or two more positive than the original ANH version. I think we're going to be at least as impressed by the transformation of TFA Chewie in the hands of our best futzers as we were when the collector loved ANH Chewies began to be unveiled. Time will tell...

I agree. I'm sure we'll see some really well futzed TFA Chewies. It looks like they didn't change the underlying structure for this Chewie. At least not with regard to the snout.

There are still parts of ANH Chewbacca's face that no futz job fixed, at least from what I can remember.

On TFA Chewie: the eye positioning, lip colour, colour of the hair around the forehead, the nose, the philtrum, the shape of the chin - all off. Some of that is fixable, some of that can be disguised, some of that can't be.

I do think that if this were a human sculpt (or at least being held to that standard), the reaction would be far harsher. And I wouldn't say that the response to this has been more positive than ANH Chewie. Back then there was optimism that the final product would be different after those Comic Con photos were posted, then the good futzing results and positive reception from collectors. A large number of the postings in this thread have commented on Chewie's derpiness.

Ok... I don't think you're saying anything I didn't say in my earlier post, except that you are doubling down on pessimism regarding what we're likely to see from in hand efforts from members. I never tried to suggest that ANH Chewie went from garbage to perfection with all its faults fixed with some pastel placement abd fur adjustments, but there's just no arguing that those improvements made a lot of people do a 180 on their assessment of the figure.

You may turn out to be right about TFA Chewie. He might turn out to be irreparable. But the Internet does odd things with personality and ego on forums. I hope the just because you've publicly staked out the negative ground on TFA Chewie that you won't be married to that opinion no matter what we see down the line in an effort to not be seen as a flip flopper....I'll do the same. If it sux, I'll be happy to say so.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

I did not like this Chewies face when I first saw it but it is definitely growing on me. I actually really like it now and will be in for both as long as the final products are not too far off. I hope they do the same for ESB and ROTJ as I would like to get the set for each film.

Looks like his upper lip is detached in the secret base pic above. That's throwing off a lot too.

Re: 1/6 Hot Toys - MMS - Star Wars: Episode VII - Han & Chewbacca Collectible Figure

Chewy's face is too much off.
