Actually the drop is looking like 68%, not 81%, which isn't unheard of.

Forbes Welcome

MOS dropped off 67% in fact.

Once again the general media is trying it's best to bury this film....amazing.
I still think it has a good chance to hit $1 billion so we will see...

11 years ago Batman Begins made $374 million worldwide. Crazy how much expectations have changed.

It's really just a parlor game on the Internet; started by bloggers who are always looking got some kind of narrative. The people who matter look at things a lot different than most online nerds believe they do. :lol

I've been thinking about the ASM2 take recently, as well. It made over $700 million worldwide, but was still considered a disappointment and led to the shelving of that series of films (the narrative there was that the overseas take led to significantly less profit for the film studio, which would presumably also apply to BVS). I'm guessing we'll find out what expectations really were for this film in the coming couple of months. If they shelve, say, Aquaman, or start scaling back the budget for JL, then we may be seeing another strategy taking shape for these films. If they keep going full steam ahead, then it would suggest that this take really is considered a success.

Adjusting for inflation, that's over $450 million in today's dollars. But sure, expectation have changed for funny book movies, in the post-Avengers world.

The reason $1 Billion is the mark is because these budgets have become ridiculous... If you look at the box office numbers and the rumors, there's actually a possibility that BvS hasn't even made a profit yet. Budget was rumored to have exceeded $250 million, and the marketing budget was said to possibly even exceed that. So your looking at a cost of near $600 million to make this movie. Making a billion wouldn't even be able to finance the JL movie, in which it's budget was rumored to be even higher!!! WB put waay too much faith/trust in Snyder and he let many many fans and critics (who many are fans as well) down. It might not even be his fault, but Studio will always pass the blame to the director. Remember, like others have said, AMSPM2 made $708 million, and was considered a failure. This will do better, but also cost more. And WB has much bigger future plans than Sony did. They (WB) gotta be a little scared. If Suicide Squad tanks too, they will undoubtedly go into a panic... And to me that movie looks even worse than this...:(

Don't just look at them as a 1:1 comparison. What ultimately sunk ASM2 was not the $700 million box office (which on its own was decent enough)... It was that the promotional partnerships and merchandising were huge busts. Like it or not, that matters as much as anything with these tent pole films. BvS has been a great success in that department to this point. In fact; almost all of the promotional partners have signed back on for Wonder Woman, which means the marketing costs for that will be offset again.

That is quantifiably untrue.

SS will be a big hit..how big is the question......I don't think WB feels it needs to do BvS numbers but it would be nice...

The budget was about $246 million. Total worldwide marketing & distribution costs was around $157 million. The film received nearly $200 million guaranteed from promotional partnerships.

You're right about the $600 million number in one way, though. Every penny over that will be profit. It's there now.

Even removing the promotional offsets from the equation, total costs were more like $400, not $600 million.

I'm only going by what I read from so called "experts". Everything I read said the budget ballooned way past the reported $250 million.... It will without a doubt make money, but investors want to double their money. Merchandising is different.. Those totals never go towards or taken into account with box office draw. Investors don't see any of the merchandising profits. Two different things. You don't need a movie for the market to have tons of Batman and Superman merchandise on the shelves. Two of the most iconic Superhero characters in history don't need a movie to be popular. And I haven't seen any of the movie merch flying off the shelves in any of the stores I've been too either.

I know everyone's talking about the numbers and all, but here's some Doomsday concept art: New BATMAN V SUPERMAN Concept Art Reveals Alternate Design For Doomsday

None of them look like DD, but I'd have preffered one of the "scarier" looks. It wouldn't have been Doomsday, but at least the corpse-like designs would have been unique. Anything would've been better than the Abominable Cave-Troll...

SS will have the same problem as GOTG, lots of people have never heard of it. They'll will have to make a movie for not only comic book fans, but casual movie goers as well. Not easy to do with bootleg versions on the web the day after the movies are released. Why spend a bunch of money at the theater to see characters you've never heard of when you can take a peak online first for free.

In the case of these films, they do. The "investors" are Time Warner and its stakeholders. It's all taken into account as part of a portfolio.

Trust me, I've seen Spreadsheets that would make even the most battle-hardened CPA's eyes bleed. :lol
