'Coz it's better click bait for a relatively boring subject (profit/loss) than to struggle w. the crystal ball that is potential movie profits or do work like accurate reporting.
(I can't do the equation unless I have all the variables)
Like factoring in BR/DVD/streaming profits, general BO rise/fall, pirating, increased home viewing, licensing deals, targeted audience, etc. (Tho to a studio non-BO profit is another golden goose). Plus a lot of folks have an attention span of 20 seconds on the 'net.
So the media have turned BO into a spectator sport complete w. catchy titles. And to "win" you have to keep making more and more money at the BO. Except I don't remember ever seeing a headline screaming about disk profits etc. Because by then a film has left theaters and nobody cares. But that's all part of film success now too.
Some BO flops have made enough in the home view market to be technically considered successes, but few report that e.g.
