Real or BS?:

As Civil War hits theaters and flies its way to the kind of box office Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice should have earned without much trouble, things continue to reshuffle at Warner Bros. This one is big. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Affleck has become executive producer on the already-filming Justice League movie.
Affleck and writer Chris Terrio are going to shape up the script to make sure it’s something people might actually want to see. Once filming is complete, Affleck will have some say in post-production concerns. This means Affleck is now creatively involved in the film on a very real level.

Hold up, the red phone is ringing. Oh hey, it’s Devin Faraci, who has this to add:

My sources have told me that Affleck was incredibly unhappy about the reception of BvS. He felt humiliated after spending so much of the press tour saying how much better this film would be than Daredevil. On top of that his agent was furious when Kevin Tsujihara jumped the gun and announced him as the director of The Batman - there were still negotiations happening.

This move seems to help placate Affleck while also edging Zack Snyder out of a controlling central position in the DC Movieverse.

This is just the latest step in an ongoing shakeup at Warner Bros in response to Batman v Superman’s poor reception (which Devin wrote more about here). While it’s certainly fascinating to see played out in public like this, the bottom line is a hope that these movies will actually get good. With the help of Affleck, an honestly talented filmmaker, that comes closer to being a reality.

That behind the scenes drama is more compelling than anything in BVS :lol WB should make a film about the making of the DCEU with Shia Labeouf as Snyder....I'd watch that.

Paging IrishJedi, IrishJedi you have Faraci story to put down.

I guess you can compare the Snyderverse to the Burtonverse in that it got too dark for the mainstream and they had to dial it back a little. I just hope we don't get another Batman Forever (though with Affleck involved that's unlikely).

That said, I don't mind dark and I liked BvS a lot.

The difference is that Burton's Batman was gothic/comic book-y dark, whereas BvS is simply "2edgy4u" dark.

Batman Returns was pretty nightmarish in places. But yeah, I guess BvS has more of a gritty realism that obviously didn't sit well with many.

"Darkness", in healthy doses, is good. It helps differentiate it from Marvel's more optimistic tone. But when you hammer it down with Jesus imagery, Luthor talking about God, Angels and Demons in every sentence and opening with lines such as "it's a beautiful lie", then you cross over to "2deep4u" territory.

I cant think of any character in Burton's batman movies as annoying as Lex,
Nor can I think of any motivations or scenes as nonsensical as BvS, im just saying, I dont think the darkness was the only problem. (A dark but well written, well motivated BvS could have worked.)

I actually liked the religious allegories and I *loved* the montage with Kal-El as a messianic figure. But I realise I'm in the minority.

Maybe the closest was when the Penguin kidnapped "every" child of Gotham's elite.

CW fell just a bit short of overtaking its Thursday opening (https://www.comicbookmovie.com/captain_america/captain_america_civil_war/box-office-captain-america-civil-war-a141374). Cause, ya know, BvS was released during Easter and CW on a school night. Either way, Cap will have outgrossed it by May 15 or so, so I don't know what the laughter is for...

Advance Pre-Orders for BvS were through the roof, mainly because WB held off reviews until, like, 2 days before release to capitalize on the hype. Plus, it opened during Easter. Cap's numbers are for the most part, earned. They're not just hype. Marvel allowed reviews to be published a month in advance and it opened during a school day. If anything, the fact that it just fell short of 2 million is impressive. And no, they won't end around even. CW is on track for about 1.2 billion according to analysts. Good word of mouth helps a lot.

As for the opening weekend, dunno. Some analysts say that it might hit 200 million this weeked. It's still possible. From my experience, CW sold out 3 consecutive showings while BvS struggled to fill just one.
