Is THE BATMAN Coming In 2018?

A rumor pits Batman against Captain Marvel.
By DEVIN FARACI Jun. 24, 2015

The weirdest thing about Warner Bros' announced slate of DC superhero movies: no solo Batman or Superman films. Considering those were the only two heroes the company could even remotely get right it's odd seeing them only slated for team-up films between now and the end of the decade.

We've heard rumors and stories that there are solo movies planned - the Batman one even has a name: The Batman - but nothing solid. We still have nothing solid, but Latino Review is reporting what they're hearing from inside WB's Batcave... that Batman will go solo again in 2018.

And not just any time in 2018. The site says that The Batman will open in November 2018, placing Batman square in the path of Captain Marvel. On a lot of levels that has to be a worst case scenario for Marvel - an untested character who is an absolute unknown to 99% of the world's ticket buying audience going up against one of the most famous and perenially popular characters in history.

It could be even worse. Latino Review says that Ben Affleck is to direct the film, which gives the movie an extra layer of star power. If Affleck is directing, Marvel really needs to get Angelina Jolie to direct Captain Marvel - only she can combat Affleck in the media! The site also reports that Chris Terrio is writing, but I have a feeling after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice* the bloom will be off that rose. Not that the script is bad, but all the Academy Awards in the world don't necessarily improve your dialogue or fix the structure and set pieces you inherited from the last guy.

Batman v Captain Marvel: Dawn of the Box Office is going to be an interesting battle, if this rumor proves true. Is there any way that Carol Danvers can hope to hold her own against a new version of Batman riding the wave of Justice League. I mean, I guess if Justice League sucks that helps, but otherwise... it's the goddamned Batman.

The Big Rumor: Chris Pine Is Actually Playing Green Lantern

That Steve Trevor casting was a fake-out, scoop claims.
By DEVIN FARACI Jun. 24, 2015

I have been trying to decide whether or not to run this story because, while I trust Latino Review, this sounds so out there and requires so much manipulation on Warner Bros' part that I have a hard time fully swallowing it. According to the site all that casting news about Chris Pine being Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman? A total smokescreen. In reality the actor is being romanced to play Hal Jordan in the upcoming Justice League and Green Lanterns.

A couple of things:

1) Pine is wrong for Hal Jordan. If WB is going to have multiple franchises going they shouldn't be afraid to make the heroes feel unique and not keep chasing that cocky playboy **** that Iron Man established. Hal Jordan is a military test pilot, a risk-taker for sure, but also a conservative and a bit of an authoritarian. Maybe Pine showed that side in Jack Ryan, but like most of the world I haven't seen that movie yet. To me casting him reads too much like going back to that Ryan Reynolds well - just too jokey, too loose.

2) If Pine is circling Wonder Woman but is playing Hal Jordan that must mean everything about that movie has changed with the director switch-over. That movie has always been conceived as a period piece, and Hal Jordan simply couldn't be Green Lantern in any of the time periods that have been pitched. I don't have a great understanding of contract law, but I assume that if Pine is in negotiations to be in that movie - and again, I really believe those stories, coming from the trades, are true - then he's going to be in that movie. And I don't know how Hal fits in. Bookends in the modern day?

3) I liked the idea of casting a well-known actor as the love interest. It felt right and empowering for Wonder Woman. Pulling out the rug from under that and having Pine be yet another hero is boring to me.

Like I said, I trust LR. This story is just so dependant on WB exercising powers of media manipulation that I have never seen them exercise that it feels far-fetched, like it's a crossed-wires kind of scenario. We'll know come Comic-Con.

A solo Batman movie in November? Weird. And even though Captain Marvel would obviously be crushed it would still bite into Batman's earnings a little bit. It really doesn't make sense for two superhero movies to open the same weekend, regardless of who'd come out on top.

I think I read online that Tyrese Gibson was gonna be GL...
He was diligently campaigning hard for the role, apparently went as far as getting WB's attention and got a meeting with them, but nobody wanted him as GL, I hope he got the memo.

I pray that visit to WB studios ended with "we'll call you".

Honestly I don't wanna see Green Lantern in the new movies, maybe even Flash either.

Ok really not sure how well GL can work, that's how much the previous movie damaged it for me. I'm happy with animated flicks voiced by Nathan Fillion.

PBS announced on Wednesday that it will postpone the third season of "Finding Your Roots" following an internal review that concluded actor Ben Affleck improperly influenced the show to omit the fact that his ancestors owned slaves.

The review by PBS and its New York station WNET was released on Wednesday and found that the series' co-producers "violated PBS standards by failing to shield the creative and editorial process from improper influence, and by failing to inform PBS or WNET of Mr. Affleck's efforts to affect program content."

The probe stemmed from reports in April that Affleck had asked the show to edit out the fact that his family history involved the ownership of slaves.
The episode that included the omissions was aired in October 2014 and is known at PBS as number 204.

"PBS will also withdraw episode #204 from all forms of distribution including on-air, digital platforms and home video," PBS said.
A fourth season of "Finding Your Roots" is up in the air until the station is "satisfied that the editorial standards of the series have been successfully raised" to a level of confidence, the broadcaster said.

Those steps include employing an "independent genealogist to review all versions of program episodes for factual accuracy."
The media learned of Affleck's influence of the episode from hacked e-mails between the show's host Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton.

Affleck admitted on Facebook to the making his request soon after the controversy spilled into the public.
"I didn't want any television show about my family to include a guy who owned slaves. I was embarrassed. The very thought left a bad taste in my mouth," Affleck wrote in apology on Facebook in April. "I regret my initial thoughts that the issue of slavery not be included in the story."

With the climate in the country these days, I don't blame him for trying. He has nothing to be ashamed about. He wasn't even alive then.
