The Sano piece is practically the real thing, so...

I agree ... the sideshow maquette and cinemquette are great stylized pose variants of the alien which is a great for a dynamic collection with other stylized posed related statues. the Sano one is def a more museum showcase piece and as accurate as one can get.

Ordered this one a while back. No regrets. Will looks great with my Alien collection.

Both the Sano and the Sideshow Big Chap are model versions of a plastic costume, itself a rendition of a two-dimensional drawing; that's as real as it gets.

Roswell are a very small company - they charge a lot because they have to, not because they necessarily produce better models. As a fan of the original movie (not the art), if the Sideshow Big Chap is half as good as the Warrior Maquette, I'll be very happy.

Both points are valid, both are based on the same costume. and it does come down to preference and money at the end of the day. both are really great sculpts but the sano one is just better, individually hand sculpted and painted by the sculptor thus you are getting top quality where sideshow they make one amazingly beautifully painted statue prototype, where tons of detail is made perfectly then they send it too china, to be manufactured and painted on a production line in a factory. If sideshow had to do the same thing as roswell guaranteed the price would be close or even more.

don't get me wrong I am a huge sideshow fan of their alien line have most of it in my collection but when it comes down to pure quality the sano statue is the best and worth every penny. :)

Well, the Sideshow 1:1 Alien/Aliens busts are infinitely more collectible than Sano's recent (smaller and more expensive) versions and, as far as I know, were also painted in China.

I'm a huge fan of the Japanese attention to detail (been living here for over 20 years) but also know that there's a lot of stuff here that is very overpriced and which does not always reflect either quality or value - that's the Japanese way. But I digress....just don't like the Sano's emotionless pose so wouldn't have been tempted at even half the price.

I wouldn't necessarily say because something is painted by the sculptor that that is better. It depends on the sculptors painting ability.

I agree with you on the emotionless pose, i personally love it myself but that just me :). wont lie either the price is hellishly expensive but given this is my first buy from them and there 1/3 bust was just too SICK I figured that, that is what you pay for such a detailed statue like that, given you live there and have first hand experience with there prices its a shame that they are overpriced. means a lot of die hard aliens fans wont be able to get such a great statue to add to there collection including the sideshow big chap.

Yep, there's nothing wrong with liking both.

They both have their good points and bad points.

It all comes down to personal preference, and there's no reason anyone should say that anyone else is wrong for buying or not buying either one of these.

I get the impression some fans feel that accuracy equals better and nobody can dispute that. "Looking good" (including pose) seems to come in second place to pedigree/accuracy. That's a narrow minded way to look at the hobby.

Ultimately we all choose what's "better" in our collections.

@Bullseye your signature is distracting me. It should be against the board's rules.

The Sano is an amazing museum style and apparently quality piece, but a very static museum pose. The Sideshow piece seems to be eliciting Count Orlok as he may have been skulking around the Carpathian Mountains, and is quite creepy.

Fixed. :lol

I have to disagree with you about the narrow mindedness on this one, don't we all collect statues and figurines that depict our favorite characters in movies to the best that they can be closely created to the accuracy of the real thing. granted we choose whats better for our own collection. which is why its our own collection. I myself have many figurines and statues that depicted characters to the best they can be recreated and ones that are far from it. for example if you visit Sabres album collection he has many different stylized aliens which is freaken SICK and the sideshow big chap and sano art statue are just more additions to such a collection, personally I think the sano one is the most accurate alien statue to date and why cant we as long time collectors finally have such a accurate alien ... :lecture

the sideshow statue is in no doubt the 2nd best alien statue to date, its one hell of a great alien statue which myself will have in my collection one day ...

Uhm, I love the Alien I saw in the movie, so I want whatever is closest to it. And since the Sano one is probably the most accurate Alien statue ever made..uhh... Isn't there also an Alien suit in some museum posed exactly like it?
The Alien was known for unnatural, static poses..and while the SS pose is static, it comes out looking a bit ridiculous..(although I have grown to like it more and more each month).

The Sano one just screams Alien more than any other Alien collectible I've seen.

Just to clarify -- it's not Sano's pose -- it's Giger's -- this is a replica of H.R. Giger's original Alien Sculpt that's on display in the Swiss museum and in Giger's house....

The paint job of the "Special Edition" is an original design of Sano, not the sculpt. That said, I also like the dynamic pose of my Cinemaquette (like when the Alien turned from Lambert to Parker), but in the Roswell piece, the focus is on the details that comprise of the biomechanoid, so a static sculpt is lends itself well to showing off the design. I would definitely say emotionless, but I don't mind considering the creature itself is cold.

And as much as I've collected a lot of the Alien statues out there - I lean toward the ones with the greatest fidelity to the design because they are few and far between...it's a difficult design to replicate...even the Neca head is way off, the Hot Toys just doesn't have the rhythm of it (I"m sure they could do better now that accuracy is what they strive for), Giger actually gave the Kenner props for really capturing the essence of it, along with the right proportions for the most part....

Looking at the Sano piece I feel like I'm looking at his other sculptures especially when its in the black color scheme...But I do love the SS maquette even with the very unalien-like hand pose -- the rest of it is beautifully rendered so it's a win for me...
