Re: Aragorn PF!!!

i don't have a problem with the hair color, more how the hair is styled.

okay...i will now stop talking about hair. Feels weird.

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

Damn, just realized I'm going to be on a plane when newsletter is released next week. Hope I don't miss any very limited exclusives, like an Ex Aragorn PF. Fug.

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

Ok, I start to get sad to sell my Lurtz exclusive now.

After Frodo and my disappointment with Gandalf (even Frodo is better than Gandalf imo) plus taking into account how slow the LOTR PF line is going, I had decided to create some space at home and sold Lurtz.

I might need to buy another Lurtz if Aragorn will turn out to be as good as he looks in the preview pic

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

I swore I was not going to buy anymore statues.......but this one looks like it could be the best so far out of the LOTR PFs....or alteast equal to the awesomeness of Lurtz.......I may have to rethink my collecting/buying strategy. :cuss :lol

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

I'm not getting the criticism on the hair I don't think it looks black at all its dark brown like its supposed to be, there is a lot of shadow in this photo so its hard to tell but pure black hair would have that blueish hue off it that this doesn't have, its dark brown which looks darker if one is sweating, and I know Aragorn was cool etc etc but wouldn't you have been sweating looking at those Uruks coming up the hill at Amon Hen in droves, personally I'd have gone bald there and then!! :rotfl

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

I think the hair does look too dark, but I get the impression that Sideshow paintjobs often make the hair a bit darker than it should be.

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

ok, this is looking great!. The clothing should be excellent at this scale... but that sculpt... damn. I love the 1/6 Aragorn (after a repaint) but this just IS Viggo.

Well done Sir Andy :bow :bow :bow

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

Some?...Try most. Certainly SS has had some of the same issue's, but overall the likenesses with SS have been better.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree again - GtG, Saruman, Grima, Sam, Boromir, Gimli... do I need to go on - they were all fine to me so I stick with my original comment that some of them were off :)

The shafting comment relates to Weta bailing out of the LOTR licence. Many of us who had been there from the beginning, and had waited patiently for years to see some of our favorite characters [faramir, eomer, mouth of sauron on steed , etc...suddenly realized it wasn't going to happen when Weta dropped that bomb on us.

Well okay if thats what you meant but it didn't read anything like that. I was there from the beginning too - preordered the Balrog and CT direct from SS, to name but a few, and whilst I was unhappy not to get certain pieces I wouldn't say that I ever felt "shafted". I don't know anything like enough to be able to call it - maybe they couldn't renew the licence - like I said, I don't know

are they the same ones that also gave us the legolas that doesn't look like legolas, the aragorn that doesn't look like aragorn, etc...not to mention the dreaded eomer bust? :rotfl Like I have said before, Weta did a great job when it came to sculpting creatures. When it came to humans, elves, etc...not so much.

Well I don't collect the busts so can't directly comment (although I agree the pics look awful in some cases), but as I said above this does not equate to most being off, just some. You've listed three bad ones - the GtW bust I have seen in the flesh and its one of the best likenesses I've seen, certainly better than the photos of the SS PF, so again, we'll agree to disagree - I think some, you think most. Furthermore, I couldn't hold a candle to their sculpting talents - if you're better then feel free to slag them off, but I wouldn't even begin to - I may not like something and I'll say so if thats the case, but I wouldn't dream of belittling their far superior talent.

You'll have to ask the lobodomized Weta loyalists that question. I've always said both SS and Weta have done some great things, as well as some pretty bad ones. Unfortunately, no matter what SS does there will always be some Weta drones spewing their "Weta is better" mantra. As if somehow the quality of Weta's product is better than SS's. Of course this is an utterly ridiculous statement, and certainly not based on anything factual, but don't try and confuse them with things like facts.

And yet, to be honest, you're coming across as a SS loyalist, slagging off Weta - again thats how I see it so I apologise if thats not what you intend. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by your last statement?? As I said in my previous post they're both very good at what they do, or have done. Both have produced outstanding pieces, both poor ones - c'est la vie :)

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

Ive never been a fan of cloth used on PF formats so I wont bother commenting on that, much preferring fully sculpted statues.

But that head sculpt is flawless imo, and i think, the best likeness out there.

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

Not to be difficult or anything, but staring at the preview image I'm at a complete loss as to what you mean by the clothing looks cheap. Could you elaborate so I could better understand?

I get a sense (from looking at the possible feel of the texture from the blue shirt) that when when you see it in person it will come across a little bit too stiff/clean and makes it feel very doll like.

I guess the best way I can illustrate it is by pointing out the Frodo PF. It's a little too stiff when it comes to clothing. I know it's 2 different outfits but I am speaking just in terms of "feel" of how it looks. Not "roughed authentic" or "medieval" enough. I just hope Aragorn has more of that Lurtz PF effect and not Frodo PF effect in terms of clothes.

The hair on my helm's deep aragorn is definitely dark brown, so hopefully it's just the lighting in the preview that appears to make his hair darker.

You don't really think SS would have decided to make his hair blackish looking to simulate him sweating do you....somehow or don't think SS or anyone else for that matter would put that kind of detail into a statue :lol

Re: Aragorn PF!!!

I have yet to take the plunge on any SS premium format figures, sticking primarily to the 1:6 figures because the premium formats are just way out of my league being a grad student. I've reserved a few before, but always had to cancel due to funds.

However, I'm with several other people on here and I have to say that this may be the one that I can't resisst picking up - this piece looks amazing! I've been waiting to see Aragorn arrive in premium format and now that he's here, he doesn't disappoint at all. Excellent work Sideshow!

I have no idea how I can pull off the funds for this one, but I've got to try and come up with something.

What a week for LOTR fans!

....I've only listed 3 bad one's because I don't want to waste 20 min. on one posting. As for the GTW bust you are absolutely right...it is far superior to SS's PF and I would say it is the best likeness I've ever seen from Weta or SS.

....I never said I was a sculptor or had more talent, but I would say that overall Weta's sculptors are not as good as the one's SS is currently employing. Being able to hire the like's of Andy, Trevor, Steve West, and the Canale Group certainly gives SS a big advantage.

And yet, to be honest, you're coming across as a SS loyalist, slagging off Weta - again thats how I see it so I apologise if thats not what you intend. ...if you've ever read some of my postings you'ld know I'm not loyal to SS, Weta, or any other company. I've praised and bashed both SS and Weta over the years. The only thing I am interested in is top-notch quality and I don't care where it comes from. Unfortunately, no matter what SS does there are always some Weta parrots out there crying "Weta is better, Weta is better". As if somehow because Weta made it first, it must be better. What a joke! SS is probably using the same Chinese sweatshop to produce and paint their statues/busts that SS/Weta used, so to say SS's quality is lacking is ridiculous. Not only that, because SS's stable of sculptors is better than Weta's I would say the quality of SS's LOTR products not only equals Weta's but surpasses it.
