Hmmm, so what's the problem - poor art direction? Lack of talent on the sculptor's part? How can Asmus get on the right track here?

Hard to say. As much as I like to see new figures come out, it might be good if they slowed down a little. I absolutely love that they go after obscure characters - Mouth of Sauron, Thranduil, Grishnakh. It implies they have a real passion for the source material and perhaps certain of the film designs. But, honestly, take the time and resources to really nail the major players with care, smart materials and talented artists first. After that, I think collectors will stick like glue because we're passionate about it too. I would at least. If they'd led with a perfect Frodo and Gandalf, and kept up the quality, I'd sell all kinds of stuff to make room for the rest.

Also, if it ain't broke, don't ****ing tweak it. That's pretty much an art director's only job - get it there and then leave it alone. I know because I am one.

Yeah, they are blowing it with some main characters. GtG was just ok. Original sculpt looked better. Arogorn never really came close except with a major overhaul of the hair sculpt and now these...

The major futzing is ok and can be fun but once you start having to consider complete replacements of different portions of the sculpt or the sculpt entirely, it's gets harder and harder to support the line when the main characters need so much aftermarket work.

3Zero's GoT line suffers from the same problem. I probably have as much invested in the aftermarket work on my Jon Snow as I have in their last two figures combined.

I'm feeling pretty bummed out about these sculpts. These should be home runs. Really disappointed. Only reason I'm keeping my order is hope for some custom artists giving us real sculpts of Frodo and Sam. Really crazy how we have some absolutely amazing Orcs but sub par hero sculpts. SMH...

Well, I know my opinion is not a popular one but my frodo and same arrived today and I'm really happy with them. I know that the head sculpts aren't perfect (with Sam being way off) but I'm still happy and can easily tell who the characters are. All geared up they look so good, the accessories and outfits are fantastic and to me frodo is pretty good. They aren't perfect but they match the other releases and I'm happy. They're better in hand than in reviews etc

I totally agree having received them today and spending some time setting them up. They are an improvement on Merry and Pip and the accessories are as good as any other figure I own.

I am more forgiving than a lot of collectors, and even though the head sculpts are off they are still great little figures, and the whole fellowship is going to look great together. I think there are a lot of people in these threads that need to find a new hobby lol.

Perhaps most people expect better quality when plunking down this kind of money. Might not be a realistic expectation with Asmus, that is a tough pill to swallow.

It's true, we collectors are a critical and demanding bunch. We expect the people who make our collectibles to be just as passionate, just as dedicated and just as obsessive about these movies and characters as we are. And yes, that may be an unrealistic expectation to heap on a company, but I feel like Asmus really does care a lot about this property. It's just that, for me, the inconsistency has been really frustrating.

I'm still all-in on anything Middle Earth. And I will keep buying. But I am frustrated.

I've long been a big cheerleader for this line and for Asmus in general. And I'm pretty quick to forgive minor stuff. But it's hard sometimes because we've seen them really knock some figures out of the park ... Saruman, Gandalf the Grey, Bard, Grishnak, Mouth of Sauron, etc. ... and just when you think they're getting rolling, they release a figure or two with flaws that should have been fixed early in the process.

It almost seems like they've got different art directors and teams working on different figures ... and those art directors and teams aren't working with the same set of quality standards.

As nothing more than an end user I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of the collectibles business. I don't know anything about production schedules or budgets or the realities of what it takes to bring a figure to market. But those sculpts should have been flagged early. I know Asmus is working very hard to keep the prices down ... but I, for one, would gladly pay a few dollars more if it would mean we would get consistently higher quality portraits.

Accessories are nice, but the cornerstone ... the foundation ... the most important element of any figure ... is the sculpt. Then the paint job. Nail those two and I'll be a very happy collector.

Like I said, I'm still buying these guys. But I just wish Asmus could get on a roll.

I'm actually one of the most forgiving collectors you'll meet. I'm guilty of defending and actually accepted the HT DX05 Indy sculpt back in the day. I don't need to find a new hobby. Unfortunately with these you can see that Asmus rushed them just to get them out the door. Frodo *may* be acceptable at certain angles or light but that Sam is absolute trash. Sorry. Not sorry. These characters deserve better.

I've always treated these Asmus LotR figures as pricey kits needing much work to bring up to museum quality. I wish the sculpts were better but I say that with every one of their releases, even Saurman which got a much better reception.

I don't think Frodo is too far off and he looks pretty much like this picture:

Frodo.jpg

That isn't the look I would have chose for Frodo, but it does look pretty similar.

For Sam I don't think his face it too bad, I think it is more that his cheeks are too wide and rounded in the back and under the chin. Looking at his sculpt it is almost like there is an extra band of plastic that doesn't belong. If that was removed, I think he would look much better. Not sure if that is a sculpt issue or something to do with the way the molds were made.

I think the look of Sam and frodo fit perfectly with the other fellowship releases. Frodo looks pretty darn great to me and Sam is off but I can still see him there. If asmus could have or would have released these with perfect 100% likenesses I don't think they would have blended well with the other releases. I'm totally happy with Sam and frodo and am eagerly anticipating legolas, gimli, and boromir.

I'm happy with both, yes the sculpts could be more accurate but whats there is done well imo and if there's one thing I've learned collecting that is there's always an updated version around the corner.

Great photos! Thanks for sharing.

The thing with opinions is everyone has them and everyone is entitled to them. I have no problem with people being vocal about liking or disliking figures on these forums. Personally I feel like people should be allowed to share their view, whether I agree or disagree with it. All I care about is if people are somewhat civil in their responses (even the agreement of civility differs from one to another).

I find it odd when others are basically saying people can't have an opinion that differes from theirs. Just because others are happy with the end product doesn't mean I have to be. In saying that, I'm glad to hear some people are happy with their figures. That's what it's all about 😊

I'm still hoping for some new head sculpts before I buy these.

Totally with you.
I was also supportive of Asmus with both Gandalf releases, but have less faith now. I was really expecting these two, but likeness is a priority to me. GtG is not perfect, but much closer to what we have expected. And both of these are not good. Yes, one could recognize that that is a Frodo figure, and if someone sees only Sam'a headsculpt they may guess who it is supposed to be.
What I like about Hot Toys or Blitzway, is that even people who know nothing about 1/6 collectibles are impressed right away and could guess not only the character represented but the actor. So that's what I expect from Asmus' products.
