Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

i've watched some vids on smooth-on.com and i'm just wondering...if your casting something, is it really necessary to glue it to a surface before you pore your silicone mix on it?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Well....I found a way of painting flesh that works for me....I'm happy with the outcome, and i'm ready for tomorrow! C'mon Spy Seven!

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Here is what I do Celtic...

I use Model Master Acrylic paints, and for skin there are 3 main colors to use ( for caucasian skin tones).. Skin Tone Warm, Skin Tone Base, and Burnt Sienna.

For my base coat I mix up the Warm and the Base until I have a shade I like, I water down the paint a bit so it's not thick. You don't want thick paint because your brush strokes will show and you lose sculpt detail.

I brush that on, usually it takes a few layers to coat the skin fully.

For the details in the creases, under the eyes, over the eyes, and sculpted creases and so on... I mix up Warm skin tone with Burnt Sienna and water that down a LOT.. you want it to be able to rub right off. This helps it to look more subtle and less like a painted line. I use a thin tipped brush and keep my brush moderately dry.. brush it into the creases, in the ears and temples... and blend the edges with my fingers.

And that's the skin. After that I usually do hair, followed by lips and under the eyelids.. and finally the eyes. :rock

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

I'll use that!

Heres my attempt....the close up obviously looks worse...you dont see that detail with the naked eye.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

about the casting thing again, for the two part mold, do i have to use clay?
if i do, are there any substitutes that i could look for?

Yes, or the silicone will get under the head and move the piece within the mold.

how do you get the original head off after the casting if it's glued down?
and what about for something flat, like the batarang?
As far as I know you have to use clay. I dont know of any substitutes to that.:huh
damn, i'm allergic to clay!:banghead

I like to use the glue from a hot glue gun. It simply pops right off. Do not use permanent type of epoxies.

For something that thin and flat, I would glue it on its tip standing up not on its side and do it as a one piece mold. The challenge would be the casting. Maybe use a cyringe? The type you use to feed babys their medicine.

Damn! Sorry to here about that, What if you use latex gloves?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

what are you allergic to w clay ??? There are many diff kinds of clay, is the oil or sulpher you are allergic to ??

i usually do use gloves with a mask, and my reactions are not as bad.
it's really all about the inhalation.

i honestly have no clue, all i know is that when i am around clay, if i touch it or inhale it, i get a reaction. i used to do a tennis league on clay courts, and a day later i would be sick, and last year i tried to make a sculpture, and i lost my voice for a few weeks. the sad thing is that i love to sculpt.

one more question...which type of smooth-on is best for a two piece cast, and which is best for a one piece cast?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Have you tried sculpey instead of real clay?

not yet, but i will.
would the sculpey work for the two part mold as well as the clay would?

and once again, which type of smooth-on is best for both a one part and a two part mold?
