Yeah, acetone can do that. I use non acetone based nail polish remover, it's great to use and doesn't seem to harm the vinyl. If there's anything stubborn, I coat the head with Oxy spot cream, leave it overnight then strip again with the remover and repeat as necessary till everything is removed. Butcher's mutton cloth (Often found as a polishing cloth at auto supply stores.) is good to use for stripping, it's not abrasive like say a scotch pad can be.

Thanks for the feedback. The know acetone softens vinyl and used the shrinking technique once, but this deterioration really caught me off guard.

I will have to try the oxygen bleach approach. I use pine cleaner for resin heads. I once left one in solution for over two months when I moved and it painted up just fine later, no effects whatsoever.

Just so you know what I was talking about, I meant Oxy spot cream, the stuff similar to Clearasil that you can get from the chemist.

As vinyl is porous, it soaks things up, especially nail polish remover, you think the head is dry on the surface, you go to paint it and things go awry. The Oxy also helps to dry out the sculpt fully. You just scrub it off with water and washing up liquid and once you dry the head thoroughly you're good to go.

Just starting my Indy repaint, I can't tell you what a joy it is to see Harrison staring back at me. I can see Trevor's original sculpt again and he so nailed it. Just hope I can do the same with my paint job.

Hi chaps (and chapess's) I have just made the first mould for the SS ROTLA hatted indy!! I am so excited I can not wait to to cast it up.. Although that fedora is gonna be a pain in the boootocks!! I love a challenge!!

Thanks,

I'm going to take my time over this one, I can get overenthusiastic at times and rush things. I just have to tell myself that this is my Indy and there's no rush!

I got to thinking about an item of Indy's apparel that nobody seems to have gone into at any length... socks! Surely he must have worn a pair or two!? I dug some out that came with an old North Africa Luftwaffe pilot I once used for an Indy. I tried one on a leg, put the Alden on and it seemed just right. What it also did was to stop the foot moving about inside the boot like it had done before. So, it may well be something I'll incorporate into my custom.

cheers Ron, got a micro bubble on the ear which is a bummer but I will hack the neck off in a bit with my sharpest axe and see where we go from there!! V excited. Also Paul sent me some bits in the post for my Indy, :) a shirts some slacks, medi boots a whip!! oww so chuffed!!!!!!

I think if you are taking copies to practice painting then that's all fine, but borrowing sculpts to wholesale cast them is crossing the line I think.

totally agree and I would just like to state that I have no intention of wholesale casting them! It is not why am am doing it! I make NO money from dollies what so ever and I am not into it to sell, or make money. I am just helping out folks as much as I can, if you check me out hopefully you will see this to me true. I am truely and deeply sorry if I have upset you or any one else over this.

It's always been a bit of a minefield. If it's for your own use then, well, it's not a commercial project. When it is, then cans of worms get opened. Not that it stops people though, eBay is littered with recasts!

Anyway, I just watched Raiders to get me into the spirit of things and it's amazing what details you notice that you hadn't before. It has really got me going and I will endeavour to do the best job I can on this. I was building and painting garage kits in the early 90's so it's not like I don't know my way round a repaint. I was better at small details back then though, probably down to building aircraft kits. Whatever, this is a project I'm really excited about. I've been an Indy fan since Raiders first came out.
