There isn't a person on earth who isn't descended from people who did bad things, distantly and more closely. Not sure why that worried him.

I have to wonder why people even care who they're descended from. It doesn't mean a goddamned thing. Their ancestors' sins and virtues are not theirs.

Affleck made it worse by asking for the removal than if he just let it remain in the story, because no one would've cared when they learned about it, would've just been a blip on the radar.

Unless his goal was to create controversy, Hollywood and all.

Yeah, I thought the same.

Sadly it does matter to some people, it's like a weird cultural thing. For example: If you have british ancestors you are american if you have italian ancestors you are italian :dunno it's weird when you think about it. This sort of thing creates division and it's there in people's vocabulary.

As always, it's easy to say that when it's happening to someone else. If I knew my ancestors had slaves I'm not sure how I would react but I understand why he wouldn't want people to know. He lives in a world where people are judged by things like the brand of their clothes.

I certainly would not want to be set up as a reparations/white privilege punching bag if I were a celebrity with slaveowners in my family tree.

I can also understand celebrating heritage, but some people take it way too seriously. Greatness is not biological, nor is sin (and money trails don't change that).

:goodpost: I absolutely agree. Even the silly stereotype jokes we always hear on tv perpetuate division, division that shouldn't even be there in the first palce but I guess it's part of human nature.

There's another current TV show that investigates celebrities' ancestry called "Who Do You Think You Are?" and that show has had plenty of celebrities that have descended from slave owners. They were broadcast and are out there for the world to see.

Does anyone know or care? Nope. No one has even mentioned the other show or other celebrities with similar ancestry with the whole Affleck controversy.

So yeah, the show could have aired intact with them showing Affleck's ancestors being slave owners and no one would probably know or care either.

I don't blame Affleck for requesting them taking that part out, and the show was nice enough to do it. No harm, no foul. And that would have been the end of that, if the emails hadn't been hacked and leaked. I actually think the media has made it out to be a lot more than it really is, painting Affleck as a prima donna making demands, and now with the show's future at risk.

Oh, and I would love to see an Affleck-directed Batman!

I feel this separation is very big in America which is very sad and ironic since its very diverse ethnically. I noticed this on my holiday there. Latins only hung with Latins, white with white etc etc. Where every else like London for example everyone is together.

On Affleck, tbh it's his personal business he totally has the right to keep it to himself. He himself is a very progressive liberal, he's a good guy. Totally not bigoted so it makes no impact on his character. There Is no controversy there

as someone with a mixed background, I can say that what I have seen is that some people asking for progress and tolerance are sometimes the most intolerant. some of the ones asking for racism to end sometimes can be the most judgmental. that separation you talk about, it comes from all sides, not just the ones "in power"
