I will readily admit that I can be a large hypocrite sometimes

I'm even weakening a bit on MP11 as I'd like a Starscream that stands out a bit more than the iGear one in robot mode....the grey that Takara used is the closest to the G1 toy yet and I like the idea of the Decepticon Air Commander looking slightly different to his grunts.

Yeah, it's quite nice.

I was debating between the two for a while before I decided on MP-11. I think it was the new headsculpt that really sealed the deal for me.

I didn't like the spiky bits below his wings in 'bot mode at first, but after watching a few G1 episodes it seems that's actually show accurate.

One thing I won't change my mind on is MP10 as an alternative Prime or replacement for Faith Leader.

Ultra Magnus will be considered if the armor is good enough to cover up the ugliness of the mold underneath.

Yeah, I could see myself picking up MP-10 for a good deal. I don't think it's "ugly" per se, but I do prefer the sleek, cartoon-accurate Faith Leader, plus I like that Grimlock is taller than him, too.

MP-10 looks like a fun toy, though. We'll see.

I'm also not a fan of the plastic cape but that can stay in the box so it's not a deal breaker.

At the time it was announced I was already set on getting the iGear one as it was cheaper and also because I was pissed off that Takara were rehashing characters that had already been done....they've made up for that now

MP10's aesthetic reminds me of how they gave Prime a six pack for the last film to make him look more "heroic" or even some of the recent IDW art where the artists tried to combine G1 and Bayformers styling into the same robot

That's a WAY better gimmick something like a pointless light up feature that can't be kept in the "on" position....Takara are learning.

I also like that the tapes all fit in the actual torso as opposed to having a chest area like some of the G1 Soundwave reissues.

Those retools made it look like he had a tape strapped to his chest as opposed to 2 in his chest

Everyone's looking too "comic-book" these days.

People ooh and ahh over the 25th style GI Joes, for example, and call the old ones "crap" now. Don't get me wrong, I like the new style too, but all the faces look the same (like some... maybe most comic book artists) and have these "hero" physiques with tiny heads. The proportions on the old ones were more normal ("big" heads and all) and the facesculpts, while maybe not as sharp, were based on real people and had PERSONALITY and unique features!

But I digress. This is a TF thread, after all.

Point is, I find that I'm kind of digging MP-10 the more I look at it, not to mention people's reviews. But no one seems to be actually making the claim that it's a more ACCURATE depiction of G1 Prime (alt mode aside). Because it's not.

Instead they use "update" which I suppose is correct, but that word doesn't automatically mean "better". At least not in terms of accuracy, which to me is pretty important.

In the end, I suspect I'll have a place for both Faith Leader and MP-10 though. I still have my 20th Anniversary Prime with custom stacks, even though he doesn't really fit with any of my other TFs. He does, however, look great in a retro '80s display with MOTUC He-Man, TMNT, etc.

I could see getting the Hasbro MP-10 version to display along with MP Rodimus, should I ever decide to pull the trigger on that one, too.

Whenever an old TV series gets revived or a classic movie gets remade 99% of them tend to suck because the people involved with the new versions haven't a clue why the originals worked and are so eager to put their own stamp on things they often change stuff just for the sake of doing so.

I think the same happens with Transformers, you only have to look at Bayformers, Prime or Animated to see how bad things can get when the people running the franchise try and do something different.

Whether it's pure nostalgia or whatever, the G1 designs are still just as loved as they were 30 years ago and Takara have finally realised it's "ultimate" versions of those characters that people are after over anything else and they're even willing to pay out for licenses to get the authentic alt modes.

The newer version of Masterpiece Prime isn't my cup of tea but does still look like G1 Prime, albeit a different interpretation as opposed to cartoon accurate.

Had the "update" been an attempt to retcon G1 Prime into having a Bayformers style Peterbilt truck mode it would have been a lot worse and likewise for Starscream V2 had it turned into an F-22.

Whilst reading the Masterpiece speculation thread at TFW2005 I've seen suggestions that Takara should change the alt modes for the series 1 characters that they probably won't be able to get the licenses for but now Takara have set a precedent with deals with Lamborghini and Nissan I think it's more likely they'll just not make them unless they base the alt modes on the animation models as there's probably enough differences to avoid a lawsuit.
