Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I can't stop watching the full trailer. No matter how good or bad the movie is I've dreamed of seeing badass live-action Captain America footage sometime in my lifetime and that time has arrived. Absolutely my most anticipated film of the year. :yess:

Haha YEs!! No matter how bad this movie might turn out, it can't be any worse than the crappy one that came out in the early 90s. I downloaded and watched it last weekend just for memory's sake, but damn that movie sucked big.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

As another long-time Cap fan (not as long as you, Khev, but Cap was the first comic I ever bought) I'm also glad they didn't make it "realistic."
Cap is my favorite traditional super hero and so far I'm very happy with what I'm seeing. This thread is a hilarious chicken little fest.

....and Agent0028.....you stink. And you dress funny. Consider yourself berated. :lol :peace And as a Potter-head myself I'd be more psyched for Potter if there was a real trailer. WTF WB? :impatient:

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

See, I think they've done so far what has been done right with the Iron Man series and Batman. Blending the real with the comics aspect of it all.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

Except that in the blending of Batman and Iron Man nothing changed in our world. Same with Hulk. They just dropped in those characters to the world we know exists.

They didn't replace all the cars in Iron Man with futuristic looking Minority Report self driven vehicles.

They didn't dress everyone in Gotham like a ____ Tracy character with bright yellow and orange zoot suits and exaggerated facial features.

They didn't give the guys fighting Hulk laser rifles and jet packs.

They did change virtually everything about Captain America's world instead of just dropping this character that can move and kick ass into Saving Private Ryan, they replaced real planes with X-Men Jets. Jets were not very common in WW2. They gave us fake looking non real motorcycles, wierd robotic looking villains with non existant star wars looking guns. Little personal covert submarines. They made him have "international" appeal, in other words they sold him out.

In reality, "blending" is exactly what they didn't do.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

They introduced a lot of comic elements into history. Like...um...comic books do.

Yep. Captain America has existed in a weird alternate WWII history since the 40's. I'm glad they aren't making Unbreakable Part 2.

On a side not, how hilarious would it be instead of The First Avenger the full title was "Captain America: Commie Smasher." :lol

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

So back in 50's they strapped characters to rockets as the first shot points out, is that really what your defense of this movie is going to be? :lol

They also said ducking under you desk would keep you safe from an atomic blast. We've come a long way. We don't accept the same things.

Batman, Iron Man, Hulk, successful and accepted.

Wolverine went full comic, went home empty handed. Never go full comic.

What's more ridiculous? A character running around in bright spandex or a sci-fi submarine? Its always a tricky balance to portray a live-action version of a superhero story. Fantasy elements can often be tweaked without abandoned completely. Superman and Spider-Man are good examples, and hopefully Captain America will be too.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

But again Spiderman and Supes were both the comic characters along with only there enemies. They are the only ones with access to this comic book technology and powers.

They were just like Batman, dropped into existing real world environments we are familiar with. With alot of regular people and locations we know, vehicles we know, its the familarity with these cities etc, and the crime and things we know happen there, that make the idea of this superhero work. We want someone to clean up the cities where we live and keep us safe.

The same principle applies, the Nazis weren't just an American enemey, plenty of people just wanted to see Cap storm a beach and kick some ass. Instead he is fighting people in suits? Or are they robots? Is it in 1944, if so why are there all these laser guns and stuff? Was that Tony Stark, is he being played by a new actor? I guess it isn't in the past then? Alot of regular people won't know these things man. It's confusing and strange and IMO won't work.

When the Iron man and Batman trailers came out people were talking. Yo man, new Batmans coming out and looks cool. I have not heard a single friend or anyone I know outside of the comic fan community mention Captain America.

This guy Deckard is the KING of negativity. EVERY POST HE HAS. Sheesh what a sad existence you must lead bro to make you such an antagonistic person.

Oh, now I see your criteria for what works and what doesn't. We just disagree then. I think (as much as I LOVE the movie) that Spider-Man is actually more absurd that a guy gets bit by a spider and turned into a superhero THE VERY SAME WEEK another guy has an independently created accident and also turns into the world's first supervillain. Pretty ridiculous.

To me its much easier to accept that a world with the technology to turn a weakling into a superman (which you literally have to do in order to allow for the character to exist at all) is also a world capable of creating power suits and fancy subs. It literally has always been a part of the character's (and most Marvel characters) existance. No need to ditch that wholesale just for the movie, IMO.

I run my own buissness atm I am my own boss, make my own hours, I enjoy a joint every now and again. I make good money to afford this hobby and love my family. In my free time I fly helicopters and volunteer to the CAP. I have a good deal of real friends I can count on and know it. I've managed to overcome the death of someone very close to me, cancer and other obstacles that show you whats really important. I enjoy everyday I have here because I know what it's cost me and don't expect some afterlife. This ride is it for me.

Having said that, the world would be a terribly boring place if everyone just agreed and hugged each other and rainbows came out of there ass's.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I can see the argument about the guys in suits shooting flames, or personal subs, but thats what makes comics cool. I don't want to see a Saving Private Ryan knock off where the only comic elements of comics are a guy in blue spandex, and a nazi with a skull for a face.

Comics live in a fantasy world. it's that reality that attracts us to it. it's what makes hollywood want to make movies about comics. I don't see much point in taking a character out of his world and putting him in one that he's no a part of, just to make it more realistic.

thats like saying all comics should be drawn photo-realistically, and bashing those who have a more stylized art as childish. at least that's how I see it but everyone is entitled to thier own point of view.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I imagine the more fanciful sci-fi/comic book elements were included because having a guy in an American flag suit running around in Saving Private Ryan would be ____ing retarded.

I was with you up until the rainbows out the ass part. I think that would make the world less boring.

I'm never going to look at a rainbow the same way again...
