Why don't we just agree that both Avatar and Hurt Locker are both overrated?..
Touche. And just because someone says The Hurt Locker is overrated does not mean it did not deserve to win BP people...

The next film to be overrated/over-valued by geeks is probably the one in Kuzeh's new profile/sig pics.
tron prob will be too
While I agree Avatar did not win as many awards leading up the the Oscars, I must say it's reign as box office king and cultural phenomenon, plus the fact that it is a James Cameron picture, would have put it over the top.
How can a movie that only made about $12 million domestic be considered overrated?
I don't think it's flawed at all. I've articulated what I liked about the film - the characters and milieu are fascinating and beautifully written. It's tense, emotional and completely involving. I went into the film expecting nothing really - I'd never been impressed with Bigelow's films and I really don't like war movies set in the current day - so that I liked the film as much as I did really surprised me.
Seriously? Just because a movie isn't a box office smash doesn't mean it can't be overrated.
Again, IMO there was no way Avatar would have been left off. The fact that Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time obviously helped its chances, but like I said earlier, the best directing awards more so than not go hand in hand with the best picture awards.
Last year's best director noms were:
* Danny Boyle – Slumdog Millionaire
o Stephen Daldry – The Reader
o David Fincher – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
o Ron Howard – Frost/Nixon
o Gus Van Sant – Milk
And what a surprise, the Best Picture noms were:
* Slumdog Millionaire
The Reader
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
How about the year before last?
* Joel Coen and Ethan Coen - No Country for Old Men
o Paul Thomas Anderson - There Will Be Blood
o Tony Gilroy - Michael Clayton
o Jason Reitman - Juno
o Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
The Best Picture noms were:
* No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Michael Clayton
Juno
Atonement
Sure Atonement did not get a Best Director nod but I think we could all agree Atonement was an overrated film and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly certainly deserved the BP nod more than it did.
Year 79th Academy awards? Same thing, with the exception of United 93, all Best Director noms were also the BP noms. While I agree Avatar did not win as many awards leading up the the Oscars, I must say it's reign as box office king and cultural phenomenon, plus the fact that it is a James Cameron picture, would have put it over the top.
I don't think Avatar is a cultural phenomenon at all. A ton of people have seen it, but the film itself has had almost no cultural impact whatsoever.

Define a cultural impact. You are gonna get wack-jobs hung up on any major sci-fi release, as that genre seems to attract the crazies. Based on what I've seen, the influence of Twilight on tweeny-boppers is a lot more significant than some screw-balls here or there citing Avatar as the basis of their new religion or whatever. I'm not arguing that this movie will or won't have a Star Wars-type impact on the world, but I agree with SideshowDusty that it's certainly too soon to know, and I'm not sure that some wacked out Palestinian activists means much.
Its just a group of crazies dressed up like cat people. So what? That doesn't mean it has had a massive cultural impact. For me, it takes more than a handful of examples of crazies to exemplify that.
He's not nuts, it's just his opinion. Everyone likes different things. I probably will never see The Hurt Locker because I'm not interested at all in war flicks, especially newer ones.
To both of you, my post was not just in reference to the Hurt Locker, but Inglourious Basterds and Moon as well. Those two were also amazing films and for him to say that they were "Lame" and "Boring" really makes me question his taste.
Ween, you'd be very surprised at just how many 'Chick Flicks' I like. I love all different kinds of movies and genres (except musicals).
WTF! GHEY!
Thank you, Ween.
If me disliking those two movies makes you question my taste, I dare not tell you other things about me, lest you really just write me off all together. I cannot abide most Quentin Tarantino movies, and Inglorious Basterds was no exception. Moon didn't have enough of a plot to keep me interested. It all took place with one character, in one building, and just didn't have anything interesting about it, in my opinion. It almost felt like a live action Wall-E, only I actually liked Wall-E.
Actually he drives onto the Moon at one point.
And goes down stairs.
