I know I’m going to get dumped on but I don’t care …

Cameron: what’s it like to take a boring book and make it amaze balls

Are you implying that Dune is a boring book? Dune is a science fiction masterwork for a reason. Boring?!!! Put your hand in the Box right now, sonny. We'll see just how human you are.

(kidding. Kind of.)

What happened to the almost $200 million weekend box office?

Was not impressive- next two weeks will be make or break. Local theatre here was weak in attendance,
Jim c will not be happy about these returns

Boggles my mind that a movie that made 450-550 million opening weekend, and is the second highest opening weekend this year, is being talked about like it flopped.

Give it a week or two see how it does over Christmas.

The first Avatar didn't pick up steam until after opening weekend and word of mouth kicked in and got everyone to go.

Second viewing, this time in HFR.

Absolutely jaw dropping. And without the slightest eye strain. If you're only going to watch this one time on the big screen this IS the way to watch it. The immersion was truly off the charts.

And the film overall truly is the real deal. Superior to the original in every way. As one reviewer headline said "epic yet intimate." I can't believe Cameron not only added the dreaded "kid factor" to this movie but included like half a dozen of them...and they were all likable! I realized this time around that every single moment building up to the finale, whether it be characters learning something, suffering some ordeal, building certain bonds...pretty much every major moment (and several seemingly minor that you could easily forget about) has a satisfying payoff.

You really go on a journey with this family and I was rooting for them every step of the way.

Man Neytiri goes through silent hell in this movie and she is so freaking cool! Everything that she loved about Jake in the first film she pretty much has to watch get stripped away before her eyes. Instead of him being crowned Toruk Makto she has to watch his rank being stripped from him. Instead of everyone putting their hands on him and making him part of the tribe she watches (and shares) his exile. Instead of standing by his side while he makes an impassioned speech to the crushed Na'vi and inspires them to fight she has to watch him give an impassioned speech to Na'vi who are ready to fight about how he thinks they should stand down. And when she finally hits her breaking point...holyyyy crap, lol. Full extended RO Vader mode and it is both glorious and terrifying. :)

Quaritch is a legit awesome character this time around and constantly straddles the line between dastardly, respectable, and sympathetic. Interesting how he has a similar experience as Boba Fett ("dying" and then being reborn) but without all the idiocy and buffoonery.

The HFR battles, holy crap, just holy crap. HFR glistening Neytiri bod...dayum, lol.

The year started out with me commending The Batman for being arguably the best film I'd seen in 20 years. And now I think I have to rank it third of this one single year alone! :thud:

I don't think my review will sway anyone's opinion one way or the other, and this film could just be one long series of Cameron ticking off all the boxes that I've always loved in his films, but regardless yeah this one blew me away.

Yeah Cameron films have never really been the types to earn most of their money on opening weekend.

That's high praise and sound like you may be going back to make 9 hours worth of total immersion on this.
You know me so well, lol.

I may have to check it out now.
I truly hope you enjoy it and that I don't end up being responsible for you being miserable for three hours...

My girlfriend's husband buys the groceries, so I don't know what things cost anymore.

Here is where Avatar 2 can get potentially interesting. Investors might not believe in Avatar 3, but they will believe in a sequel to Aliens and a sequel to Terminator. I'm talking actual James Cameron productions top to bottom. It would essentially be a license to print money. I mean how many of you would rush to the theaters if Hicks, Newt and Ripley were still alive and Alien 3 forward all were flushed from canon?

When Eddie Murphy needed a hit, he went back to Beverly Hills Cop 3. When Will Smith lost his luster, he did another Bad Boys movie and another Men In Black movie. Even Harrison Ford saddled back up for Han Solo and Indy because he had a long string of bombs.

How bad does Cameron want Avatar 3? Enough to make Terminator 3 and Alien 3 on his terms in exchange for the financing for his passion project?
I think I read somewhere that Avatar 3 has already been filmed.
Hopefully a lot of the foundation costs went into Avatar 2, and things can be reused for 3, 4 and 5, so there's less pressure for each to make $2 billion.

It's not that it's a flop, it's that supposedly (I've heard mixed reports on this) it needs to make $2 billion to break even. It's a lot of pressure for a movie the general audience rates lower than No Way Home or Top Gun Maverick, and neither made $2 billion. Avatar does have the higher ticket pricing for being 3D as an advantage.
I do hope it does well as a I liked it.

I barely even go to the cinema anymore, last film was Thor Love and Thunder in August. I will be going to see this though, once Christmas is over.

Once my wife is covid free we are absolutely going to the HFR showing. :yess:

Yeah I don’t know where people are getting the impression that they this movie is bombing it has no competition until February or March which is crazy in itself and the only thing holding it back are the premium screens which we discussed already and it already made what Black Adam made in his entire run and it made what Morbius made in 15 minutes lol

Cameron likes Christmas releases because all he competes with are usually Oscar releases. Wasn't Titanic and Avatar both released around the Holidays? I hear neither of those did too poorly at the box office.

Yup ... as was The Force Awakens.
Of the five films that have a global gross of over $2 billion, three were (originally) released in mid-December.

Yes! :yess: Dude the HFR 3D is absolutely insane. :rock

"In Marvel movies there are epic things that are happening like cities being destroyed but the films themselves never actually feel epic." Damn...lol.

He's pretty much right though.
Waaah. Why do they have to all feel epic? I love the small stakes of Ant-man or She-Hulk. And IW and EG are epic, truly, they built to that. The portals moment is so earned, JC needs to eat some.

I don't think he was referring to Ant-Man or She-Hulk since those didn't have cities being destroyed. It sounded like he was talking about movies that should have felt epic but didn't. I agree that IW definitely was from beginning to end and EG was from the portals onward. The Russo brothers just can't catch a break from their hero, lol.
