Think about it, nobody really cares about a movie until marketing tells them to care anyway. Audiences don't know what they want. Cameron and his people know how to generate hype and create a great marketing/promotional campaign out of thin air. You're fooling yourself if you think people will just sit idly by and ignore the Avatar 2 blitz once the hype train ramps up. Hell, you may even be reeled in by a quick shot of a hot, gun toting blue cat monkey thing yourself.

Who cares, leave him alone. If his Avatar sequels come out, I hope they crush nu-Star Wars numbers, again. He's the only man with a plan that can save cinema and make yet another sequel for the ages!

Maybe he's just waiting to get the Terminator rights back in 2019 so he can put the Terminator universe in the Pandora universe.

Avatar still holds the box-office records, and Fast and the Furious 8 already beat TFA's global opening.

In fact, Star Wars TFA trailer used to have the record for most views in 24 hours, but now several film trailers have surpassed TFA . Thor 3 is now Disney's most view trailer in 24 hours. The Last Jedi wasn't even close to Thor 3 or TFA....which means people might be getting tired of SW, or they don't care as much about the new cast since that's what the future of SW is all about.

Still, I'm sure Avatar 2 will break all kinds of records and maybe it'll be a great sequel like Aliens or T2. It's comical for people to doubt James Cameron at this point. He's like the Godzilla of filmmaking, he comes out of the ocean and makes a movie every 7 or 10 years and it completely dominates the competition, then he leaves and goes back to living under the sea in his Deepsea Challenger submarine.

I still think the sequels will need more compelling characters and villains.

:lol :lol :lol

I love that comparison.

My heart says that no one really cares about Avatar and that at most the sequels will make about a billion worldwide each like the Hobbit movies. But my head knows that you just never know with Cameron and I wouldn't be shocked if Avatar 2 became the first $3 billion grosser. I believe there were predictions a while back that Avatar 2 will gross over a billion in China *alone.* They did name an entire mountain after the first one.

This post made my inner Godzilla fan very happy.

That's interesting that TLJ's trailer viewings are tracking behind Thor 3 and other films. Hopefully that tells Disney that the world doesn't want one of these every year and they can chill out and release them every three years, at the most. Or just end the Saga completely after Episode IX and focus on merchandise and theme park attractions from then on out. Wishful thinking I know.

I didn't know that. :lol

It'll be interesting to see how Avatar 2 does in China because the first one made about $200 million, but the Chinese market has grown since the first film, with Fast/Furious 7 making $390 million 2 years ago. The latest Fast 8 is already at $900 million with over $300 mill coming from China :horror However, US studios only take 25% of the Chinese box-office, but still, it's a big market.

The world loves the Diesel. :dunno

There is NO way Avatar 2 will exceed TFA at the box office(unless ticket prices jump like 30% or more by the time the thing is finally released) SW hype for TFA was so gigantic and widespread- it's SW. Avatar is clearly nowhere even close to SW in popularity.
Cameron is hyping this to the stars and that is saying something- no matter how brilliant he is FLOPS do come along now and then and he is due- his accomplishments for the last two films are so astounding another repeat seems almost impossible.
However if he has a big ace up his sleeve- like some kind of new hyper realistic 3D technology that will render cinema obsolete then yes I'd say it has a chance to upset all records...

I'm saving all these posts from people saying Jim can't or won't win, just like I saved all the posts about Trump not winning. Imma make a nice collage with this in the middle,

Dammit now why'd you have to go and say that. Now it's *guaranteed* to double TFA's numbers. Never, ever, bet against Cameron.

:rotfl i still say that- however note i hedge the bet by admitting Jim may have an Ace on the Hole that will prove me wrong

But TFA didn't even make as much as the first Avatar, so I don't agree with that view. By 2020 there will be more people, more screens, more promotion in China and after the original Avatar is re released in cinemas prior to the release, there will be a whole new generation of people who never saw the original in cinemas in 2009.

Star Wars might be one of the world's biggest franchises, but there are still a lot of people who have no interest in it. It has a bit of a reputation for being just for geeks. Avatar doesn't really have that geek reputation. I know more people that are interested in Avatar rather than Star Wars.

I pretty much like most things so I will be there to watch Avatar 2 when it is finally released.....you know, if I'm still alive by then!
