I just think avatar was better but thats just me. Hurt locker wasnt scifi and i love scifi movies.

The next film to be overrated/over-valued by geeks is probably the one in Kuzeh's new profile/sig pics.

tron prob will be too :chase

While I agree Avatar did not win as many awards leading up the the Oscars, I must say it's reign as box office king and cultural phenomenon, plus the fact that it is a James Cameron picture, would have put it over the top.

I don't think Avatar is a cultural phenomenon at all. A ton of people have seen it, but the film itself has had almost no cultural impact whatsoever.

I don't think it's flawed at all. I've articulated what I liked about the film - the characters and milieu are fascinating and beautifully written. It's tense, emotional and completely involving. I went into the film expecting nothing really - I'd never been impressed with Bigelow's films and I really don't like war movies set in the current day - so that I liked the film as much as I did really surprised me.

But... POINT BREAK!!!!

Seriously?:lol:lol:lol Just because a movie isn't a box office smash doesn't mean it can't be overrated.

Ok, let me qualify; overrated by whom? Critics possibly, but not by audiences at large --- hardly anyone saw the film. :lol

Again, IMO there was no way Avatar would have been left off. The fact that Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time obviously helped its chances, but like I said earlier, the best directing awards more so than not go hand in hand with the best picture awards.

Last year's best director noms were:

* Danny Boyle – Slumdog Millionaire
o Stephen Daldry – The Reader
o David Fincher – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
o Ron Howard – Frost/Nixon
o Gus Van Sant – Milk

And what a surprise, the Best Picture noms were:

* Slumdog Millionaire
The Reader
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk

How about the year before last?

* Joel Coen and Ethan Coen - No Country for Old Men
o Paul Thomas Anderson - There Will Be Blood
o Tony Gilroy - Michael Clayton
o Jason Reitman - Juno
o Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The Best Picture noms were:

* No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Michael Clayton
Juno
Atonement

Sure Atonement did not get a Best Director nod but I think we could all agree Atonement was an overrated film and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly certainly deserved the BP nod more than it did.

Year 79th Academy awards? Same thing, with the exception of United 93, all Best Director noms were also the BP noms. While I agree Avatar did not win as many awards leading up the the Oscars, I must say it's reign as box office king and cultural phenomenon, plus the fact that it is a James Cameron picture, would have put it over the top.

While I understand your point, and it's solid, and definitely one that should never be discounted. The other part of your post with examples of where BP and BD don't correlate also could be argued just as strongly as your initial point, because it does happen. In this case however, with those previous examples you mentioned. All had very strong awards seasons leading up to the Oscars. They were being recognized by festivals, guilds, critics, awards shows. Avatar was not. I'll do a little research, but I'd be willing to bet that Avatar is one of the least lauded films to ever recieve a nomination only being topped by other films that were nominated this year, such as Blindside and District 9, which definitely wouldn't have made the cut last year. This year was a different beast and included a little something for everyone with 10 noms. So I'll stand by my statement as I'm sure you will yours because there is no way to ever know. So cheers.:duff

I have the HL coming Friday on Blu. I'm really looking forward to seeing it. I like War Movies for the most part and like them even more when they have a story behind it. Everything I've read about the movie says it will be that and then some. As far as Avatar being overrated or not. I don't think it is. Its a damn cool flick to watch and I enjoyed the heck out of it. Do I think its the best film ever no I don't at all. IMO its not as good as my three favorite films of all time but its one I look forward to having on blu and being able to watch many times over.

As much as I dislike to, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. It's had quite an impact in the culture - jokes for standup comedian fodder (Colbert, etc), someone dressed up as a Na'vi at a Palestinian protest and got shot at ( https://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,585658,00.html ), people getting tattoos, learning the language, etc. There's no way to tell 100% at this point in time, but it looks like Avatar is going to be around, culturally, for a while... people from all over the world recognize it. Only time will tell if it can stand up to the test of becoming a 'classic' - but for now, it's pretty ubiquitous. (Hey, I can admit when my predictions are wrong... doesn't change my opinions or how much *I* personally like or don't like a film)

There have been many worldwide news stories, spoofs, jokes, etc. about the film from every angle.

^^^^

I agree.

Thanks for the solid argumant there... :)

I had been away from this thread for a while and had hoped that the whole AVATAR debate had burned out...

...oh well.

Define a cultural impact. You are gonna get wack-jobs hung up on any major sci-fi release, as that genre seems to attract the crazies. Based on what I've seen, the influence of Twilight on tweeny-boppers is a lot more significant than some screw-balls here or there citing Avatar as the basis of their new religion or whatever. I'm not arguing that this movie will or won't have a Star Wars-type impact on the world, but I agree with SideshowDusty that it's certainly too soon to know, and I'm not sure that some wacked out Palestinian activists means much.

I think it means a lot. Avatardation has become worldwide. Also, Twilight is a cultural phenomenon as well. I don't really see what the confusion is.

Its just a group of crazies dressed up like cat people. So what? That doesn't mean it has had a massive cultural impact. For me, it takes more than a handful of examples of crazies to exemplify that.

Obviously it's not just the Palestinian protesters...like I said, the jokes, spoofs, the fact that everyone knows what Avatar is. The crazies are a part of that unfortunately...

and you will see a lot of them dressed as blue Na'vi at SDCC this year. I simply don't even see how this is a debate. Avatar has had a cultural impact...

He's not nuts, it's just his opinion. Everyone likes different things. I probably will never see The Hurt Locker because I'm not interested at all in war flicks, especially newer ones.

Thank you, Ween.

To both of you, my post was not just in reference to the Hurt Locker, but Inglourious Basterds and Moon as well. Those two were also amazing films and for him to say that they were "Lame" and "Boring" really makes me question his taste.

If me disliking those two movies makes you question my taste, I dare not tell you other things about me, lest you really just write me off all together. I cannot abide most Quentin Tarantino movies, and Inglorious Basterds was no exception. Moon didn't have enough of a plot to keep me interested. It all took place with one character, in one building, and just didn't have anything interesting about it, in my opinion. It almost felt like a live action Wall-E, only I actually liked Wall-E.

Ween, you'd be very surprised at just how many 'Chick Flicks' I like. I love all different kinds of movies and genres (except musicals). :D

Oh, nevermind then, cause Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie. So there you have it: I have bad taste.

No offense, ill, I just didn't like your favorite movies of the year.

WTF! :lol GHEY!

It's true. :monkey3

Actually he drives onto the Moon at one point. :monkey3

And goes down stairs.
