Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I'm definitely not expecting a historically accurate period piece here, but a bit of action escapism set in a fantastical comic book version of WWII. I don't want to see strictly accurate subs and airplanes, I want to see imaginative designs from people who thought, "Wouldn't it be cool if it looked like this..."

What surprises me is the fact that this movie seems to have a little bit of heart, characters we will enjoy watching, and the time to tell an actual story without taking itself too seriously. In that regards, it reminds me of the first Iron Man. I think this is going to be a great, fun trip to the movies.

Thank you for that bit of positivity. It's a good reminder that this is just a movie and its meant to be fun. The world is not going to end, Captain America's comic roots aren't going to change, and real life history will not be altered by the movie not strictly adhering to real life and the comic book WWII.

That said, I really was hoping for a more period accurate movie, so I am a bit disappointed. If you're right and I enjoy the movie and have fun watching it, it will be a success for me.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

Marvel Studios missed an opportunity to make a serious period piece set in WWII where the Superhero aspect took a backseat to the actual story and the actual events in time. I believe that TDK was able to transcend a standard Superhero film and tell a crime drama that at its roots could be separated. Captain America could have one upped that with no real problems. They didn't go that route.

That being said, I am very optimistic in what I'm seeing and will be there on opening day.

Yeah, but this is set in the same reality as Hulk, and Thor.
Just imagine the same Dark Knight appearing in a JLA movie a year after The Dark Knight Rises. I think he would look out of place, plus it would do a disservice to the three Nolan movies.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I disagree completely. Part of Captain America's mystique is the whole Fish out of Water element. Having that kind of hero suddenly appear with the Avengers would be fantastic. It'd cement that completely and allow for a slower transition, a more natural transition showing that the world has changed and Cap is trying to evolve with it.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

Howard Stark looked latino :lol

I always though Tony looked pretty Hispanic in the comics: Tanner complexion, black hair, goatee. It's especially more apparent next to his more white-bread teammates like Thor and Cap. Even the Jewish RDJ doesn't exactly look like the typical WASP. So with that in mind, Howard Stark's appearance works for me.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree, I just can't see it working, especially given the time restraint of an Avengers movie and the amount of time each character's development will be given to it.

I like the old sig more, but I think you were right to fix it :lol

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

Damn, I hate that I missed the pre-photoshopped sig. :lol

More on topic, I agree with Mike that a more accurate WWII (I wanted Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers w/ Cap in it) would have been better. I think he would have fit in Avengers just fine. As for time constraints...they should have copied Harry Potter and made Avengers a two part movie.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I can't stop watching the full trailer. No matter how good or bad the movie is I've dreamed of seeing badass live-action Captain America footage sometime in my lifetime and that time has arrived. Absolutely my most anticipated film of the year. :yess:

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

At one time this was my most anticipated, but with the direction the movie seems to be going in, POTC has me a bit more excited. If you want to berate me for that, get in line behind my Potterhead friends who are offended I'm looking forward to POTC more than HP7.2. :lol

Berate you? There's no right or wrong when it comes to summer popcorn movies. Its all silly fare when you get down to it. :)

Some of you guys are disappointed they didn't make "Saving Private Ryan the Superhero Movie." I'm coming from a different place. I've been a Cap fan since the 70's and I think "Benjamin Button the Action Movie" could be the perfect way to showcase Captain America. We'll see.
