WB needed this to be a $1.5 billion dollar movie like Marvel's Avengers movies.
Wanted and needed - two different things.

In the case of these films, they do. The "investors" are Time Warner and its stakeholders. It's all taken into account as part of a portfolio.
Trust me, I've seen Spreadsheets that would make even the most battle-hardened CPA's eyes bleed.
I'm sure... The money thrown at movies today is crazy... You also have to remember too that many big actors take back end sums in addition to their salaries based on how well the movie does. Which then again eats into profits. And those deals are never divulged and are not considered part of the budget either.
Of course they would love that (or more!) but yeah, definitely didn't NEED it. That's a false internet narrative spun from the same usual blogger goobers.
Once again the general media is trying it's best to bury this film....amazing.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't know why anyone would care about what Kevin Smith thinks and says... about anything.
I know everyone's talking about the numbers and all, but here's some Doomsday concept art: New BATMAN V SUPERMAN Concept Art Reveals Alternate Design For Doomsday
None of them look like DD, but I'd have preffered one of the "scarier" looks. It wouldn't have been Doomsday, but at least the corpse-like designs would have been unique. Anything would've been better than the Abominable Cave-Troll...

11 years ago Batman Begins made $374 million worldwide. Crazy how much expectations have changed.
