Avatar did super well, not because it was a particularly good movie, but because it was one of the first movies to fully realize the use of the 3d technology. That tech is now pretty much old hat. So Avatar 2 better come through with a good story, because I don't think the 3d gimmick is going to push this one along like the first one. But only time will tell. If he even gets the movie done.

I've heard this kind of talk before with T2, Titanic, and Avatar. ;)

Well, two out of the three could be considered good movies. One of which could be considered excellent. Neither in my opinion is Avatar. :)

You weren't one of those people that got depressed and wanted to kill themselves when they realized that Pandora wasn't real were you?

I don't care how long it takes. It will be worth it. That so many are doubting Cameron after his track record of constantly proving people wrong is a bit ridiculous.

Agreed he always pulls it off in the end BUT there will be a mistep in his stellar career and making three more Avatars is plain testing the world's need for that much more...

I don't remembering hearing any bad talk about T2 back in the day prior to its release. Definitely for Titanic and Avatar though. Also for Abyss, which I think got kind of lost in the big summer of '89 even though its a good movie mostly.

T2 was the most expensive film of all time at the time, costing over $100 million and taking big risks with ILM's visual effects for the T-1000. There were doubts and concerns over whether it would make any money at all, given how the first film, while popular and a breakout hit, was not the kind of hit that would warrant a sequel costing over 15 times what the original cost. To say it was risky was an understatement.

Avatar was a rip off of Pocahontas

Pocahontas, the first film to utilize a "fish out of water" storyline.

I think that's really over-dramatizing the history. Cameron spent more than he was supposed to, he always does. But the Terminator "brand" -- even without that term back then -- was well-known and hugely hyped over the 7 years between films. There's always risk in Hollywood -- especially with big movies -- and there's always talk about whether Burton's Batman will do well or will Lucas' 2nd Star Wars be able to recapture that magic. Been going on for years. T2 was not derided in the way Titanic and Avatar were a year or two prior to release... and thus shouldn't be on your list of comparables. That's all I'm sayin'

I know you want to use it because its the only proven sequel-of-his-own-work Cameron's done. (I specify that so you won't resort to Aliens)

The real question is: can Cameron pull of another sequel to his own film? The fact that Titanic worked and Avatar worked has nothing to do with whether the sequel will work.

If the only similarity you see between Pocahontas and Avatar is a "fish out of water" story, you need to pay much more attention to the film. Personally, I feel it is even more a copy of Dances With Wolves.

Ferngully? :dunno

I think anyone over the age of 12 who saw Avatar agreed it looks great but the slight story is about as common as they come.

But its not the story with Cameron, its the storytelling. He's a very good storyteller; knows what engages people.

It will be a real test of his abilities to pull off Avatar 2.

Likely all he'll obsess about for the next two years is bringing Pandora to life at Disney World... then a few years later, Disneyland.

Maybe Avatar II will come out for Avatar's 10th anniversary. :lol

Pandora disney world is ready to open soon

he can keep pushing up the release date for Avatar2, 3, 4 and 5 indefinitely for all I care. I just have no interest really in seeing him milk this for another 10 yrs. As a groundbreaking movie in terms of special effects and how the movie was made, yes good and I give Avatar props. But story wise it just didn't grab me as anything else I have not seen before. yes I get the jist/message of it, but to lose one's **** over it as like the greatest movie ever.....

We're at the point where movies can no longer wow us with visuals alone. Resurrecting dead actors was the final frontier and now we're there. These new Avatar movies are going to have to win audiences over on an emotional level.

Cameron will tinker for a long time... he's weening a new generation after all to want to visit Pandora.

Once the ride is open thats it.
They cant really change it. Even to fix rides when they break is a huge hassle because tourists get mad
