WSB-TV in Atlanta says a source told reporter Mark Winne that Cam Newton's father has admitted he asked for money from Mississippi State for his son to play there, but neither his son nor his wife new about it. The report said Cecil Newton said Auburn did not know of the request for money.

Mississippi State Athletics Director Scott Stricklin issued a statement tonight that said someone had asked for money for a "student-athlete" to play at the school, but the request was denied.

The WSB report said Cecil Newton Sr. has admitted having conversations with an ex-Mississippi State University player about the possibility of obtaining money if Cam Newton signed to play football at Mississippi State. The WSB report said Cecil Newton steadfastly maintained that no money ever changed hands. Cecil Newton said his son's hands are clean, and has made it clear that Cam Newton and his mother knew nothing about the money discussions, nor did Auburn .

Winne said the source acknowledged sympathies toward the Newtons. The source said the player and both parents have demonstrated a willingness to cooperate with the NCAA.

I don't doubt that his father did those things, but I don't buy that the son was innocent. He was a thief and a cheater at Florida. Just a sad, pathetic situation all around.

I don't doubt that this kid was involved somehow. Just man up and admit it. He'll come out looking better in the long run. Honestly, this goes on all over the country a lot I guess and I'd bet especially a lot in the SEC. Now, the NCAA needs to come up with something to give these kids a bit of money to help reduce it.

:lol

Though you do tend to see more of the thuggish and/or above-the-law behavior from better athletes (which the SEC clearly has over all other conferences), I don't recall Reggie Bush, Maurice Clarett, or Marcus Vick playing in the SEC. Football players doing unethical/illegal ____ does happen everywhere. It's part of the mentality.

The number of arrests of players for teams like Tennessee and Florida over the last few years are an absolute embarrassment, though.

Yeah, it happens to confrences all the time but outside of USC (thug U) I'm never shocked when I hear it coming from the SEC. I can't help but hope a couple of teams from that conference get nailed to the cross. Maybe bring the teams, players, coaches, and fans back down to earth a bit.

I'd say he is innocent untill proven guilty. Who cares if he cheated on a test at some other school. Sounds like the rest of the SEC teams are just butthurt.

It will come down to if Auburn paid him to play for them.

He's got a history of acting above the rules, which means that he doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt the same way first time accusees do IMO. And I find it hard to believe that his dad is such a scum bag that he would exploit his son and influence his decision on where to go to school only for his own selfish purposes (his dad admitted to soliciting money from MS state, claiming his son and wife had no knowledge). It doesn't surprise me that his dad might be involved because the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but you've gotta figure that the dad was, at least, trying to get some of that money for his son. And if the son knew about the money and made his decision with that being a part of it, then he's culpable.

But yeah, if Auburn didn't pay, then it doesn't matter anyway in terms of illegality. As for being against the guy b/c I'm a non-Auburn SEC fan, I actually want Auburn to go all the way if LSU can't (and they probably can't at this point), but fair is fair and I don't like cheaters no matter who they are or what they do.

It comes down to if he was shopped by his dad...it doesn't matter if the Barn paid him or even offered money, if his dad shopped him to Mississippi State he is ineligible and thus every game he played in this year would be forfeited.

Well it looks like Boise and TCU may get a shot at the national championship thanks to Cam Newton and his father. I was kinda iffy if they really did anything but everyday there is more people coming out saying what they did.

The only way Boise and TCU get shots is IF Oregon and Auburn both lose a game. There won't be any sort of resolution to the Cam Newton saga until after the season is over....hell, it took 5 years to conclude the Reggie Bush mess.

You know what will bring them back down to earth? Someone beating an SEC team in the BCS Championship game....until then, enjoy the ride.:yess:

If any games get forfeited, it won't happen until well after the season is over. The NCAA is notoriously slow in their investigations.

My Buckeyes won again!

And they still won't win the Big 10....and may not get a BCS game. But, I can see tOSU being ranked lower than Wisconsin at the end AND getting an at-large bid over Wisconsin because tOSU travels well.
