After repeatedly failing to get this likeness to improve (by using real hair and other types of modifications), I've turned to the DX07 (damaged version) head sculpt to get a more accurate-looking ANH Luke. With a badly re-painted hairpiece from the original head added to a sliced up and modified DX07 head, the expression seems to me like it makes for a decent version of Luke from this scene. (I'm sorry if this idea/realization has been made here before, but combing through more than 400 pages in this thread is too daunting for me.) Any thoughts?

And here's a shot from the front for further context. Do you guys think it's worth continuing to tweak this, or is it not an improvement over the original?

I'm with you - Luke just seems to be so tough to nail. Very, very sad that the JNIX one just didn't quite get there either (I honestly find that headsculpt to be unnerving/unsettling to look at - a very strange phenomenon.)

I do think the battle damaged HT ESB Luke is the best Hamill likeness so far, but this set-up looks a bit older for some reason - maybe ROTJ era. The contrast of the battle weary face and the shiny gold/copper ANH hair also make him look like a sun-bleached homeless person - maybe it's just the lighting though.

I actually think it looks like a pretty good likeness of Luke from that scene.

That's a relief. I wondered if I was just convincing myself (out of false hope) that there was a decent likeness with this face/head on the ANH figure. Thanks for taking the time to post a response.

Yeah, I've tried softening the features with light sanding and re-painting, but I see what you're saying about a ROTJ vibe. Don't know if I'll be able to de-age him enough. I also don't think lighting changes the problem. Here's a couple of different lighting angles and intensities, for example. Thank you as well for posting. I'll keep working on trying to get this Luke looking younger.

Yeah, I like it, but with darker hair it feels more like it would be a great ROTJ Luke (though the hair was a touch fuller in ROTJ) ANH Luke had a quite different look to ESB, and by ROTJ he no longer had that "youth" vibe to him. He looks a little craggy in some shots (Leia even more so by ROTJ.)

It's undoubtedly a great Hamill sculpt though - the best - and probably works from a distance as ANH Luke.

Looks like DX07 Luke with some mods. Looks cool, the picture taken from the front it looks like his hair sits a little too high. Have you thought about using the hair from SS X-wing Luke?

Yeah, it's the battle-damaged HT ESB Luke sculpt with bloody wound sanded off and sculpted neck cut off. Looks like the hair might be from an eBay knock-off ANH Luke sculpt (or a repaint.)

There's actually a ridge in the hair piece that I can still sand down to get the hair to sit lower on the head. I'll give it a try. Thank you!

Yep, TaliBane nailed it: ESB DX07 (damaged version with wound sanded and painted over; and, yes, neck cut away). And the hair piece is indeed from a knock-off ANH Luke (and repainted - to be repainted more carefully in the near future). I worked with the ANH knock-off to try getting that face sculpt to be a better likeness. It didn't work out, but I still got use out of the hair for this mash-up version.

Sanded the inside of the hairpiece to bring the bangs lower on the face. Also repainted it again to lessen some of the metallic shine. Here he is next to a stock HT Luke. Which is Mark Hamill, and which is the stunt double? :)

And it's gonna take a while to get from this . . .

But, at least I've got the little round table from the SS R2-D2. Gotta start somewhere. :lol

Nicely done brother, you can tell all your hard work has really pay off.

Thank you; much appreciated. And thanks again for pointing out the hairpiece needing to be lowered. Looking at it in person, that change did make a significant difference in terms of conveying a stronger Luke likeness.

I see plenty, not sure what's HT and what's KO.

I'm wondering if anyone got this one and whether they could adjust away the terror eyes. O_O

The "Oh, crap!" eyes can be modified on that head sculpt, but for some reason, the battle-damaged head still has a stronger likeness. It might be the slightly open mouth that does it. Luke often has that kind of expression throughout the film (see below), so it might just have the added benefit of familiarity.

LukeMouth.jpg

Having the modified ESB head next to the stock HT head, I've been taking note of the differences between them (ESB head has a slightly narrower facial structure and much thinner bridge of the nose right between the eyes, for example), but the open mouth seems to be the most obvious/significant difference. Since I have a knock-off ANH head that is now pretty useless without a hairpiece, I'm gonna see if I can carve/sand the mouth to appear slightly open. I'll also sand the bridge of the nose to be thinner. If I can pull it off, we'll see if it improves the likeness at all.

Here's the knock-off ANH Luke head after making the mouth open up a bit and thinning the bridge of the nose between the eyes. Apart from those changes (and repaint of the face and hairpiece), it's the same sculpt as the stock HT next to him. I don't know if this made for any improvement at all, but it was fun trying.
