Run your regular DVD at 480i that most people will watch them in and then your Blu or HD in 1080i/p and tell me you can't see the difference. :)

Uconverted DVD's still lack the depth of color you get with HD-DVD. This may not be as drastic with the CGI films since they are pretty colorful already. They also seem to look a little noisy compared to their HD counterparts.

I just read some more exciting news!!

There will be Blu-Ray PS3 to PSP Transfers coming soon!!! :rock

Read about it here: https://pspupdates.qj.net/How-it-will-work-Blu-ray-PS3-to-PSP-transfers/pg/49/aid/111327

This could be interesting. This may cause some issues. This must get around the DRM. I am not sure that all the parties will sign off on this. DRM is a huge deal for studios and if they are letting people around this for this it may make it easier to exploit and be used to get around DRM in other manners.

there is no question about it, i DO notice a huge difference between DVD and HD quality. a lot of it depends on the transfer though. sometimes i wonder if the studios are really taking advantage of the higher resolution and disc space, rather than simply importing the same transfer from DVD onto HD.

one thing that bothers me is when you see those high def videos in bestbuy that have a split screen comparing DVD to HD quality. the DVD quality looks terrible! it's like they are comparing a crappy VHS quality video to HD to highlight the improvement.

i'm all about high def, but not a fan of false advertising.

I feel the same way. It's like they are trying to compensate for the fact that this new technology isn't quite as large of a leap forward as we had all hoped for. There is a visual difference but it definitely isn't as striking as we are led to believe from the hype. That is another reason besides the format war that HD hasn't really taken off.

I understand were your coming from! Our Bluray display has that comparing split screen. Which shows you a DVD movie with the crappiest conection and worst tv possible so you are looking at a Dvd connected with composite cables on a tube tv. Which is still not false advertising but misleading cause we all know DVDs with at least component cables dont look that crapy. But they get away with it.

Just read that Universal is opting out of it's exclusive HD deal. They will still support HD (at least until May 31), but will also start releasing in BR.

At least HD DVD's should be really cheap later this year :monkey1

I will say some older movies converted to HD are not THAT much more impressvie than their regular DVD counterparts, but just about anything made in the last few years is leaps and bounds over regular DVD.

Some older movies dont have a huge level of improvement... but others really do. Compare the 2001: A Space Odyssey dvd (the one from a few years ago) to the blu-ray version and tell me there's no difference. same goes for blade runner. but i'm sure something like, Nosferatu, wont have too much of a benefit in HD.

but it really all depends on available print and the amount of effort put into the remaster.

i agree completely. 2001 and blade runner are off the hook amazing in HD.

They do tend to exaggerate it, but not as much as you might think. There is a thread over on the AVS forum that shows comparisons of existing DVDs (captured directly on a PC, so no crappy connection involved) with their HD DVD and Blu-ray counterparts. And the difference is, in a word, stunning.

Either way to me Its Stunning indeed!!! especially CG movies they look so orgasmic!

Wow! lot of discussion going on here about the difference between an upconverted dvd and blu-ray. I have seen both the upconverted dvd and blu-ray of Casino Royale (own them both), and I have to say the difference is HUGE in most scenes. And that's saying alot, especially since Casino Royale isn't even one the best transfers out there.

And I have to agree that 2001 looks stunning considering it's age, not to mention The Shining which looks incredible too.
