Yeah, mine flaked even before I even got to display it. Some bits of the red paint flaked off out of the box just from the static of the plastic wrapping around the shield, unfortunately. I purchased the figure brand new in box but it was earlier this year, so the shield had been wrapped up for some time. I'm certain the shield is plastic though, being that it is very light. TFA shield was a bust out of the box for me, so my TFA Cap is wielding the clean shield that came with the first Avengers Cap, while the first Avengers Cap has the battle damaged one that he also came with.

Sorry, I'm a little new here, so I'm not very familiar with the acronyms, does TFA mean the first avenger? I'm a bit confused.

Indeed. Some of the commonly used acronyms in this section that I've seen are:

TFA - The First Avenger
AoU - Age of Ultron
TWS - The Winter Soldier
TDW - The Dark World
IM - Iron Man
MIB - Mint in box
MISB - Mint in shipper box
UU - Ultimate Ultron
UP - Ultron Prime
CW - Civil War
GA - Golden Age (Captain America suit)
GotG - Guardians of the Galaxy

I'm certain there's a lot more, but hope that helps. :)

This part is still not fully making sense to me.

teh "first Avengers Cap" he's referring to is the Cap from the first Avengers movie. It came with 2 shields, a clean one and a battle damaged one.

Thanks for the explanation! I missed the "s" at the end of the "Avengers", that made it really confusing, I normally see people call it A1. It's been a long Monday...

Did you coat the two Avengers Cap shields? Otherwise, they'll both flake like the TFA shield.

I haven't. I purchased him slightly used (box was opened and figure was inspected and then placed back in box) off of eBay back in January. Both shields seem to be holding up well paint wise thus far. The only shield mishap was one of the handles on the clean shield came unglued, which I re-glued using Loctite gel glue.

What do you coat the shields with?

I used a Tamiya TS-79 semi-gloss clear coat. I can't seem to find the video tutorial I used, but here's one that's pretty similar:

You dont have to coat the bd shield. Wont flake. At least no issues with them thus far and i have two of those.

Cool, thanks for the vid! :)

I was thinking that also. The finish on the battle damaged shield doesn't seem as glossy and prone to flaking as the clean shield. The clean shield seems like it's identical to the shield that came with TFA Cap.

You're welcome! The clean shield is identical to the TFA shield, so expect flaking there. I do seem to recall reports of the BD shield flaking as well; it does have the same electroplating paint process. Either way, just keep in mind that the spray coat just keeps the paint from falling off; it'll still crack underneath. :(

Has anyone customized a pointing hand for their AOU Cap? I know some people have used the WS hands for this, but I wonder if one can be made out of an existing AOU hand. Captain America should be able to point as if directing the Avengers!
