Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

I think the Russo bros and Feige are trying to retcon AOU because Vision was the first to lift the hammer in a movie that had a scene debating who was worthy. They're trying their best to take away or diminish that Vision scene. Not that it's a great scene.

Come monday EG will be around 140-177 million behind Avatar.

Damn can you imagine if it stops like 30-50 million behind Avatar.

Whedon himself hinted at Cap being worthy just after AoU released (I posted an interview of him at SDCC a while back here) so it's less of a retcon and more of a confirmation IMO.

As of yesterday Endgame has been in theatres for 20 days. Avatar was in theatres (domestic 1st run) for 234 days. I think Endgame has a decent shot of reaching #1 if it sticks around past SFFH's opening on July 2nd, which should give it an attendance boost similar to what Endgame did for CM.

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

It’s the competition and run time that’s hurting the momentum but at least memorial weekend everyone is off.

Wasn’t the first movie about to beat avatar?

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

Sorry i’m drunk and fantasizing about my armored EG Thanos and IX Rose Tico display options.

If EG doesn’t beat Avatar nothing ever will that is until movies are $35 a ticket then even a DC movie will beat Avatar lol

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

I've only seen Endgame twice.

The second time was I able to - not set aside the things I dislike, completely - but just take in the movie in its entirety and catch everything. I enjoyed it more the second time, even though the major things I disliked - Thor/lack of Loki, Falcon Cap and the general waste of Bucky and Steve/Bucky's relationship (central to ALL 3 of Cap's films), and the writing/handling of Hulk/lack of payoff for Hulk, are still there and aren't going anywhere. My mind wasn't changed on any of that, though I suppose a potential Thor 4 might mitigate some of my issues with the lack of a good "culmination arc" for Thor.

Setting aside those things, I genuinely enjoy much of the rest of the movie. We're plan on seeing it a 3rd time this weekend, and that will be it for me.

I like the idea of Cap being worthy in AOU. I never much cared for some of the spec I've seen that he was only worthy post CW cause of Tony's parents and Bucky.

Agree on all points. IMO the agenda pushing or using these films as commercials (like IMO Cap and BP relationship, apparently) for the upcoming MCU, or even the Russos or writers just letting their hair down (Hulk) IMO affected the natural arcs of characters to an irritating degree. There's stuff I really like, like Antman rising to the fore; other stuff that is SO fan service and not in a good way (for me the Tony Howard thing was way overkill and undermined that nice film moment in IM2); and stuff like the Return that chokes me up.

At least I got a bit of the grittiness I was looking for and stellar performances. Was toying with seeing it again - I dunno. Maybe 3 times is enough for me at least until the BR comes out.

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

I was just thinking about the backlash to Rian Johnson and now apparently GoT guy's constant reliance on the "subverting of fan expectations" to tell a story, regardless of whether the end result provides a satisfying payoff or not.

Because Cap wielding Mjolnir in AEG is the perfect textbook example of how to properly catch the audience off guard while still delivering the ultimate crowd pleasing moment. How many years prior to Ragnarok had we been speculating, wondering and hoping that Cap might wield the hammer once the Infinity Saga came to a head. We even wondered if the AOU party scene was subtle foreshadowing. Cap using the hammer along with his death were two unknown but more than halfway expected elements we were all waiting for.

But Hela destroying the hammer changed all that. And Thor reforging a brand new weapon *really* changed all that. Mjolnir seemed gone for good, or at least for the foreseeable future. But then in AEG so much was happening and there was so much to take in during that first viewing that when Thor plucked the hammer out of 2013 it didn't even occur to me what they might be setting up for in the main battle.

It was only when it bounced off Thanos' head that I started to realize what was about to happen and when that freaking hammer stopped in midair and started to reverse I can without reservation say that it was the single most celebratory moment in cinema history for me outside of Han Solo flying out of the sun to save Luke. They ****ing did it, they did what I (or we) always hoped they'd do, and they somehow made it a ****ing surprise!!! :thud:

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

Yup enough with the subverting expectations narrative because even when not subverting expectations it can still be done intelligently and thrilling!

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

You know what’s crazy is that Cap lifting Thors hammer is just as impactful for Thor as it is for Cap and us the audience it’s crazy that Thor went from living in the full glory of cosmic Asgard to full blown annihilation to finally feeling great again watching Asgard’s glory being honored and fulfilled by Cap bringing everyone together.

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

Yes ... Thor is basically speaking for the audience in that scene. And as a reward for his jubilation at that moment, Thanos smashes him in the face. :lol
