I thought Rogue One was awesome. It's a great stand alone movie, but I also think it's a great companion piece, or prologue to A New Hope. For me, it puts the film in a whole new light having some history to the events leading up to it. That's something I don't think the prequel trilogy really did at all. It's just full of stuff I wish I could forget.

Agreed. It was a great companion to the original and enriched the lore of the movies I loved as a kid.

And I just love that RO ends with Vader standing strong as Leia flees into space but then the ending to ANH is the exact opposite. I agree that RO is a great stand alone on one hand and a great lead in to ANH on the other.

The difference is, the events of RO were relatively inconsequential; they weren't essential to the saga.

Whereas the back story of Anakin, Padme and Obi-Wan were.

I can't wait for the blu-ray. Also really hoping this will finally be the year we get an unaltered/despecialized edition of at the very least A New Hope with it being the 40th anniversary. I know Gareth Edwards talked about Disney having a 4k restoration they had just done which they had him watch before filming RO. Question is was it the original version, and will we ever see it?

There are whispers that at Celebration LFL will announce that the unaltered and fully restored 1977 film will be re-released in theaters in May and put on blu-ray in the fall. Fingers crossed! :rock

I don't see how Anakin, Padme, or Obi-Wan's stories prior to the OT are essential to the saga. They could have not been made, and those movies would still be the same. The same could be said for Rogue One as well to be honest, but both exist, and what they add to the original saga is up for debate. Personally I don't think the prequel trilogy added much of anything. Some of the Obi-Wan stuff is okay, but for the most part I think those films just detract from the OT. I mean, who can hear the name Anakin Skywalker now, and not just roll their eyes in disgust?

Absolutely. Fingers crossed. Arms crossed. Legs crossed. Cross whatever you got.

Yep. :lol

And I agree that nothing outside of the OT is essential. The only factor in justifying a film's existence apart from the OT is whether it's well made or not and RO definitely was, even to the point that I think that RO + ANH is a stronger narrative than ANH by itself.

I can't believe people are actually taking time to say Rogue One was pointless or non essential or whatever. None of these movies are essential. They're all just expanding on the original Star Wars movie, which we now know as A New Hope.

We all love Star Wars, we're getting more Star Wars, the stories are expanding...aren't these good things? Everybody wins. The PT wasn't perfect, or even great, but it certainly had its moments. Rogue One was a fantastic movie that fit right into the storyline. The Force Awakens set up for more story.

I'm not crapping on anyone's opinion at all, we're all entitled to them, but I don't understand why Star Wars fans are so hard on their franchise. It's almost like a lot of people would rather be unhappy with the product than just enjoy them for what they are.

You've said it!

The more Star Wars, the better. I can name dozens of awesome moments from even the weaker Eps I and II.

People take these movies too seriously. They focus on dialogue delivery and stuff, when the whole point from the beginning is that this is a saga of Saturday matinee serials based on Buck Rogers. Kids stuff!

The same hate for the same reasons befell Indy 4. That Indy survived inside the refrigerator is ridiculous. But so was jumping off a plane on a RAFT. A Nazi pilot following Indy into a tunnel. Power stones? Really?

The problem is people. They have lost the ability to have FUN.

The Internet allows people who have nothing good to say, to say it anyway. Its sad.

Star Wars fans... some of us are spoiled brats. Damn if you do damn if you don't. We get new films now, and they protest at every turn.

My sentiments as well.

Sometimes it's funny to read people crap all over a lot of the films in the SW section on a toy message board, but I presume they're in the SW section to begin with because they like SW?

However, that being said, I do agree that TPM and AotC are the weaker films, the latter of the two more so. Both have their moments, but I don't really watch either of them. If you watch RotS (which I actually do really like), I personally think that's enough info you need on the backstory before the OT.

I enjoy the SW Universe and like it or not, Episodes I-III and R1 are part of the SW Universe.

Honestly, I've been seeing a lot of negativity in a lot of the Marvel, Star Wars, and DC movie threads regardless of whether they're well received or not. It's some of the worst I've seen on any forum. Kinda stopped going into them cause of all the complaining, unfortunately.

Yes, the movie discussion threads are cesspools. Unfortunately, they spill over into the figure discussion threads as well.

I think that RO + ANH is a stronger narrative than ANH by itself.

I agree with this. I can't wait to get the blu ray and watch both movies back to back on a lazy off day.

There was a point in the middle where RO started to drag on a little but the last 1/3 or so of the movie is one of the better finishes I can remember.

The real pity is that the ot gave us hints of a great untold story and so did the pt. it just failed to tell us that story. Watch the trailers. They're great. There's some really good stuff in the pt but a lot of rubbish too. I would love to have see anakins fall - but it wasn't delivered

Rogue one is different because about from maybe one of two of the cameos was really well thought out and you can totally ignore it if you want. Loved it.

He has about 10 memorable lines in that outfit, basically everything he says while in that outfit is a gem. Don't think Jyn has any.

"Where did you dig up that old fossil?"
"Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?"
"Boring conversation anyway. LUKE, WE'RE GONNA HAVE COMPANY!"
"What an incredible smell you've discovered!"

You can't expect memorable line from somebody who is looking like a cosplayer.

That pretty much sums up why I've never had a problem with the PT. They're the world's most expensive B-movies, and a lot of their perceived flaws were intentional choices.
