Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Haven't been following the news too closely. Any idea what storyline this might be based on?
I'd go for something that involved the Killing Joke events. Start with Barbara being Batgirl nad end with her in a wheelchair. Would make for some powerful drama. And I'd pick Jessica Chastain for the role.
But since this is Whedon, powerful drama is out of the question... :lol

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

This thread...disturbs me. I won't comment on the reasons why but it does tell me that our country has a LONG way to go. Sad.

Anywho, I'm very excited about Whedon doing this. I love Buffy, Avengers, Angel, Astonishing X-men, etc. everything he's ever done so there is no downside to this news. I find it strange that everyone wants a Batgirl so young though. Given Batman's age and experience in this world, Batgirl needs to be at LEAST 30-35. I think Emma Stone is completely wrong and have no idea why she's being brought up. I don't want Bat waif, I want Batgirl and that's ignoring the fact that she still appears too young, waif or not. I don't know who Jane Levy is. Can someone tell me what she's done. This frontrunner from the 100 is very pretty and looks the part to me but...can she act?

I trust Joss's instincts implicitly. If there is one thing he's amazing at(other than writing), it's casting so I think whomever he picks will probably be good.

Oh and kudos to those who brought up that new Pink Ranger. That's not a bad idea. By the why, she's not WHITE. She's mixed.

I think she did an admirable job in the film despite it not being that great.

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

I'm not really getting the praise for how progressive Power Rangers was in diversity. The cast was more or less just as diverse 20 years ago and back then they did it in a way that felt a lot more natural than the "we have to check all the boxes or else we are racist!" mentality of today.

But no, instead they had to switch everyone's race and personality until they didn't resemble their original character in the slightest, because apparently a black man wearing black clothing is prejudiced.....some how. Never mind the fact that everyone was a great role model back then and are pretty much all a-holes now.

What I find disturbing is how people giving any sign of not completely and unquestioningly going along with current political Borg Collective group think is regarded with suspicion and they are assumed to be some of the worst things. If you're a liberal who'd prefer if Batman stayed white then you can't actually be a liberal. Racism is the only possible conclusion as to why you don't want a black Batman. Your views need to be expunged, your mind needs reconditioning. Resistance is futile. It is the inevitable outcome. However there is, apparently, some ways to go. That last part sounds very ominous, I'm disturbed by it.

^ I cant tell if youre kiddin or not :mwaha

In the event you are not or for those who may agree with you... Changing him for the sake of changing him or because you feel slighted he wasnt black and therefore he must be changed is racist. Not accepting him as he is, is prejudicial.

Why must characters be changed to suit one's agenda? Whats wrong with creating and OWNING a new character SMH.

While the end of your post might be a bit of your exaggeration I agree completely.

Everyone is in such a hurry to have something to complain about and is so hyperbolic today that we see the absolute worst in humanity in even the most mundane of insensitivities.
The fact that you want Batman to be white isn't simply a respect for tradition and faithfulness to the character that might arguably (and I'm stretching by using that word) be marginalizing to people that would like a top-tier level superhero to relate to. It means that you must be actively prejudicial to the African-American people.

Whats funny though is that while we put so much focus on outward appearance of race and people's sensitivities, we put absolutly no importance at all on being a decent human being. To go back to Power rangers again (I know, I'm a broken record), I just find it funny that people care so much about the fact that they have switched up people's races so they don't resemble their suit color, yet don't care at all about the fact that they have all gone from well adjusted teens into a bunch of jerks. Good behavior, being considerate to people, and smart decision making are all equally important as racial equality, but no one gives a crap about those today because the opposite is more entertaining.
Would you rather be your black ranger not wear a black super suit, or have him be a good role model for your kid?

I was serious but I think you may have taken this part wrong

That's not me speaking. That's the far left. Or the regular left. I'm not sure I can even tell anymore.

I don't know who Jane Levy is. Can someone tell me what she's done.

She's hawt
She has red hair
She looks like what Batgirl/Barbara would look like in real life

She was in the Evil Dead remake and Don't Breathe. For TV, she was in Shameless and Suburgatory.

I give a-dev another year or so of all this BS before he goes full 1488. :lol

Agree wholeheartedly though, as always. They'll just keep pushing and pushing until they even turn on each other, throwing around the racist card over the pettiest of things. Their loss. They're just going to destroy that word until it has no meaning by abusing it with hyperbole so much. Ironically, their race baiting and views make them the real bigots.

What a time to be alive. You think you live in a world that has progressed when in reality, it desperately wants to fall back to darker times just because everyone wants to be portrayed as a victim.

For me, personally, I just think it's funny that the ones who shout "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS SUCKS" from the rooftops are the ones who ***** and moan the most whenever **** changes that they don't like. Look: if we never see a black Batman, I can't say that I'll lose any sleep over it, but I will be the first one to point out that there are ways to make such a concept work and highlight some of the areas where it could have a positive effect. With that in mind, I'd like to take a moment to ask: why is it okay that nearly every, single Batman film has a Batman that kills, yet Martha Wayne could not, nor should not ever be portrayed as an African American, and thus, Bruce, as a black man?

I would argue that Batman's code of conduct within the context of comics, while there have been some exceptions, historically, is a more innate character trait than his race, and yet, we don't bat an eye when, time after time, films ignore that in favor of a more ruthless dark knight. We only recently saw some pushback with Affleck, but there was none to be found with Keaton, Kilmer, and Bale, when it comes to their disregard for human life. With that in mind, considering the countless reinventions Batman has had, I fail to see how his being African American or, really, any other race, for that matter, is a bridge too far.
